With anticipation building for Samsung‘s next-gen foldable smartphones, more information has hit the rumor mill. There are already rumors that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will be incredibly thin and feature a titanium frame. A recent post on the Korean platform Naver Blog has revealed additional details, including its design and weight.

According to a Naver Blog user identified as yeux1122, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will feature an improved UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) panel. It offers enhanced tactility and durability compared to the previous generations. Samsung has also made the hinge more sturdy and durable. All of this while still reducing the phone’s overall thickness. The upcoming foldable will allegedly measure just 11mm in thickness when folded. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 measures 13.4mm.

While a thinner profile could make the device weaker, Samsung might negate that by switching from aluminum to titanium. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 reportedly uses a different grade of titanium than the Galaxy S24 Ultra. A YouTuber recently showed that the Ultra has Grade 2 titanium, weaker than the iPhone 15 Pro’s Grade 5 titanium. Maybe the Korean firm will equip the new foldable with a better quality titanium material.

Samsung also plans to redesign the new Fold’s frame to match the Galaxy S24 series. Additionally, despite being thinner than the Fold 5, the device will reportedly pack a bigger battery. The tipster claims a 5% increase in the battery capacity, which could mean a typical capacity of 4,600mAh. The Fold 5 has a 4,400mAh battery. The company could have pulled this off by making the device significantly wider to allow for a wider cover display.

Elsewhere, the upcoming Samsung device will get an improved under-display camera (UDC). The Fold lineup has used a UDC for the second selfie camera on the inside since the third-gen model in 2021. The company has equipped all models with a 4MP solution so far. It reportedly doesn’t plan to increase the resolution this year. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 will bring improvements to the camera aperture and image quality.

The foldable may come in a 16GB RAM variant

Samsung is also considering offering the Galaxy Z Fold 6 with 16GB of RAM, paired with 1TB onboard storage. There should also be a 12GB RAM variant, while other storage options may include 256GB and 512GB, with no micro SD card support. The camera setup may remain unchanged over the Fold 5. The company plans to improve the image quality with enhanced software processing rather than fitting the device with new camera hardware.

The Korean firm prioritizing a thinner profile means the new foldable will lack a built-in S Pen, though it will support S Pen input. Meanwhile, this could help reduce the overall weight of the device. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 could weigh less than 250 grams. The Fold 5 weighs 253 grams. Samsung will unveil the device alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in July or August this year. The pricing structure may remain largely unchanged from 2023.

According to the latest report from TrendForce, foldable smartphone shipments are up 25% YoY. Companies sold 15.9 million foldable smartphones in 2023, which is a 25% increase compared to 2022.

The growth rate is below market expectations, though. That can be attributed to two main factors, says TrendForce. The first one is “consumer retention is low due to frequent maintenance issues faced by first-time foldable phone users, leading to a lack of confidence in the product”.

The second one is the current price points of foldable phones. They still have to reach the “sweet spot” for consumers, says the source. That second point is actually the most important one, as the growth of the foldable smartphone market is closely tied to it.

Samsung still reigns supreme in the foldable smartphone market. That’s not surprising at all considering what kind of a lead the company had in the last couple of years. Samsung also makes its foldables widely available, and they’re well-known at this point.

Its market share did drop compared to 2022, quite a bit, though. It had 80% of the market in 2022, a bit under 70% in 2023. Based on the report, that number is 66.4%.

Update now! ConnectWise ScreenConnect vulnerability needs your attention

ConnectWise is warning self-hosted and on-premise customers that they need to take immediate action to remediate a critical vulnerability in its ScreenConnect remote desktop software. This software is typically used in data-centers and for remote assistance. Together ConnectWise’s partners manage millions of endpoints (clients).

A Shadowserver scan revealed approximately 3,800 vulnerable ConnectWise ScreenConnect instances on Wednesday, most of them in the US.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added the vulnerability to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog. ConnectWise has shared three IP addresses that were recently used by threat actors:

  • 155.133.5.15
  • 155.133.5.14
  • 118.69.65.60

These IP addresses are all blocked by ThreatDown and Malwarebytes solutions.

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database lists publicly disclosed computer security flaws. The flaw added to the CISA Catalog is CVE-2024-1709, an authentication bypass vulnerability with a CVSS score of 10 that could allow an attacker administrative access to a compromised instance. With administrative access it is trivial to create and upload a malicious ScreenConnect extension to gain Remote Code Execution (RCE).

Affected versions are ScreenConnect 23.9.7 and prior. Cloud partners don’t need to take any actions. ScreenConnect servers hosted in on screenconnect.com and hostedrmm.com have been updated to remediate the issue. 

Partners that are self-hosted or on-premise need to update their servers to version 23.9.8 immediately to apply a patch. ConnectWise will also provide updated versions of releases 22.4 through 23.9.7 for the critical issue, but strongly recommends that partners update to ScreenConnect version 23.9.8.

