Vibrator virus steals your personal information

0
[ad_1]

I know that some of you are expecting a post similar to that about a toothbrush botnet, but this is not a hypothetical case. It actually happened.

A Malwarebytes Premium customer started a thread on Reddit saying we had blocked malware from trying to infect their computer after they connected a vibrator to a USB port in order to charge the device.

The vibrator, Spencer’s Sexology Pussy Power 8-Function Rechargeable Bullet Vibrator, was infected with an information stealer known as Lumma.

Lumma is available through a Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS) model, where cybercriminals pay other cybercriminals for access to malicious software and its related infrastructure. Lumma steals information from cryptocurrency wallets and browser extensions, as well as two-factor authentication details. Lumma is often distributed via email campaigns, but nothing stops the cybercriminals from spreading it through infected USB drives, as is the case here.

The question that remains is, how did the vibrator get infected? The victim bought the vibrator at Spencer’s, so we reached out to the company in an attempt to get to the bottom of this.

Spencer’s acknowledged that it was aware of the problem, but the team investigating the issue was unable to provide further information at this point. We’ll keep you updated if we receive word from them or find out any more information ourselves.

Our advice when it comes to USB devices, including rechargeable vibrators:

  • Don’t connect the USB to your computer for charging. If you use a good old-fashioned AC plug socket then no data transfer can take place while you charge.
  • If you still want the option to connect via USB, USB condoms or “juice-jack defenders” as they are sometimes called will prevent accidental data exchange when your device is plugged into another device with a USB cable.
  • Treat untrusted devices like you would the “lost USB stick” in the parking lot. You know you shouldn’t connect those to your computer, right?
  • Always use security software. In this case, the customer was protected by Malwarebytes Premium. If they weren’t using security software, their personal information might have ended up in the hands of cybercriminals.

Technical details

The customer was kind enough to provide us with the content of the flash drive. On it were a host of XML files and a Microsoft Software Installer file (Mia_Khalifa 18+.msi).

The XML files all look very similar to the above and seem to be designed to functions as an XML bomb. An XML bomb is an exponential entity expansion attack, similar to a ZIP bomb, that is designed to crash the web application. This is likely used to draw the attention of the victim away from the actual malware.

The installer creates a program entry called Outweep Dynes.

The Outweep Dynes “program” is yet another installer dropped in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Outweep Dynes\InstallerPlus_v3e.5m.exe

To hinder reverse engineering, extraction of the executable is password protected. But with the password hardcoded in the file, that was not a problem.

Russian prompt to enter password for the executable

The file then executes a heavily obfuscated portable executable detected by Malwarebytes as Trojan.Crypt.MSIL which is Malwarebytes’ generic detection name for a type of obfuscated Trojan programmed in Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL).

The dropped executable is a combination of the Lumma Stealer and an additional .NET dll library.

Malwarebytes ThreatDown customers enjoy protection by Advanced Device Control. When a USB device is connected, ThreatDown now doesn’t just control access—it actively scans it. You can also now choose to block the device until the system scans it. This means threats are stopped in their tracks, well before they can do any harm.

WhatsApp’s favorite contact feature was spotted in the Android beta

0
[ad_1]

Not too long ago, a new feature was spotted in the WhatsApp iOS beta which would allow people to assign favorite contacts. Well, it appears that iPhone users can’t hog all of the fun. According to a report, the WhatsApp favorite contacts feature was spotted in the Android beta as well.

Usually, WhatsApp tests its new features both for iOS and Android separately. Sometimes, the company will test features on Android and not on iOS, and vice versa. The favorite contacts feature was first spotted on the iOS beta not too long ago. This is a feature that will allow people to assign a certain number of contacts as favorites so that they can quickly access and call them from the Calls tab.

This eliminates the need to navigate through the app in order to find that special someone. At this point, we have no idea when WhatsApp plans to release this feature. We will just have to keep an eye out for new developments.

The WhatsApp favorite contacts feature was spotted in the Android beta

The favorite contacts feature was discovered in the beta version of the IOS app (version 24.310.70). If you have that version, there’s a chance that you will see the feature, but it’s not a guarantee. If you’re on the Android side of the track, then there’s a chance you’ll find the feature in version 2.24.5.5 of the Android beta.

In the screenshot below, we see a list of contacts in the search results. Up top, we see the text “Favorites appear on your calls tab so a phone call is only a tap away.” Think of it as speed dial for WhatsApp. All you have to do is access your call tab and tap on the contact you want to call. The app will place that call quickly.

