Parent groups rally to ban smartphones for children under 16

It’s no secret that in this day and age, smartphone addiction poses a significant threat to children. The constant barrage of notifications, social media updates, and addictive games can make it difficult for children to put their phones down, leading to negative impacts on mental health, relationships, and academic performance. As a result, the parent group UsforThem has launched a campaign urging the UK government to ban smartphones for children under 16 and implement “tobacco-style health warnings” on mobile phone packaging.

The campaign has already gained traction amongst experts and MPs, including school reformer Katharine Birbalsingh, who believes that banning smartphones for children under 16 is necessary.

Birbalsingh argues the law already bans children from engaging in activities like drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and watching certain films, so it makes sense to also ban smartphones. Additionally, British actress Sophie Winkleman, who also supports the movement, stated that the regular use of phones and social media apps, such as TikTok, hampers children’s ability to learn.

“The internet is a toxic wilderness we’re letting children stumble through without protection. I lived in California and spent time with bigwigs in Silicon Valley, and tellingly they did not let their children anywhere near screens,” said Winkleman.

Limiting children’s smartphone usage with parental controls

While the idea of banning smartphones for children may seem extreme, considering the increasing use of online classes, parents can still limit their children’s use of these devices without resorting to a ban.

Both iOS and Android offer parental control features that allow parents to set limits on their children’s app usage. For instance, Screen Time on iOS and Digital Wellbeing on Android both allow parents to set up usage restrictions, app limits, and content and privacy filter. Moreover, parents can also require approval for app installations and manage in-app purchases. Still, even with these parental management tools, it seems that some feel a ban is a more appropriate measure.

Edifier QD35 Review: Eye-catching design, ear-catching sound

For some people, it’s not enough that their speakers sound good, they also have to look good. Edifier just unveiled its QD35 speaker, and it’s a device that strives to match great audio with great visuals. It’s a speaker with a built-in array of LED lights.

Android Headlines was given the opportunity to review this speaker, and we spent about three weeks testing it out. So, is this speaker worth your money, or is it just a big light show? Let’s find out.

Edifier QD35: Design and build quality

Without a doubt, the design is the most notable aspect of this speaker. The Edifier QD35 is a beautifully-crafted piece of hardware that’s a treat for the eyes as much as it is for the ears.

It almost has the aesthetic of devices from Carl Pei’s Nothing devices. The front of the device is made from transparent plastic, and it lets us see the LED light strips that line the bottom of the speaker and encircle the two drivers.

The lights and the drivers all sit against a reflective backing that resembles circuitry, and it looks stunning when it reflects the LED lights. When the lights are shining, it’s a sight to behold. Edifier really hit a home run with the design of the QD35.

Build quality

The build quality is another area where this speaker shines. When picking it up or touching it, you can feel that it was built using quality materials. The chassis is made from plastic, but it doesn’t feel cheap at all. Picking it up, you can feel a significant heft to it.

There are several buttons on the speaker, and none of them jiggle in their sockets or feel mushy. They’re all clicky and tactile. I have no complaints about the build quality. It’s a $200 speaker that feels like a $200 speaker.

Now, let’s get down to the sound. As you can see, there are two drivers jutting from this speaker’s chassis. The smaller one is responsible for the higher frequencies and the larger one is for the lower frequencies. This tweeter/woofer combo makes for a great audio experience.

In my testing, it’s been able to produce a pleasantly balanced sound out of the box. It gets the job done with no complaints- but it’s not the greatest, to be honest. However, this is where the EQ presets and the custom equalizer come in handy. When you press the top knob twice, you’ll switch between different EQ modes. There’s a music, cinema, gaming, and custom EQ mode.

Each preset has its own characteristics, but using the custom EQ setting will give you more control over your sound. In order to customize your EQ, you’ll need to download the Edifier Connect app on your device. When you tap on the EQ option, you’ll be able to switch between the modes there too. When you go to the DIY setting, you’ll be able to tailor the sound to your liking.

The app has a 6-band EQ- the bands are 62Hz, 250Hz, 1KHz, 4KHz, 8KHz, and 16KHz- that lets you tune the sound. When you make the adjustments, you’ll hear them take effect right away.

With a few adjustments to the EQ, the sound really takes on a whole new feeling. The sound quality of this speaker is good out of the box, but can really shine when you make your adjustments.

 LDAC

If you want a higher bitrate when you’re listening to your music, you have the option to enable the LDAC audio codec on the speaker. This will give you higher-quality audio, which is great for audiophiles.