Galaxy S24’s first update with camera fixes arrives in the US, Europe

After an initial release in its homeland, South Korea, Samsung is now rolling out the first software update for the Galaxy S24 series in more markets. The much-awaited update is available in Australia, Europe, India, and the US. A global availability should be just around the corner.

Samsung brings Galaxy S24’s first update to more markets

Last week, the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra finally picked up their first software update. However, Samsung limited the rollout to South Korea. It has now expanded the availability of the update to other regions. We have reports confirming the rollout in Australia, Europe, India, and the US.

The update is rolling out widely across India, Australia, and Europe, including the UK. The new firmware build number for the phones in these regions is S92*BXXU1AXB5. Samsung is pushing an OTA (over the air) download file weighing over 746MB to the Ultra model. The update for the other two models should weigh similarly.

In the US, the Galaxy S24’s first update is available to both carrier-locked and unlocked units. The build numbers are S92*USQU1AXB7 and S92*U1UEU1AXB7, respectively. The file size varies depending on the device variant and model. It weighs 685MB for the carrier-locked Galaxy S24 Ultra and 677MB for the unlocked one.

Samsung should soon release the update to its latest flagships in the remaining few markets. If you are using a Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, or Galaxy S24 Ultra, watch out for a notification for the OTA release. You can also check for updates manually by navigating to Settings > Software update > Download and install.

The update brings camera and display fixes

The first update for the Galaxy S24 series brings a host of camera and display fixes. Samsung has improved the camera performance of the new flagships in more than one way. The company optimized the color saturation and white balance on Night mode shots, improved the quality of backlit shots in high-pixel mode (50MP/200MP), enhanced food photos, and optimized the Expert RAW app.

Samsung has also introduced a new color saturation slider in display settings. It lets you adjust the vividness of screen colors. The Galaxy S24 phones lacked this ability out of the box, making colors in the Vivid color profile look washed out as compared to the Galaxy S23 or older flagships. Along with all of these fixes, this update brings the February 2024 security patch. It patches more than 60 vulnerabilities.

$2 Deceptive Content Undermines Election Integrity

Deepfake technology poses a significant threat to the upcoming US elections as it is not just a technological challenge but a manifestation of a broader deception mechanism, explained Check Point Research (CPR).

In its latest report, cybersecurity researchers at Check Point Research team highlighted the dangers posed by the widespread availability of artificial intelligence-based technologies, particularly deepfake, in encouraging electoral fraud.

Researchers cited deepfake technology as a significant threat to the authenticity of the electoral process due to features like voice cloning that can manipulate voters and sabotage the entire process. The technology is cheap, accessible to anyone with an internet connection, and untraceable, which hinders election security given the ongoing challenges in legislating against these technologies.

Deepfake technology allows users to create “fabricated audiovisual content,” which poses a threat to public opinion and democratic institutions, researchers noted. With over 3,000 repositories on GitHub and hundreds of channels on Telegram (at least 400-500), deepfake services range from automated bots to personalized services. Pricing varies from $2 per video to $100 for multiple attempts, making it affordable to commission deceptive content.

Recent incidents of damage caused by deepfake technology highlight its growing threat. In February 2024, an Asian company fell victim to scammers who impersonated the company’s CFO during an online meeting, resulting in a loss of over $25 million.

On platforms like YouTube, deepfake technology is being exploited by scammers to perpetrate crypto scams. Verified channels have been targeted to steal millions of dollars worth of crypto, with deepfakes of prominent figures such as Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Ripple’s CEO Brad Garlinghouse, Michael J. Saylor, and others being used to deceive unsuspecting viewers.

In June 2023, deepfake technology was utilized to disseminate fabricated video messages from President Putin. Similarly, in 2022, a deepfake video of Ukrainian President Zelensky went viral, urging Ukrainians to surrender.

Despite efforts to combat deepfakes, such as the launch of McAfee’s tool MockingBird, which boasts a 90% accuracy rate in detecting malicious content, the potential damage from deepfake technology remains considerable and, in many cases, irreversible.

“The potential for election fraud through the adept use of artificial intelligence and deepfake technologies, orchestrated by a clandestine network operating from the shadows, leaving no digital fingerprints” Check Point Research Team wrote in the blog post published on 22 February 2024.

Researchers noted that an underground network of actors can manipulate public perception and undermine democratic integrity through deepfakes. The anonymity of this technology makes it difficult to hold anyone accountable. Traditional cybersecurity measures are insufficient as the threat lies in the entire ecosystem of deception it enables, including bots, fake accounts, and anonymized services.