At this point, it appears that the feature is pretty well into production, so hopefully, there won’t be much time to wait. If you are a part of the WhatsApp Android beta, make sure that your app is fully updated.

Oppo is bringing generative AI tools to its Reno series of phones

0
[ad_1]

It should be obvious by now that pretty much every company is going all in on AI. Companies like Google have been focusing on it for years, but since the whole generative AI boom, all notable tech brands have been working on the technology. Now, Oppo is going all in on generative AI, and it’s going to bring some powerful tools to its Reno series later this year.

Oppo is a major Chinese tech firm, and it’s joined at the hip with OnePlus. In fact, OnePlus’ co-founder, Pete Lau, is the chief product officer of Oppo. The company has its popular Find N series of foldables. It also sells its Find X and Reno series of phones.

Oppo is going to bring generative AI tools to its Reno phones later this year

So far, we’ve already seen some of the impressive things that phones can do with on-device AI. We’ve seen the Pixel 8 Pro (Review) use some powerful generative AI tools. However, it’s really the Galaxy S24 series of phones that showcase some impressive on-device generative AI. Samsung announced Galaxy AI, and the company unveiled a bunch of AI features that are all done right on the device like text generation and translation.

Now, Oppo is looking to do much the same. According to the company, it has established a large R&D Center for AI research. The center will help research and develop powerful AI tools for Oppo’s products. Since Oppo and OnePlus are so closely integrated, we won’t be surprised if some of these tools make it to future OnePlus devices as well.

Oppo developed its own AI model called AndesGPT. The company plans on releasing some new AI tools to its Reno devices in the second half of the year. We’re not quite sure how many tools are coming or what they’re going to be. However, the company did mention that the intelligent object removal in photos and phone conversation summary will be making it to these phones later this year. These tools first landed on the Oppo Find X7.

This shows Oppo’s commitment to AI

It looks like Oppo is the next company to really hammer down on its AI capabilities. The company outlined four major defensive characteristics of AI smartphones:

-AI Smartphones must efficiently utilize computing resources to meet the computational needs of generative AI in the AI era.

– AI Smartphones should be aware of the real world in time through sensors, understanding the complex information of users and the environment.

– AI Smartphones also need to possess powerful self-learning capabilities.

– AI Smartphones will have multimodal content generation abilities, providing users with continuous inspiration and knowledge support.

So, the company is going to use these for its future AI phones going forward.

New Mingo Malware Attacking Linux Redis Servers

0
[ad_1]

The malware, termed Migo by the creators, attempts to infiltrate Redis servers to mine cryptocurrency on the Linux host.

The campaign employed many Redis system-weakening commands to potentially disable data store security features that could hinder their initial attempts at access.

Additionally, the campaign uses these commands to carry out a cryptojacking attack on Redis.

Redis, “Remote Dictionary Server,” is an open-source, NoSQL key/value store that runs entirely in memory and is mostly utilized as a quick-response database or application cache.

Redis offers unmatched speed, dependability, and performance since it keeps data in memory rather than on a disk or solid-state drive (SSD).

System Weakening Techniques

When a peculiar set of commands directed at a Redis honeypot was noticed, Cado researchers were initially made aware of the Migo campaign.

Document

Using the Redis command line interface’s (CLI) config set feature, attackers disabled the following configuration options.

  • set protected-mode
  • replica-read-only
  • aof-rewrite-incremental-fsync
  • rdb-save-incremental-fsync

The Redis server has an operational mode called “protected mode” that is intended to mitigate the risk of users unintentionally exposing the server to external networks.

It’s possible that this option was turned off during the initial access phase to enable the attackers to send more commands to the Redis server via the Internet.

Disable protected mode command

The replica-read-only feature instructs Redis replicas (perfect copies of a master Redis instance) to refuse any written commands.

The Migo attackers are probably disabling this feature to make it easier to exploit the Redis server in the future.

Meanwhile, append-only file rewrites may experience increased IO demand if aof-rewrite-incremental-fsync is disabled.

During RDB snapshot saves, performance may suffer if rdb-save-incremental-fsync is disabled.

“After disabling these configuration parameters, the attacker uses the set command to set the values of two Redis keys”.

One key is assigned a string value corresponding to a malicious attacker-controlled SSH key, and the other to a Cron job that retrieves the malicious primary payload from Transfer.sh via Pastebin”, Cado researchers shared with GBhackers on Security.