When you enable it, you’ll have two options. There’s the option for a sampling rate of 48KHz/44.1KHz. This gives you a high-quality sound with lower latency. However, if you want clearer audio, you can opt for the 96KHz sampling rate. This will have the best audio, but there will be a higher latency.

A huge part of this speaker’s aesthetic is the set of LED lights that sit on the inside of it. The lights reflect off of the glossy plastic back, and it makes for a heck of a show. On the right side of the speaker, there are two knobs. The bottom one adjusts the lights. Pressing it in will cycle through the five preset patterns.

Each pattern gives the speaker a certain personality. Rotating the knob adjusts the brightness of the lights. If you want to turn the lights off completely, you’ll just need to turn the brightness all the way down.

Customizing them

You’ll really see the potential of these lights once you open the Edifier Connect app. In the app, you’ll see unique customizations for each preset, and these customizations go deep. When you tap on the preset, you’ll see a grid of 34 colors that you can assign to the lights.

If you want more granular controls, you can tap on the preset button again to dial in the exact color you want. You can either enter the RGB values or the HEX code. If you want to save that color as a preset, you can press the “+” button on the bottom.

Not only that, but you can also change the speed of the light pattern. Most patterns have some sort of motion to them. Some pulsate and some light individual LEDs to create all types of motion. There’s a button that lets you control how fast the lights move and operate.

Additional light patterns

You can cycle through five patterns using the hardware button, but there are more that you can access in the app. There’s a stationary setting that keeps the lights on and four more that can be accessed in the More section. You, unfortunately, don’t have as many customization options for those, but they’re still nice to have.

Gripes

There are a few gripes that I have with this speaker and their minor at best. For starters, there are only 16 volume levels. This makes it tough to find the right volume at times.

The only other gripe is that you can’t turn off the front display. On the front of the speaker, you’ll see the time along with which EQ mode you’re using. It’d be nice if there was a way to turn it off completely. They’re pretty bright, especially at night.

Conclusion

All in all, Edifier did a knock-out job on the QD35. The sound is well-balanced and very customizable. Also, it’s a beautiful piece of hardware that really catches the eye. For the price of $200, I highly recommend that you pick it up.

Elon Musk described owning Twitter as “quite painful”

In an interview with BBC, Elon Musk said his experience of owning Twitter has been “quite painful” and like a “rollercoaster.”

The billionaire took over Twitter for $44bn in October last year. Since then, he has been making the headlines for various reasons, including laying off staff or adding new features to the platform. In a recent interview with BBC, Musk talked about his experience as the Twitter owner and the way he’s running the company.

First, Elon Musk said he bought Twitter because a judge would probably force him to complete the purchase after the initial buyout offer. To renew your memory, Musk wanted to withdraw his offer to buy Twitter because he believed the company lied about the number of users. Twitter later tried to sue him because of his withdrawal.

The interesting thing about the interview is Twitter has recently labeled BCC as a government-funded media while it claims it’s a publicly funded network. Musk said he would change the label while he knows “BBC is generally not thrilled about being labeled state media.”

The billionaire added that he has been in a “really quite a stressful situation over the last several months” but never regretted the decision and believed it was the right thing to do. Additionally, everything in the company is going “reasonably well.” Musk also alluded to his habit of sleeping in the office, saying he has a couch in a library “that nobody goes to.”

One of the most controversial decisions by Elon Musk was reducing the Twitter staff from over 8,000 to about 1,500. Musk said he didn’t fire employees in person because it’s impossible to talk to many people face to face. He also believes the decision was not “uncaring” because “if the whole ship sinks, then nobody’s got a job.”

Lastly, the second richest man on the planet says the company is now “roughly breaking even” as advertisers are returning. “We could be profitable, or to be more precise, cash flow positive this quarter if things keep going well. I think almost all advertisers have come back or said they are going to come back.” He added.

NVIDIA’s RTX 4070 GPU will launch at a pretty affordable $599

NVIDIA’s 40-series cards have been available in a few models since last year, but none of them were the RTX 4070, which the company just announced today alongside its official retail price. Of course, what NVIDIA charges for the MSRP of its in-house card compared to what its partners may charge is another story.

Not to mention the card could make its way to third-party sellers who will charge a premium, as has been the case since the 30-series cards launched a few years ago. But if you’re lucky enough to snag one at its normal price, you’ll be looking at paying a mostly reasonable $599.

