WhatsApp, the popular global messaging app, is taking your privacy seriously with a new feature currently in beta testing. This update aims to prevent unauthorized contacts from taking screenshots of your profile picture. According to WABetaInfo, the new screenshot blocking feature is currently available to select beta testers on version 2.24.4.25 of the Android app and will be rolled out more broadly in the coming weeks. With the changes implemented, when someone attempts to screenshot a contact’s profile picture, a black screen will appear with a notification that reads: “Can’t take a screenshot due to app restrictions.”

This update builds upon a change that WhatsApp implemented five years ago. The aim was to prevent unauthorized image downloads by removing the ability to save other users’ profile photos directly. While well-intentioned, this didn’t stop people from simply screenshotting profile pictures, which still provided them with a way to save the image to their devices. WhatsApp’s new screenshot blocking feature tackles this directly.
 

It’s worth mentioning that determined users could still capture a profile picture using a secondary device. However, this new feature makes it significantly harder to casually share profile pictures, protecting user privacy.

Additionally, as this is currently only available in beta and might take some time to reach all users, it is important to know that there are other options available today to protect your privacy within the app. Currently, you can take small measures such as changing your profile photo privacy settings so that it could only be seen by whomever you choose. While this is also not foolproof, it is another way in which you could potentially discourage bad actors from violating your privacy and using your likeness for unauthorized purposes.

Google‘s Pixel Fold 2 has shown up in some new renders alongside a 5K CAD 360-degree video. There are a few takeaways but it’s important to note that these are just CAD renders and not official promotional images from Google. That being said, it does provide a good look at what the phone is probably going to look like. Based on the images and the 360-degree video, the Pixel Fold 2 is going to come with larger displays on both the inside and outside of the phone.

The images come from OnLeaks who has a good track record for leaking product designs. The CAD renders are also in collaboration with Smartprix, which details some of the phone’s specs too. Although nothing is official, Smartprix says the phone will come with a 6.4-inch outer display. This is about the same size as what was initially rumored when a render video leaked back on February 16. Although the size mentioned in that video was 6.5 inches. When it comes to the inner display that you interact with in the unfolded state, the phone is said to come with a display that measures 7.9 inches diagonally. These sizes are compared to the 5.8-inch outer display and 7.6-inch inner display of the original model.

It’s important to note that the overall design of this phone has leaked a couple of times before. In addition to the above-mentioned render video leak, an image of the phone leaked back on February 7 as well. Since that time, the design of the phone hasn’t changed. So today’s render video adds a little more weight to the fact that this is probably the final design.

Pixel Fold 2 renders reveal the phone’s triple camera setup

Yet another detail that Google seems to be shaking up is the rear camera setup. As seen in previous leaks, the Pixel Fold 2 is set to feature a triple rear camera setup. The main difference is that Google won’t use the longer, more narrow camera bar like on the original Fold. Instead, the company is replacing that with a rounded square-shaped camera island that holds three camera sensors, the LED flash, and one or two more sensors that could be for “focusing” according to Smartprix.

It also looks like the selfie camera in the unfolded state is now an in-display hole-punch-style camera instead of being placed in the bezels. And that would largely be due to the much smaller bezels of this new design. The hinge is getting an update too and appears slightly more flat when the phone is folded up.

The leak doesn’t talk much about internal hardware specs, but it’s already been rumored that Google will be using the Tensor G4 chip for this upcoming device, along with an upgrade to 16GB of RAM.

Samsung plans to expand Galaxy AI beyond smartphones. The company says it is optimizing its AI (Artificial Intelligence) features for more device categories, including wearables. The Korean firm aims to use AI to bring intelligent health experiences to its smartwatches and other wearable products.

Samsung’s Galaxy AI will be available for wearables

Galaxy AI is a suite of AI features that Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S24 series. The company has built AI all over the devices. The new flagships use AI to translate and transcribe calls in real-time, rephrase your messages according to the specified tone, move or remove objects from photos, improve the camera output, add frames between those recorded by the camera to create slow-motion videos, organize and summarize notes, and more.

