Popular Android Screen Recorder iRecorder App Revealed as Trojan

The iRecorder app has been removed from the Google Play Store, but it is still available on third-party app stores, so be careful!

iRecorder – Screen Recorder, a once legitimate Android application, has now been found to harbour a dangerous Android remote access Trojan (RAT). Cybersecurity experts from ESET made this discovery, uncovering a variant of AhMyth, an open-source remote administration tool capable of extracting sensitive data from Android devices.

Initially launched in September 2021 and boasting over 50,000 installs, iRecorder – Screen Recorder appeared to be a harmless screen-recording app. However, the latest analysis by ESET has revealed the presence of a malicious code, referred to as AhRat by the researchers, within the app’s recent update to version 1.3.8 in August 2022.

The malicious iRecorder app (Credit: ESET)

The AhRat Trojan enables unauthorized access to Android devices, allowing the perpetrator to exfiltrate files with specific extensions and capture microphone recordings. These compromised data are then uploaded to a command and control (C2) server under the attacker’s control. ESET’s report suggests that such targeted actions could indicate the app’s involvement in an espionage campaign, though it is yet to be attributed to a specific group.

AhMyth, the base RAT on which AhRat is built, has previously been associated with Transparent Tribe, a cyber espionage group known as APT36. Transparent Tribe has a reputation for utilizing social engineering techniques and focusing on government and military organizations in South Asia. However, the researchers caution against directly linking the current samples to any known advanced persistent threat (APT) group.

Once informed by ESET, the Google Play security team promptly removed the iRecorder – Screen Recorder app from its official store. It is worth noting, however, that the application may still be available on unofficial Android markets. The developer behind iRecorder has other applications listed on Google Play, but there is no evidence of malicious code in those applications.

Fortunately, ESET researchers have not detected instances of AhRat beyond the scope of the iRecorder – Screen Recorder app at present. Nevertheless, Android users are advised to remain vigilant and exercise caution while downloading apps from alternative sources, emphasizing the importance of relying on official app stores for enhanced security.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, this incident serves as a stark reminder that what may seem useful today can quickly turn into a potential threat tomorrow. Users must prioritize their digital safety by staying informed and adopting proactive measures to safeguard their devices and personal information from such malicious attacks.

Comcast NOW TV is a $20/month streaming service with FAST Channels & Peacock Premium

0
[ad_1]

Today, Comcast announced its latest streaming TV product, NOW TV. This is a sort of hybrid streaming live TV product. As it’s using streaming and FAST channels, as well as tossing in Peacock Premium for just $20 per month.

This service will have channels from NBC, Sky and Xumo, all of which Comcast owns. Which allows Comcast to offer this rather unique product, and also at a pretty low price.

For streaming TV channels, customers will get more than 40 channels from: A&E, Afro, AMC, Animal Planet, BBC America, BBC News, Comedy.TV, Cooking, Crime + Investigation, Discovery, Discovery Life, Food Network, FYI, Great American Family, Great American Living, Get TV, Game Show Network, Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Drama, Hallmark Movies & Mysteries, HGTV, The HISTORY Channel, Investigation Discovery, IFC, Justice Central, Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Network, Magnolia Network, Military History, MotorTrend Network, OWN, Pursuit, Recipe.TV, Science Channel, Sony Movies, Sundance TV, TLC, Travel Channel, Vice, WEtv and Weather Channel.

When it comes to FAST channels, customers will get 20 free ad-supported streaming TV channels including: NBC News NOW, Sky News and the following genre-based channels from Xumo Play: Action Movies, Black Cinema, Bollywood & Indian Cinema, Comedy Movies, Comedy TV, Crime TV, Documentaries, Drama & Action TV, Family Movies, Food TV, Movies, Game Shows, Her Movies, Horror & Thriller, Kids TV, Reality TV, Sci-Fi & Fantasy Movies, Travel & Lifestyle TV and Westerns.

On top of that, you also get Peacock Premium, which is normally $5 per month.

Is Comcast’s NOW TV worth it?

This service was just announced, and so far, from what we know about it, it does seem to be a pretty good value. Now will it replace something like YouTube TV, Fubo or Hulu + Live TV? No. That’s because NOW TV really only has channels that Comcast owns, which is a big number of popular cable channels, but nowhere near the top 100 cable channels.