Compared to the asking price of GPUs like the RTX 4090, the upcoming 4070 shouldn’t be out of the question for many PC gaming enthusiasts. Sure, it won’t have the performance power of the high-end cards. But if the absolute pinnacle of gaming graphics isn’t your main concern, it should serve to be a great upgrade for consumers who are on older GPUs. It may even be worth upgrading to if you’re on an RTX 3060. Of course that all depends on your personal wants as a gamer.

The RTX 4070 GPU will launch at a $599 price on April 13

Those who have been waiting on the RTX 4070 won’t have to wait much longer to purchase one. As NVIDIA confirms the newest GPU in its 40-series lineup will go on sale on April 13. It’ll be available from select retailers and should be available directly from NVIDIA. Though where you’re able to find one might depend on available stock. And considering the reasonable price, stock may not last long.

In addition to the Founders Edition card, the RTX 4070 will also be available from NVIDIA’s partners. Including PNY, ASUS, Colorful, Gainward, GALAX, GIGABYTE, INNO3D, KFA2, MSI, Palit, and Zotac. Prices for the partner models aren’t mentioned but they should be relatively close to what NVIDIA is offering.

Should you end up buying one of these cards between April 13 and May 8, you’ll get the Overwatch 2 Ultimate Battlepass as a freebie. Which comes with 2,000 Overwatch 2 coins, 20 tier skips and a bunch of other extras. Of course, you could also just sign up for GeForce NOW’s Ultimate tier which gives you RTX 4080 performance in the cloud if a new GPU isn’t in your budget.

One of the best games on PS5 is coming to PlayStation Plus

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is coming to PlayStation Plus this month, and if you didn’t get a chance to play this beautiful PS5 game when it came out, now is a great time to dive in and give it a shot.

This is an action-adventure title that mixes in elements of puzzle solving and action combat. And everything is wrapped up with a neat little bow in some beautiful graphics with some pretty stunning art direction. It also has a really cool narrative with some pretty adorable characters. It’s just an all-around wonderful game from indie studio Ember Lab.

For a time it was also on our Best PS5 Games list, and that spot was well-earned. Now you don’t have to purchase the game in full if you already subscribe to PlayStation Plus. Though even at full cost the game is certainly worth the money.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits comes to PlayStation Plus on April 18

While the game is available to buy on PS5 right now, Kena: Bridge of Spirits won’t be on PlayStation Plus for about another week. If you’ve held off this long on playing it, you won’t have trouble waiting six more days.

The one things players want to be aware of is that this is not one of the April free games. Though you probably already know if you subscribe to the service. This will be a title added to the PlayStation Plus game catalog. So you’ll need either PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium to access the game without buying it on the console.

If you’d prefer to just buy it, you can buy the Standard Edition for only $18 right now. However, that sale price ends today, April 12, then it goes back up to $39.99. You can also currently pick up the Digital Deluxe Edition for $22.49 (normally $49.99), and that sale lasts until April 26. And honestly, the Deluxe Edition is the better deal.

What is Max? Everything you need to know

Warner Bros Discovery has finally given us more information on the new combined, streaming service that is set to launch this Spring. The service is going to simply be called “Max”. It’s going to combine HBO MAX and Discovery+ into a single mega streaming service. And in this article, we’re going to go over everything you need to know.

What is Max?

To put it simply, Max is going to be the name of the combined service of HBO MAX and Discovery+. Warner Media (now back to its original name of Warner Brothers) merged with Discovery last year. Which is why we’re seeing this merger of the streaming services.

While HBO MAX was the merger of Warner Media and HBO, putting all of the Warner Bros library onto HBO. Now with this rebranding, the library is growing even more. With Discovery content being added. That means content from HGTV, TLC and much more will be available.

Will it replace HBO MAX?

Yes. When Max launches, it will replace the existing HBO MAX app on all platforms in the US. Much like HBO MAX replaced HBO Go on all platforms.

Will discovery+ be replaced too?

Yes and no. Discovery+ content will be added to Max, but the streaming service Discovery+ will continue to remain on its own. WBD executives decided to keep it around even after Max launches, because they didn’t want to lose those customers that only want Discovery content. And considering discovery+ starts at $4.99, that would be a pretty big price increase for Max. Going from $5 to $10 per month.

When does Max Launch?