Abusing the set command to register a malicious Cron job

Compiled from Go code for the x86_64 architecture, the Migo primary payload (/tmp/.migo) is provided as a statically linked and stripped UPX-packed ELF.

Migo retrieves the XMRig installer in tar.gz format directly from Github’s CDN.

The malware then queries several system parameters, such as the number of logged-in users (via the w binary) and user resource restrictions, after the miner has been installed and an XMRig configuration set has been specified.

Cryptojacking malware typically behaves in these ways.

Researchers say that the main payload of Migo is a compiled binary created with Go instead of a string of shell scripts, as was the case in earlier campaigns, showing that the individuals behind Migo are still refining their methods and making the analysis process more difficult.

Why Front-End Development Matters for Online Businesses?

0
[ad_1]

Front-end development, sometimes called client-side development, creates CSS, HTML, and JavaScript for online apps and sites so users can interact and view. Front-end developers must understand how the field is changing since they employ different methods and technologies to modify the website’s front end. Site development aims to make customers comprehend the significance when they visit.

The front end goes beyond programming. It involves customer-facing code. A good front-end developer should understand web performance and web success metrics. He needs to refine the layout of the project and optimize DNS lookup time, HTTP caching, CSS, and script minification. Frontend web developers should also understand marketing. Has to know the psychology of consumers, prioritizing usability and accessibility as well as SEO.

A great company needs a clean, effective, and stunning website to attract and retain customers. Front End development is vital to website development. If development is inappropriate, it will seem bad and push companies away. Business goals, branding, and customer support must be considered in website style and development. You must study front-end development and face obstacles to obtain experience.

Front-end programming is crucial for any project. End-users want contemporary, sturdy, intuitive, and user-friendly software. Development, UI, analytics, and customer happiness create a seamless experience.

The First Impression

In this fast-growing digital world, company websites are clients’ first impressions. Programmers must consider it while planning a front-end development approach. It should display the company brand, as well as appeal to clients. This reflects the company’s brand image.

The purpose of a business is to emphasize relevant and user-friendly data. Customers shouldn’t be confused by website visuals and design. It should quickly meet client needs and work. JavaScript, HTML, and other programming technologies are essential for market communication.

Effective branding involves considering logos, designs, goods, and other key elements while developing a website. Providing a good branded front requires Front End Development. Targeting the business environment should reveal the company’s profile and goals. Any company site needs trademarks and branding icons.

Increase Trust and Confidence

Customers lose confidence when they face occasional browsing errors. When consumer trust is shattered, the firm loses customers. A clean and well-planned web layout with outstanding visuals may attract and retain customers.

Design is front-end development’s future

Front-end designers were commodities not long ago. The work was simple—drafting on paper. The 2-dimensional screen was used for painting and developers inserting pixels. Custom-coding Front-End developers carried the load.

Instead of merely painting, front-end developers must think like video producers, dealing with motion, CSS3, HTML5, responsive design, and interactivity. The concentration on this technology has clouded design and development.

Demand for front-end developers will continue, but in a new pattern where you simply engulf items.

Client-specific design requirement

Interacting with clients helps you understand their needs. To create a design, clients must inform the designer about their items. Instead of using trendy or parallax effects to wow visitors for 30 seconds, you should be clear about their product, how they would service them, etc. Going through the design step with customers is recommended since it clarifies their thinking and enhances the message. Your site’s features should demonstrate values.

Do you need software modernization services? Hire a company that specializes in providing advanced software modernization services to help businesses improve their competitive advantage.

In the previous five years, responsive design has transformed design and theming. Flash-based interactive components were inconsistent and unsupported. Quickly, responsive webpages that supported all browsers and platforms became popular. They smartly sought compliance. Finally, designing won.

The integration of web development and design with marketing is poised for growth. With solid information, websites can better appeal to customers. Developers need to create engaging virtual storytellers, while design plays a pivotal role in conveying narratives and driving sales.

Personalization in search engines remains limited. Core technologies and front-end development are diverging further. Teams are now leveraging prototype platforms and collaborative tools instead of relying solely on Photoshop. Numerous tools are available to support modern product development.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 & Flip 6 cross regulatory hurdle on the way to launch

0
[ad_1]

Samsung will launch its sixth-gen foldable smartphones in a few months. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are expected to go official at the end of July. The company has already started obtaining regulatory approvals for the devices, or at least the components. Last week, the upcoming foldables had their batteries certified by a couple of regulatory agencies. The batteries for both models have appeared in a regulatory database again.