The bright side here is that for $20 per month, you’re getting 60 channels, plus Peacock Premium, and there’s no equipment required. Comcast says that at launch, NOW TV will work through the Xfinity Stream app on supported devices. That includes Xfinity Flex, Fire TV, iOS, Android, and casting via Apple AirPlay and Google Chromecast.

Max has officially launched in the US, sort of

0
[ad_1]

The newest rebranding of HBO has finally launched in the US. It’s called Max, and is the combined streaming service of Warner Bros and Discovery. It’s mostly just a rebrand of the current app, with more Discovery content being added in, but it’s a bit of a bumpy ride this morning.

If you login to Max today, you’ll be told that your profiles, watch history and My List have a new home, with a button to “Start Streaming”, but that button is kinda broken right now. For some, it will do absolutely nothing, and others will get a “something went wrong” error.

This is likely because Max is getting a lot of people signing in right now, and their servers just aren’t able to handle it. Hopefully it’ll be fixed rather soon.

FwztdTwWwAEfCOO

Max launches with a ton of new 4K content

Under AT&T’s ownership, HBO MAX didn’t really seem to care to much about 4K content. It was mostly only for the newer titles, like Wonder Woman 1984 and Batman. But with the launch of Max, WBD is launching a ton of new 4K content. The company claims, about eight-times as much 4K content as HBO MAX had. So that’s definitely a good thing, and could get more people to splurge for the more expensive 4K plan.

Max has three plans, ranging from $9.99 to $19.99 per month. There’s Ad-Lite which is $9.99 per month and gives you full access to the Max library, with a max of 4-5 minutes of ads per hour of content. Then there’s Ad-free which is $15.99 per month, and it’s completely ad-free with 30 downloads. Finally, there’s Ultimate Ad-free which does give you the entire library, plus 4K HDR content with Dolby Atmos, and you also get up to 100 downloads, and four concurrent streams.

It has the makings of being a pretty good service, but the first day is generally pretty rough for things like this. So this is to be expected.

Gboard may make it easier to resize the keyboard

0
[ad_1]

Google’s Gboard is full of a ton of useful features that make the typing experience that much better. The company is planning on revamping its keyboard, and that may bring another functionality. According to 9To5Google, Gboard May bring a shortcut to help you resize it.

This came from an APK deep dive from 9To5Google, so you want to take this information with a grain of salt. Code for this feature was hidden within the app’s APK, but it doesn’t mean that the feature is functional. Also, Google can take this feature away at any point, so there’s no guarantee that it will come.

Google might add a resize shortcut to Gboard

You’re currently able to resize your keyboard using Gboard. You will have to go to your settings and find the keyboard height setting. There, you can choose between six different height presets: extra-short, short, mid-short, normal, mid-tall, tall, and extra-tall. That’s a good feature to have, but this new shortcut will give you more customization options.

After the revamp, you will see a resize button next to the other shortcuts. When you press it, you’ll see the keyboard pop out and have a border around it. At the top and bottom of the keyboard, you’ll see little dots. You will use dots to adjust the height of the keyboard.

In the middle of the keyboard, you’ll see three buttons. The one on the left looks like an Undo button, and the one on the right looks like a confirm button. The one in the middle looks like it will allow you to move the actual keyboard up and down. This will let you pick the right spot for the keyboard to sit.

One thing to note is that this new shortcut might not allow you to adjust the width of the keyboard. It may only pertain to the height. Currently, when you resize the keyboard, the aspect ratio remains consistent, leading to an overall smaller or larger keyboard. However, if you only want to adjust the height, this new iteration might come useful.