Voice cloning, a subset of deepfake technology that uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to replicate a person’s voice with remarkable accuracy, is particularly effective in spreading misinformation. It allows the creation of convincing fake audio clips and is particularly effective in spreading misinformation, as incidents involving robocalls with fabricated messages from political leaders have already been observed.

For instance, a robocall featuring fake US President Joe Biden voice warning New Hampshire voters not to cast their ballots would cost from $10 to several hundred dollars depending on the level of accuracy and technological efficacy required.

To protect democratic processes from deepfakes, a multifaceted approach involving legislative measures, public awareness, technological solutions, and international cooperation is needed, including enhanced digital literacy and collaboration between technology companies and law enforcement, researchers concluded.

The phone does include an audio jack too

You’ll also notice that an audio jack is placed at the bottom, along with a Type-C USB port and a loudspeaker. It seems like the phone will be made out of metal and glass unless Motorola ends up opting for a plastic backplate which is unlikely.

The device will support 30W wired charging, and the display will have a centered display camera hole. The bottom bezel will be noticeably thicker than the rest of them, as you can see below.

The Motorola Moto G Power 2023 launched in April last year. We do expect this model to arrive around the same time unless Motorola opts to push up the launch date. The previous model cost $299, and the one for 2024 will likely have a similar price tag.

Meta is working on an AI wristband that can read brain signals

Planting chips in the human brain and designing AI-driven wearables to read brain signals seems to be the newest playground for tech firms and billionaires behind them. After Elon Musk-owned Neuralink reported its successful chip implementation in a human brain, Meta is the next company to step into this field with an AI-powered wristband.

In a recent announcement on the Morning Brew Daily podcast, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed his company is working on developing an AI wristband capable of reading brain signals and interpreting impulses coming from muscles.

Zuckerberg asserted Meta is “kind of close to having something here that we’re gonna have in a product in the next few years.” Meta gave a glimpse of this technology at the Meta Connect 2022 summit. But we might finally see the actual product in the coming years.

Meta reportedly has an AI-powered wristband in the works that’s capable of reading brain signals

As Zuckerberg explained, the Meta wristband relies on electromyography (EMG) technology to interpret the “nervous system signals” sent from the brain to the hands. Then, it converts data into gesture controls.

“In the future, you’ll essentially be able to type and control something by thinking about how you want to move your hand, but it won’t even be big motions, so I can just sit here, basically typing something to an AI,” Meta CEO added.

This groundbreaking technology can potentially revolutionize how we interact with computers and other devices in the future. Soon, you might be able to control devices with your brain signals.

Zuckerberg also seems confident about his company’s future product. While teasing Neuralink and its recent achievement, he said, “I don’t think anyone wants to put version one of that in their head.” He had also previously said Meta Quest 3 is a better product than the Apple Vision Pro.

The Meta’s revolutionary neural interface is still in the works, and there is no exact information yet about its launch. Meanwhile, it could launch along with the next-generation Meta Quest 4 Meta Ray-Bans smart glasses to offer a seamless and unified experience. These wallpapers are abstract, needless to say. You can check them out in the gallery below. Do note that the images in the gallery have been compressed, however. If you’d like to grab them in a higher resolution, tap the download link below the article. Do note that the wallpapers are not available in the resolution of the Xiaomi 14 Ultra’s display for some reason, which leads us to believe they’ve been compressed before being offered by GSMChina. They all come in 2048 x 922 resolution instead of 3200 x 1440.

You can download these wallpapers to basically any phone, and then adjust them when you set them, in case your phone’s display aspect ratio is different.

Point, shoot, type: Gboard’s new feature lets you scan text with your camera

Our smart devices simplify our lives in so many ways by helping us with everyday tasks, work, and entertainment. Since typing is something we all do regularly, it’s great to see tech companies working on making it quicker and simpler, too.

As per information from reliable leaker Mishaal Rahman (via Android Central), Google is introducing a new feature called Scan Text to Gboard. When you use the feature, your camera will open, taking up a bit more than half of your display. A button will appear at the bottom center, along with a tagline that says, “Take a photo of words to scan.”

Afterward, Gboard highlights all the text it identifies on the page. You can then insert the content captured from the photo into messages, notes, and other places. The feature also provides a quick preview of what it copied beside the insert button.
The new Scan Text feature on Gboard seems similar to Google Lens, but for some users, it might be quicker and more convenient. Google Lens is a handy smartphone app that uses your camera for tasks like text recognition and object searches. However, it’s important to know that Gboard’s new feature doesn’t save the photo to your device. It just captures it temporarily for copying and pasting before discarding it.

The latest Gboard feature is rolling out in the newest Gboard beta (version 13.9), though it’s not yet widely available. In recent updates, Gboard also introduced handwriting recognition for tablets and foldable phones. Additionally, the AI-powered Gboard Smart Reply is now compatible with two more messaging apps.