According to Warner Bros Discovery, Max is going to launch in the US on May 23. It will take over the current HBO MAX app. So on May 23, you’ll see the app get a slight makeover (we don’t yet know how much of a makeover), with all the new content.

Where will Max be available?

At launch, it’ll only be available in the US. WBD has stated that it will start to roll Max out to international markets where HBO MAX is currently available, starting with Latin America in the later part of 2023. With other countries across Europe and Asia in 2024.

How much will Max cost?

Pricing for Max is pretty similar to what HBO Max was. But now, WBD has added a third tier. Here’s how the tiers break down.

  • Max Ad-Lite: $9.99/month or $99.99/year. 2 concurrent streams, 1080p resolution 30 offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound.
  • Max Ad Free: $15.99/month or $149.99/year. 2 concurrent streams 1080 resolution, 30 offline downloads, 5.1 surround sound quality
  • Max Ultimate Ad Free: $19.99/month or $199.99/year. 4 concurrent streams, up to 4K UHD resolution, 100 offline downloads, Dolby Atmos sound quality

What kind of content will be available?

To put it simply, everything on HBO MAX and Discovery+ will be available on Max. But it’ll also bring in some other content and originals too.

What features will be available at launch?

While HBO MAX has been out for a few years already and has put out some really nice features, Warner Bros Discovery are also promising some features for the launch of Max. These include:

  • Premium Video Playback: A new video playback experience will deliver smooth and cinematic video to users, wherever and however they prefer to watch. Whether binging their favorites, watching offline on-the-go, or tuning in on Sunday nights for the latest episode of Succession, users can count on seamlessly diving into their preferred worlds.
  • Personalization: Max will expand personalization beyond just the home page, offering a differentiated and high-performing experience for every user across the whole service.  By significantly increasing our investment in machine learning while maintaining an editorial voice, Max will deliver a unique human and machine approach that will help surface the best content for our users.
  • More Prominent Kids Experience: At launch, Max will introduce a default kids profile for new subscribers along with accompanying parental controls. Parents can choose to customize settings and select to limit content for the kids profile by ratings: little kids (tv-y), big kids (tv-y7, tvy7-fv), big kids plus (tv-g, g), preteens (tv-pg/pg), or teens (tv-14, pg-13). Parents will also have the ability to set individual profile PINs to lock access to their adult profiles, as well as a parent code to lock their children inside of the Max kids experience.
  • Simplified Navigation: Max works harder so viewers don’t have to. Streamlined categories, improved content details pages, shortcuts, dedicated brand hubs and thematic content rails, make exploring the app and discovering new interests easier. The updated design coupled with a better personalization engine will help consumers quickly find and discover the best of what they are looking for.
  • 4K UHD: The Ultimate Ad-Free tier of Max will have an expanded catalog of content available in 4K UHD including key programming such as Game of Thrones, The Last of Us, Harry Potter, Lord of the RingsThe Dark Knight Trilogy and more. All Warner Bros. movies released this year and going forward will also be available in 4K UHD when they arrive on Max following their theatrical windows.

It’s been almost half a year since the revolutionary ChatGPT was released. Amazingly, it reached 100 million users in just two months.

ChatGPT has an unimaginable potential to answer things that need a lot of research. Due to its increasingly demanding usage, securing it from threat actors is also essential. 

The Microsoft-backed platform has launched its Bug Bounty Program on BugCrowd. Many Security researchers have already found some vulnerabilities on ChatGPT, and we’re posting them now and then.

However, it is now an excellent opportunity for security professionals to report their bugs and get rewarded for their work.

Their rewards are below as per their Bug bounty program and the VRT (Vulnerability Rating Taxonomy) of Bugcrowd.

  • P4 – $200 – $500
  • P3 – $500 – $1000
  • P2 – $1000 – $2000
  • P1 – $2000 – $6500

The program also mentioned that the reward can go up to a maximum of $20,000, making it a huge reward for critical bugs. So far, 14 Vulnerabilities have been reported on the program.

Scope of the Program

The following applications are in scope.

  • ChatGPT, ChatGPT Plus, Logins, Subscriptions, OpenAI-created Plugins created by users, and all other functionalities.

Bugs that can be reported include,

  • XSS or Stored XSS
  • CSRF
  • SQLi
  • Authentication and Authorization Issues
  • Data Exposure
  • Payment based bugs
  • Cloudflare Bypass to send traffic to unprotected endpoints
  • Running queries on private models that are not available to the Public
  • Browsing or Code Interpreter Plugins created by OpenAI
  • SSRF
  • OAuth Flaws
  • Credential Security and making plugin calls to unrelated domains

Since OpenAI has access to the entire internet, issues related to Google Workspace, Asana, Trella, Jira, Monday.com, Notion, Hubspot, and many more related issues related to OpenAI can also be reported.