Currently, we’re not sure when exactly this feature will come out. Make sure to stay tuned for more on this story.

iPhone 16 Pro Max stands next to iPhone 15 Pro Max to show its size

0
[ad_1]

It’s not exactly a secret that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be larger than its predecessor, well, at least according to rumors. Well, thanks to 9to5Mac, you can see the iPhone 16 Pro Max next to the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which reveals the size difference between them.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max stands next to iPhone 15 Pro Max as they show us their size

The source managed to get CAD renders of both devices at this point. We already knew that the iPhone 16 Pro Max will come with a 6.9-inch display, compared to a 6.7-inch panel on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Just to be clear, it won’t exactly be 6.9 inches, but it will be marketed as such. It will realistically sit somewhere between 6.8 and 6.9 inches. Having said that, if you check out the images below, you’ll be able to see the two devices side-by-side.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max will be taller and narrower than the iPhone 14 Pro Max

The iPhone 15 Pro Max will be large on its own, so you can only imagine the size of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The thing is, both devices will have thinner bezels than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, so the size may surprise you a bit.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max will be 159.8mm tall, and 76.7mm wide. The iPhone 16 Pro Max will measure 165mm when it comes to height, and 77.2mm in width. It will actually be a bit narrower than the iPhone 14 Pro Max (77.6mm), but also considerably taller, as the iPhone 14 Pro Max measures 160.7mm when it comes to height.

The iPhone 16 Pro will also utilize a larger display

As a side note, the iPhone 16 Pro will also have a larger display. It will get an increase from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches. Realistically, it will be between 6.2 and 6.3 inches, but Apple will market it as a 6.3-inch panel.

The company seems to be forced to do that in order to fit a periscope lens inside the phone. The iPhone 15 Pro Max will debut that periscope camera, while the iPhone 15 Pro won’t utilize it. The iPhone 16 Pro will, however.

Google is expanding its Flood Hub to over 60 new countries

0
[ad_1]

In this day and age, where extreme climate events, including floods and wildfires, have become a common phenomenon, timely alerts can be the difference between life and death. Therefore, to help solve this issue, Google introduced Flood Hub last year, a tool designed to provide advance warnings to individuals in vulnerable areas. Now, Google has taken another step towards helping people in times of crisis by announcing the expansion of Flood Hub to over 60 new countries.

Why is predicting floods important?

While cities in first-world countries may already have measures in place for predicting floods, a UN report states that nearly half of our planet lacks adequate early warning systems for disasters like floods. Therefore, with the rise of climate change and the increasing prevalence of threats like floods, it is now more important than ever to predict these events accurately. And this is where Google came into the picture. With its vast amount of data and resources, the company was able to predict floods up to a week in advance, thus offering significantly more time for people to prepare when compared to previous methods.

The functioning of Flood Hub revolves around the utilization of publicly available data sources, such as weather forecasts and satellite imagery. While Google previously used water level gauges to predict floods, the required data was often unavailable in underdeveloped countries.

Therefore, Google switched techniques and combined two essential models: the Hydrologic Model, which forecasts the volume of water flowing in rivers, and the Inundation Model, which predicts the areas that will be affected and estimates the water depth.

Google Incorporating Flood Hub in Search

In an effort to make it easier for people to access vital information, the company is also working on making Flood Hub information available on Search and Maps. However, it’s important to note that Google’s Flood Hub currently focuses on tracking riverine floods and does not include flash floods or coastal events.

The recent expansion of Flood Hub to over 60 additional countries across Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, and South and Central America represents a significant stride in leveraging AI to tackle climate-related challenges. In addition to floods, Google is also using its vast resources to track wildfires in countries like Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Netflix makes it easier to find movies & shows saved in My List

0
[ad_1]

Shortly after bumping up the resolution cap for the ad-supported plan, Netflix is further improving the user experience with new filters for the My List feature. These filters let you quickly find your saved movies and shows on the app. The update is already rolling out to Android users, with the iOS app following in the coming weeks.

My List on Netflix is a dedicated section for bookmarked shows and movies. You can add any title that you’re interested in watching or are already watching to your list for easier access later. However, if you have added too many titles, it may defeat the whole purpose of the feature as you’d need to spend more time looking through the list to find the one you are looking for.

Netflix is fixing this problem with filters. The My List section now has various chips at the top that let you quickly filter or sort the saved titles in one of many ways. You can filter titles by movies, TV shows, “Haven’t Started” watching, “Started” watching, and more. You can also sort titles in alphabetical order, by release date, or when they were added to the list. The larger your “My List” collection is, the more useful these filters are.

This isn’t the only notable change coming to Netflix’s My List feature, though. The streaming giant now also lets you remove titles from the list much quicker. You can swipe directly on the title cards to remove them (via). Earlier, you needed to tap on the title card to go to its details page and unselect the My List checkmark icon to remove it from the list. This change further improves the user experience.

