The Ukrainian Cyber Police recently announced that they had arrested several members of a criminal group accused of stealing over $4.3 million through phishing scams from more than 1,000 victims across Europe.

The fraudulent websites advertised goods at prices below the market rate. Victims entered their credit card details to pay for the fake orders, which the criminals used to embezzle money from their accounts.

Two Ukrainian-based suspects were detained, who are believed to be organizers of the criminal gang. Ten other cyber criminals involved in the phishing scams were caught by the authorities in other European countries. The Czech Republic Cyber Police cooperated with law enforcement officials for this arrest.

The attackers created two call centres, located in Vinnytsia and Lviv, to support the fraudulent operation. The call centre operators convinced customers to place orders.

As part of an international police operation, the authorities carried out more than 30 searches at the suspects’ residences, call centers, and vehicles, seizing computer equipment, mobile phones, and SIM cards for analysis. 

It is still unknown how the victims arrived at the fraudulent websites. They could have been victims of malvertising, phishing emails, or even direct messages on social media platforms. The stolen information, including credit card details, was used by criminals to buy products online.

Usually, the goods are transferred through a chain of resellers and individuals who assist in hiding the money trail, commonly known as money mules. The police are still investigating the case to identify other members of the group.

According to Cyber Police’s press release, criminal proceedings have been initiated against the perpetrators under Part 4 of Art. 190 (Fraud) and Part 1 of Art. 255 (Creation, management of a criminal community or criminal organization, as well as participation in it) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Those found guilty of the crimes could face up to twelve years in prison with confiscation of property.

Nokia plans to make communication between earthlings and astronauts visiting the Moon easy. The Finnish telecommunications giant is preparing to launch a 4G network on Earth’s natural satellite later this year. This will not only boost humanity’s efforts to make lunar discoveries but also pave the way for human presence on the lunar surface.

According to a report from CNBC, Nokia announced its plans to deploy 4G networks on the Moon during this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC), which was held in late February in Barcelona.

SpaceX rocket to ferry Nokia’s equipment to the Moon

If things go as planned, US-based private space company Intuitive Machines will launch its Nova-C lunar lander aboard a SpaceX rocket. The payload will also include Nokia’s antenna-equipped base station. Besides, a solar-powered rover will also accompany the equipment, CNBC cited Nokia principal engineer, Luis Maestro Ruiz De Temino.

Once the hardware reaches the Shackleton crater, an LTE connection will be established between the rover and the lander. While it sounds like the hardware will be used by astronauts for surfing online, in reality, Nokia is aiming to support the next crewed lunar mission, Artemis 1.

The 4G network will enable astronauts to communicate with each other and with mission control. Not just that! The network will also allow them to control the rover remotely and stream and transmit data back to Earth, all in real-time. Nokia believes its technology is capable of lasting through extreme conditions of space.

Nokia claims that the lunar network will “provide critical communication capabilities for many different data transmission applications, including vital command and control functions, remote control of lunar rovers, real-time navigation and streaming of high definition video.”

Finding ice on the Moon with the help of 4G

Using its network, Nokia hopes to help space agencies look for ice on the lunar surface. Much of the Moon’s surface is currently dry, but recent uncrewed missions have discovered ice remnants trapped in craters around the Moon’s poles.

If the mission discovers ice, it can be broken up into hydrogen and oxygen and used as rocket fuel. Moreover, the extracted water can be used for drinking and can also provide breathable oxygen to astronauts who stay on the lunar surface for extended periods. Internet may not be the only thing we’ll need to live on the Moon, it’ll still be a huge leap in humanity’s lunar ambitions.

The company added “While we’ve made a lot of progress in this area, we know that scammers continue to evolve — and we will too. Our teams will continue working around the clock and investing in the latest technology to keep contributed content on Google Maps authentic, safe and reliable.”

The Google Maps app, as Google pointed out, is counted on by mobile device users to help take them safely from point “A” to point “B.” It also tells you where to eat, sleep, shop, and catch entertainment when users do get to “B.”

Do not confuse Cylance Ransomware with the Blackberry-owned Cylance cybersecurity company.

The cybersecurity researchers at Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 have discovered a new strain of Cylance Ransomware, which has already claimed several victims. Researchers noticed it early Friday morning, and further probing revealed that it is targeting Linux and Windows devices.

As of now, insufficient information is available about Cylance Ransomware, indicating that it is a relatively recent emergence. The ransom note received by victims was published by Unit 42 which contains the attackers’ email addresses, but surprisingly not the ransom amount. Here is the content of the ransom note:

“All your files are encrypted, and currently unusable, but you need to follow our instructions. Otherwise, you can’t return your data (never. It’s just a business. We absolutely do not care about you and your deals, except getting benefits. If we do not do our work and liabilities – nobody will cooperate with us. It’s not in our interests.”

“To check the ability of returning files, we decrypt one file for free. That is our guarantee. If you will not cooperate with our service – for us, it does not matter. But you will lose time and data, cause just we have the private key. time is more valuable than money.”

It is believed that the amount will be disclosed to the victim when they contact the attacker. The attackers have warned against any attempt to restore or change the files, as it would destroy the private key, which means the data will be lost forever.

Attack Methodology

In a tweet, researchers explained that the modus operandi of the ransomware attack involves encrypting files and appending them with a “.Cylance” extension. In addition, a text file titled “Read Me” is added to all encrypted files’ folders. This file contains the attacker’s ransom note.

Who is Distributing Cylance Ransomware?