However, there are restrictions to perform additional security testing on these companies.

Though most bugs are eligible for reporting, some of the bugs listed below are out of the program’s scope.

  • SSL/TLS Cipher security issues with PoC
  • Server error messages without exploit proof
  • Old/EoL browser/ plugins related issues and much more

HBO MAX & discovery+ combined service launching May 23

Today, Warner Bros Discovery has announced that its new combined streaming service will launch in the US on May 23. The service, as had been widely reported, will be called simply Max.

Since Warner Media and Discovery merged, there was talk about a combined streaming service, and that day has come. Originally, Warner Bros Discovery planned to merge discovery+ completely within HBO MAX. But it became a better idea to merge the two into a new service instead.

While the company has announced a lot of things today, there’s still a lot that we don’t know about Max. Like, how much it’ll cost. It would be surprising to see it come in cheaper than the current HBO MAX pricing. We’re expecting something around $15-$20 for ad-supported and $20 or more for ad-free. Keep in mind that it will have a ton of content, arguably a lot more than Netflix.

Goodbye, HBO

Surprisingly, WBD is going to be getting rid of HBO. HBO, which stands for Home Box Office, first launched in 1972, as a premium movie channel that was ad-free on cable. It then morphed into a streaming service, and finally after AT&T bought Time Warner, it was rebranded as HBO MAX, and added all of the Warner Bros content onto HBO MAX, as well as adding some licensed content.

Now, HBO is done. It’ll simply be called “Max”. Which is an interesting position for the company to take. As HBO and Discovery are both household names. And either one being used in the name for the new service would have been a good idea. But we’ll have to see how this works out when the service launches next month.

What’s interesting here is that while Max will be the new combined service, WBD is keeping discovery+ around. And that’s because it has a pretty loyal following. And getting customers that prefer reality TV who are paying about $5 per month, to now pay double, triple or even quadruple, is going to be a hard sell. So discovery+ customers, you’ll be able to stick with discovery+.

US, India and China Most Targeted in DDoS Attacks, StormWall Q1 2023 Report

StormWall projects a 170% increase in DDoS Attacks by the end of 2023 and urges businesses to implement mitigation strategies.

Leading cybersecurity provider, StormWall, has released a comprehensive report on the state of Distributed Denial of Service attacks (DDoS attacks) in Q1 2023. The report, based on an analysis of attacks on StormWall’s clients across various sectors, reveals a significant increase of 47% in DDoS attacks compared to the same period last year.

The findings, shared with Hackread.com, highlight a worrisome trend of botnet usage and a growing practice of smokescreening to conceal multi-vector attacks.

The study reveals that attackers are increasingly targeting critical infrastructure and services, including logistical services, payment processing hubs, and banking systems, in an attempt to impact a larger number of users. The average attack strength reached a peak of 1.4 Tbps, and the longest attack lasted for 4 days.

Among the sectors targeted, the financial industry experienced the highest number of attacks, accounting for 34% of the total and witnessing a staggering 68% increase compared to Q1 2022. E-commerce also faced significant challenges, enduring 22% of the attacks and experiencing a 51% increase from the previous year. Telecommunications remained a popular target, with 16% of the attacks and a 47% year-over-year increase.

The use of botnets in DDoS attacks continues to gain traction, with over 38% of attacks leveraging networks of compromised devices. Additionally, the practice of smokescreening, where DDoS attacks are used as decoys in multi-vector assaults, increased by 28% compared to the previous year.

The report also reveals that more destructive HTTP attacks are becoming increasingly accessible to run. As a result, 82.3% of DDoS attacks targeted the application layer (L7), while 11.7% were directed at the transport (L4) and network (L3) layers of the OSI model. DNS was targeted in 2.3% of the attacks, and the remaining 3.7% were aimed at other targets.

Geographically, the United States (17.6% attack share), India (14.2%), and China (11.7%) remain the most targeted countries. However, the United Arab Emirates saw a notable surge in attacks, with the proportion nearly doubling from 3.8% in Q1 2022 to 6.4% in the current year. Russia and Ukraine, on the other hand, experienced a decline in DDoS activity as hacktivism subsided.
