Secureworks Counter Threat Unit researchers are tracking the INC Ransom group known as GOLD IONIC.

Emerging in August 2023, this threat group employs double extortion tactics – exfiltrating data before encryption, then threatening public exposure to pressure victims into paying ransoms.

Between August 2023 and March 2024, the Tor leak site of GOLD IONIC published the names of 72 victims, adding 7 in April 2024. It has spread globally despite focusing on American victims from the industrial, healthcare, and education sectors.

SecureWorks said that GOLD IONIC seems to be a solo group that encrypts files for ransom rather than having affiliates.

There appears to be a consistent pattern in monthly numbers, with possible exceptions posted as batched releases.

Like many financially motivated groups, GOLD IONIC conducts indiscriminate, opportunistic attacks across geographies and sectors.

However, most victims are U.S.-based organizations, with a significant gap to the second-most impacted country, the UK.

The prevalence of Western victims and lack of those from Commonwealth of Independent States countries suggests the group likely operates out of Russia or a CIS nation. 

No sector stands out, though industrial, healthcare, and education organizations are the most common targets, with educational establishments over-represented compared to other ransomware groups from August 2023 to March 2024.

In Secureworks’ incident response engagements, GOLD IONIC consistently deploys INC ransomware. One case potentially involved initial access via the “Citrix Bleed” vulnerability (CVE-2023-4966), an initial vector favored by LockBit affiliates. 

Post-intrusion, the attacker dropped a Meterpreter shell, enumerated Active Directory, archived and exfiltrated over 70GB of data using WinRAR and Megasync, then copied the victim-named INC ransomware binary to over 500 systems and executed it remotely via PsExec to encrypt files. 

The INC ransom note instructs contacting the threat actor within 72 hours via a “.onion” address to avoid data leaks.

While the leak site resembles LockBit’s, there are no other known connections between the groups.

The INC Ransom leak site lists some victims of other ransomware groups. One case involved files and a ransom note format matching ALPHV ransomware by GOLD BLAZER.

Financially motivated affiliates may act in self-interest, even stealing data to post elsewhere with modified ransom contacts. 

Some affiliates have deployed up to seven ransomware families. While the dynamic affiliate-operator relationship could explain cross-posting on leak sites.

Google is adding native support for satellite messaging to Android OS this year. Android 15 Developer Preview 2 introduced the new feature. With platform-level support, all that OEMs need is a specialized modem to bring satellite communication to their devices. Google itself plans to offer satellite-based emergency messaging on all of its upcoming products.

Someone managed to get early access to the Pixel UI for this Satellite SOS feature. Shared on a Telegram channel, we have multiple screenshots and a video showing the feature in action. Like on Apple’s iPhones, satellite messaging on Pixels will require you to point the phone to the satellite. You can do that by moving a satellite icon to the center of a circle shown on the screen.

It may take a while for the phone to establish a satellite connection. You have to keep the icon at the center for a strong connection. While it is initially a full-screen UI, Google lets you minimize it to a floating window, so you can keep using the phone while it looks for a satellite to connect. The company also advises users to “get a clear view of sky by avoiding buildings, trees and mountains.” These obstacles can block the signal.

Once the connection is established, your device will ask you a few questions that help emergency services get a clear picture of your situation and deploy help accordingly. Based on these screenshots, Google may limit satellite connectivity on the new Pixels to emergency messages. The feature is unlikely to trickle down to older Pixels due to hardware limitations.

Starting today, YouTube announced that is testing an optional personalized Subscriptions feed on mobile. An optional “Most Relevant” view for Subscriptions feeds should be available for select YouTube users.

Since this is an optional feature, regular Subscriptions feed will remain the default setting, so you won’t have to worry about the experiment messing up your feed in case you don’t want to be part of it.

YouTube points out that the experiment is rolling out to a small percentage of viewers on mobile. Furthermore, the company says that the availability of the feature will be expanded based on feedback received from users.

Fitbit app redesigned Sleep page now rolling out more widely

The Fitbit app recently got a redesign of its Sleep stats page, and now it is finally rolling out more widely. This way, Google continues to implement its Material You design language in all elements of the app.

Google had started implementing Material You guidelines in the Fitbit app last year. However, for one reason or another, the Sleep stats section hadn’t yet received a “facelift.” Now, the Fitbit app’s tweaked Sleep stats UI is reaching more people.

Fitbit users do not need to update the app to receive the new Sleep stats page. The change is happening through a server-side update. Once it is available, you can easily access it by tapping on the “Your sleep profile” card.

You will notice that the new page has four tabs: “Day”, “Week”, “Month”, and “Year.” This will allow you to easily check your sleep metrics by time segments. The new design also aims to ensure that you get key data at a glance, a philosophy that Google follows in some of its apps and services. For example, now the data for parameters such as your sleep score, sleep duration, and sleep timeline are visible in the same section.

Additionally, pressing and holding on your sleep chart will allow you to “know exactly what time you woke up last night.” If you continue browsing the new UI, you will find the “More about your sleep” tab. Metrics such as your sleep heart rate, oxygen variation during your sleep, and snoring, among others, will be available there. This type of data is important even to identify possible health conditions to treat.

Likewise, there is a “see how your sleep patterns have changed over time” tab. So, basically, the new UI is designed to offer both a more appealing visual look and easy access to key data about your sleep.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 case may come with a larger battery

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 are not yet a confirmed pair of true wireless earbuds, but a recent leak about the battery capacity in the case suggests that they could be very soon. What’s more, it seems like the case will have a larger battery than the Pixel Buds Pro. Which in turn may hint at a larger battery in the earbuds themselves.

According to 91mobiles, the Pixel Buds Pro 2 case has shown up in a battery certification recently. Documentation found through two different organizations seems to signify that an official announcement may be imminent as well. Certification for the Pixel Buds Pro 2, or what’s thought to be the Pixel Buds Pro 2, has shown up at both UL Demko and Safety Korea. UL Demko operates out of Denmark and Safety Korea operates out of South Korea.

There’s not a lot known about the upcoming pair of true wireless earbuds. And the leak doesn’t give too much detail other than a couple of pieces of information. Specifically the capacity of the case battery and the model number. The documentation states that these earbuds have the model number listed as GH8TQ. For comparison, the original Pixel Buds Pro have a model number of either  GA34L, GQGM1, or GPX4H. You could look at the loosely similar configuration of the model numbers as a significant hint that this is Google’s upcoming pair. Seeing as they start with the letter G and the number is five characters long.

With this certification popping up, it’s possible Google might be looking to reveal these at Google I/O on May 14.

The Pixel Buds Pro 2 case will have a slightly larger battery

It’s important to note that this certification documentation doesn’t mean this is what consumers end up getting. But it does give a hint at what Google seems to be working with. If the information is accurate then the Pixel Buds Pro 2 may come with a case that has a 650mAh battery. The original model comes with a 620mAh battery capacity case. So Google looks to be increasing the battery inside the case this time around. Again, while not confirmed, this could point to the earbuds having a larger battery capacity as well.

The original model had decent battery life of up to 11 hours, or up to 31 with the case. Even if the upcoming model doesn’t have longer listening time on a single charge, the case would still potentially provide more overall usage time. And that would still be a beneficial thing.