For your information, Cylance is actually a cybersecurity company owned by BlackBerry Ltd. The company is known for mitigating and preventing ransomware attacks on enterprise organizations. However, why threat actors named the ransomware after this company is unclear, or it could be that they are looking for extra attention or to negatively impact Cylance in the long run.

Although Cylance ransomware is still in its early stages, it will be crucial to monitor its targets and wait for more information from the infosec community. Currently, samples of the ransomware are available on MalwareBazaar, a project by abuse.ch that shares malware samples with the infosec community, AV vendors, and threat intelligence providers.

It has been reported by the Recorded Future’s Insikt Group that RedGolf, a Chinese state-sponsored threat actor group, was using a backdoor designed especially for Windows and Linux systems called KEYPLUG to infiltrate networks.

As one of the world’s most prolific threat groups, RedGolf has been active against a variety of industries around the world for many years.

RedGolf Infrastructure & TTPs

There is a history of this group developing and using a variety of custom malware families over the years. It has demonstrated an ability to weaponize newly reported vulnerabilities quickly.

KEYPLUG Malware

During 2021 and 2022, RedGolf targeted US state government entities using KEYPLUG, a custom and modular Linux backdoor.

Several KEYPLUG samples and infrastructures that RedGolf used from at least 2021 until 2023 have been identified by Insikt Group.

In a campaign that compromised the security of at least six state governments in the USA, RedGolf heavily used the KEYPLUG platform between May 2021 and February 2022, as first exposed by Google-owned Manidant in March 2022.

KEYPLUG C2, including the following, supports a total of 5 network protocols:-

Technical Analysis

In October 2022, Malwarebytes published information on a separate set of attacks exploiting an unexplored implant dubbed DBoxAgent to use KEYPLUG on government entities in Sri Lanka early in August of that year.

As Recorded Future puts it, these campaigns appear to share a very close connection with RedGolf’s campaign, which was also attributed to Winnti  (aka APT41, Barium, Bronze Atlas, or Wicked Panda).

According to security analysts, the latest RedGolf activity has not yet been associated with any specific victimology.

Due to the overlaps between this action and previously reported cyber espionage campaigns, they believe these activities may be conducted for intelligence purposes instead of financial gain or profit.

Furthermore, it was noted that the hacking group used other tools such as Cobalt Strike and PlugX in addition to the KEYPLUG samples and its operational infrastructure, which is codenamed GhostWolf.

42 IP addresses comprise the GhostWolf infrastructure and are used as commands and controls for the KEYPLUG system.

To gain initial access to targets’ networks, RedGolf will keep demonstrating the operational tempo that will allow it to rapidly exploit vulnerabilities in externally facing enterprise appliances and quickly weaponize those vulnerabilities.

Recommendation

To defend against RedGolf attacks, organizations are required to follow the mitigations recommended by the experts that we have mentioned below:-

  • Ensure that patches are applied regularly.
  • Check access to the devices connected to the networks external to the organization.
  • Identify the command and control infrastructure used by threat actors and block it.
  • To monitor for malware, intrusion detection, and prevention systems need to be configured in a way that they detect malware.

So, just to be clear, the iPhone 15 Pro models will not only have solid-state power and volume rocker buttons, but the alert slider is also becoming a thing of the past. It will be replaced by an ‘Action’ button, which will have a similar goal, but it’ll feel different to use.

The ‘Pro’ series will also include a periscope camera, it seems

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max/Ultra are also tipped to include a periscope camera. That camera will seemingly replace the 3x telephoto camera on current-gen models.

All iPhone 15 models will feature a Dynamic Island, and a Type-C port at the bottom. Apple may limit that Type-C port, though, and require special cables to either use it at all, or use it to its full capability.

Apple will announce its brand new iPhones later this year, in September. Four models are expected, the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max/Ultra.

Samsung really wants iPhone users to get a taste of what using a Samsung device is like, and to make sure of it, it has released a new web app that allows them to try out the One UI interface right from their existing devices.

As reported by 9to5Google, the new “Try Galaxy” demo tool. can be accessed directly from its website, where you are then prompted to scan a QR code for the link to access the experience. The demo features a selection of interactive apps and features drawn from across the One UI platform, specifically One UI 5.1 on the Galaxy S23, Galaxy Z Flip 4, and Galaxy Z Fold 4 devices.
The “Try Galaxy” app was launched a year ago to highlight the features found in the One UI platform and was recently updated to include more elements from the Galaxy experience, such as the camera, the performance, and the connected ecosystem. However, this latest update is mostly focusing on enticing iPhone users as it is no longer usable with other Android devices.

Currently, accessing the website from another Android device will return a message stating that the experience was designed specifically for iPhone users, alluding to the fact that Samsung is not interested in using this app to lure users away from other Android devices, such as the Pixel.

However, when using an iPhone, you are given access to a comprehensive demo of One UI, including the ability to use themes and even SMS – using fake text messages that is. Interestingly, RCS messaging is not shown on this demo, which seems like an odd omission. Additionally, you can try more of Samsung’s core apps such as the object eraser tool, Samsung Health, Smart Switch, and Kids Mode.

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Demo is an excellent opportunity for iPhone users to get a feel for the interface that is known as One UI. The demo is intuitive to use and packed with a variety of features that give users the ability to personalize the user experience in accordance with their preferences. The demo is also compatible with any model of iPhone that is running iOS 15 or newer and an excellent method to get a feel for One UI before making any purchasing decisions.