Samsung says it is just getting started. “While developing the Galaxy S24 series, we had many ideas and concepts that we wanted to bring to life. Galaxy users will be able to enjoy more Galaxy AI features that build on these ideas and concepts over time as Samsung continuously enhances and grows the mobile AI experience,” TM Roh, the company’s head of mobile business, said in a recent editorial on the Samsung Newsroom.

Roh said, “Galaxy wearables will use AI to enhance digital health and unlock a whole new era of expanded intelligent health experiences.” This expansion of Galaxy AI to wearables will begin soon, with select models picking it up first. It is unclear whether Samsung will bring AI features to existing Galaxy Watches or start with the Galaxy Watch 7 series later this year. The new watches will debut alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 in July or August.

The Galaxy Ring, Samsung’s first smart ring, is also expected to arrive at the same event. The company aims the ring at people who aren’t comfortable wearing a watch all the time. It will offer the same set of health features in a much smaller form factor and complement Galaxy Watches. The upcoming smart ring will reportedly be available in eight different sizes. It may also boast some AI-powered health features.

Older Samsung phones will also get the new AI features

Samsung plans to push Galaxy AI to over 100 million Galaxy devices this year. Before wearables, it may roll out the new AI features to older Galaxy smartphones. All flagship models launched since 2021 (Galaxy S21 and newer) and recent premium mid-range devices such as the Galaxy A54 will get Galaxy AI. Text formatting is rolling out to all WhatsApp users starting today.

Once the feature rolls out to everyone, you can head to Settings > Profile and create a username for you. Next up, you can also create a QR code or link that directs others to you in the app. Take note, others can also type your username into the chat bar and shoot a message.

Signal explains that the username you choose isn’t permanent and won’t be seen by the people you’re chatting with. It’s important to understand that your username isn’t the same as the name others see in chats; instead, it’s a convenient way to start a conversation without giving out your phone number.

You’ll (still) need a phone number

Signal usernames differ from account names on other platforms because they don’t serve as login credentials. Instead, they offer a way for people to connect with you quickly without needing your phone number. You still need a phone number to sign up for the app, but you can choose whether to share it or not.

Additionally, Signal will automatically hide your phone number by default for users who haven’t saved it in their phone contacts. You can adjust this setting by going to your privacy settings and selecting “Who can see my number.”

These features will soon make it to the stable version of Signal.

It seems like everyday, Google’s Gemini is taking a step closer to being a replacement for Google Assistant. Today, Google’s most advanced AI model has just taken another step forward. According to sources, Gemini now has the ability to create reminders using Google Tasks.

Right now, you can use the Gemini app on your phone, and it could also be used as a light assistant. You can set it as your default assistant, and summon it when you need quick help. Because of this, it feels less likely that Google Assistant will be a mainstay in Android for much longer. Since it’s powered by generative AI, Gemini can be much more helpful when it comes to gathering information. However, Google has not publicly expressed any plans to replace Google Assistant with Gemini. We’re just going to have to wait.

You can use Gemini to make reminders in Google Tasks

Right now, Google is working long and hard to make Gemini a useful assistant on your phone. Many of the assistant tasks are missing from Gemini, so the experience feels a bit fragmented. One of the features missing was the ability to create reminders using Google Tasks. However, according to a new report, Google has finally brought this functionality.

If you summon Gemini Advanced and ask it to remind you to do something, the chatbot will tap Google Assistant to set up a task for you through Google Tasks. It will then make the task for you and set it at the proper date and time. So, if you’ve gone all in with Gemini on your phone, you know that you have the ability to set reminders again.

At this point, this feature is still rolling out. There’s still a chance that you could get an error message or a fake acknowledgment that Google has set the reminder. This is what happened to us at Android Headlines from trying to use this feature. However, the folks at 9To5Google have been able to see this feature in action. So, it all depends on when the feature makes it to you. Just make sure that you have the Google Tasks app installed on your phone.

The model is said to be able to analyze and explain data, as well as write high-quality code in many programming languages. All of this will now compliment your experience in Workspace apps, without having to switch apps or tabs.

Google also wants you to know that, as outlined in its AI data privacy principles, Gemini in Google Workspace does not use your personal and/or business information to train or improve its AI models without your permission. This is important to note in this age of AI where the lines of where privacy begins and ends can sometimes become very blurry.