Netflix My List filters

Netflix is adding a “Coming Soon” row to its TV app

The aforementioned changes to My List are currently only planned for Netflix’s mobile apps. Meanwhile, the TV version of the streaming platform is adding a “Coming Soon” row to the homescreen. As you’d expect, this row will let you see which films and shows are arriving on Netflix in the coming months. You can sign up to get a reminder when a movie or show is available. Note that the “New & Popular” tab already lets you discover upcoming titles on Netflix.

The “Coming Soon” row on the homescreen of Netflix’s TV app will be available to users globally over the next few weeks. Meanwhile, the updated My List section is now rolling out to Android users. You can click the button below to download the latest version of the Netflix app from the Google Play Store.

iPhone 16 rear cameras will revert back to iPhone 12 layout

0
[ad_1]

Apple is seemingly planning to change things up with the iPhone 16 rear cameras. According to a new report, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will revert back to iPhone 12 rear camera layout.

The iPhone 16 rear cameras will utilize the iPhone 12 layout

What does that mean? Well, ever since iPhone 13, the vanilla iPhones had rear cameras that were mounted diagonally. So, both the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 vanilla models utilized the same design for their two rear cameras.

Well, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will revert back to a vertical design. That is, at least, based on the information shared by @URedditor, a tipster. You can check out the image below to see what we mean, that’s an image of the iPhone 12, by the way.

iPhone 12 image 1003

Apple needs to rearrange some components on the inside, but there’s another reason for this

Why is Apple doing this? Well, it’ll do it because it needs to rearrange some components inside the phone. So it needs to move around the cameras inside the phone, and thus a new layout. On top of that, it’ll be easy to set apart from the iPhone 13 and 14. Or as the tipster said, it will make “the device instantly recognizable as the latest model”.

Just to be perfectly clear, we are talking about the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus here, not the iPhone 15 series. These two devices will launch next year, alongside the iPhone 16 Pro models.

As far as the iPhone 15 series is concerned, all models will utilize a Type-C port at the bottom. That goes for both non-Pro and Pro models. That’s also the very first time that iPhones utilize a Type-C port. The EU forced Apple’s hand on this.

All models will also feature a Dynamic Island on the front. That will be a first for vanilla iPhone models. Up until now, that feature was reserved for the ‘Pro’ variants only. It was around since last year, actually.

The upcoming iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will also feature thinner bezels than their predecessors. They’re actually expected to offer the thinnest bezels in the business.

New Xiaomi 13 Ultra update improves gaming & fixes bugs

0
[ad_1]

A new update has started rolling out to Xiaomi’s latest flagship. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra is getting the MIUI 14.0.13.0.TMACNXM update, which not only improves the gaming experience, but also squashes some bugs.

New Xiaomi 13 Ultra update improves gaming and more

This update is coming to the Chinese variant of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, as the global model didn’t launch yet. Installing Google Play Services on the phone is not a problem, though, and the device keeps functioning great after that. That’s why some people decided to import it. The Xiaomi 13 Ultra has proven to be a great camera smartphone.

In any case, this update fixes the frame rate issue in games. Thus providing you with an even smoother gaming experience overall. The company also fixed a faulty high-temperature warning when the phone isn’t warm, and the abnormal CPU power consumption in some cases.

On top of all that, the phone is getting the latest security update, an Android security update for May 2023. This is not exactly a huge update, but these are some useful fixes that Xiaomi rolled out.

We did not notice many issues while using the device, but it’s nice to see Xiaomi is trying to polish out the experience. There’s always something that can be improved.

It is one of two flagship smartphones Xiaomi announced this year

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra is one of two flagships Xiaomi announced this year. The other phone is the Xiaomi 13 Pro, which did launch globally already. Both are fantastic camera smartphones and devices overall, but the ‘Ultra’ has the upper hand.

It comes with an even more powerful camera setup, and that is noticeable in the final results. The difference is not huge, though, we’ve actually enjoyed using both phones, and were more than happy with the results from both.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 fuels this phone, while Xiaomi included plenty of LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 flash storage. A large 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate is also included. The same goes for 90W wired and 50W wireless charging, and so on.