Galaxy Z Fold 6 & Flip 6 batteries certified

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 picked up its first certification from the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards). The Indian regulatory agency approved its batteries with model numbers EB-BF742ABE and EB-BF742ABY, which are in line with the device’s model number, SM-F741. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 (SM-F956) followed a couple of days later with its first certification from Safety Korea with the model number EB-BF957ABY L.

The BIS has now certified more battery packs for the upcoming foldable duo. 91Mobiles spotted two additional battery certifications for each. The Flip 6’s batteries bear model numbers EB-BF741ABE and EB-BF741ABY, while those for the Fold’s 6 batteries are EB-BF956ABE and EB-BF956ABY. The varying identifiers likely indicate different manufacturers of the batteries. Samsung usually does that, sourcing batteries for its devices from various firms.

Unfortunately, we don’t have additional details. There are rumors that the new foldables will get bigger batteries than their predecessors. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is said to feature batteries with rated capacities of 1097mAh and 2790mAh for a total rated capacity of 3887mAh. That’s notably larger than the Flip 5’s 3591mAh battery (971mAh + 2620mAh). The advertised typical battery capacity could be 4,000mAh. It is 3,700mAh for the Flip 5.

The figures for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 are still a mystery. It is unclear if the bigger foldable will get a similar battery upgrade. There are chances that Samsung will keep the battery capacity unchanged at 4,400mAh and focus on making the device thinner. The new foldable will also be squarer than the Fold 5, making the cover screen wider. We expect early renders of the duo to show up in leaks soon.

Samsung may also reduce the display crease

A wider cover screen will address one of the biggest complaints with Samsung’s Fold-series devices. The other major complaint is the display crease. The Korean firm may be working on reducing the crease with its sixth-gen foldables. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 will also arrive with newer processors and the latest version of One UI. The camera setup may remain unchanged on both models. Stick around for more leaks and rumors.

A first analysis of the i-Soon data leak

0
[ad_1]

Data from a Chinese cybersecurity vendor that works for the Chinese government has exposed a range of hacking tools and services. Although the source is not entirely clear, it seems that a disgruntled staff member of the group leaked the information on purpose.

The vendor, i-Soon (aka Anxun) is believed to be a private contractor that operates as an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT)-for-hire, servicing China’s Ministry of Public Security (MPS).

The leaked data is organized in a few groups, such as complaints about the company, chat records, financial information, products, employee information, and details about foreign infiltration. According to the leaked data, i-Soon infiltrated several government departments, including those from India, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, and NATO.

Some of the tools that i-Soon used are impressive enough. Some highlights:

  • Twitter (now X) stealer: Features include obtaining the user’s Twitter email and phone number, real-time monitoring, reading personal messages, and publishing tweets on the user’s behalf.
  • Custom Remote Access Trojans (RATs) for Windows x64/x86: Features include process/service/registry management, remote shell, keylogging, file access logging, obtaining system information, disconnecting remotely, and uninstallation.
  • The iOS version of the RAT also claims to authorize and support all iOS device versions without jailbreaking, with features ranging from hardware information, GPS data, contacts, media files, and real-time audio records as an extension. (Note: this part dates back to 2020)
  • The Android version can dump messages from all popular Chinese chatting apps QQ, WeChat, Telegram, and MoMo and is capable of elevating the system app for persistence against internal recovery.
  • Portable devices for attacking networks from the inside.
  • Special equipment for operatives working abroad to establish safe communication.
  • User lookup database which lists user data including phone number, name, and email, and can be correlated with social media accounts.
  • Targeted automatic penetration testing scenario framework.

While some of the information is dated, the leaked data provide an inside look in the operations that go on in a leading spyware vendor and APT-for-hire.

It will certainly rattle some cages at the infiltrated entities and as such it could possibly cause a shift in international diplomacy and expose the holes in the national security of several countries.

Apple snatches European market lead from Samsung

0
[ad_1]

In terms of smartphone sales in Europe, Apple has topped Samsung for the first time in almost two years. For Apple, which has been lagging behind Samsung in the European market for some time, this is a huge turning point. Let’s examine the ramifications for the two tech behemoths and the smartphone market at large.

In the fourth quarter of last year, sales of Samsung smartphones in Europe decreased by 12%. Whereas the sales of iPhones managed to surpass the market. As a result, for the first time in over two years, Apple surpassed Samsung in smartphone exports to Europe.

Industry research firm Canalys reported that Apple managed to eke out a 1% gain, although the European smartphone industry as a whole fell by 3% year over year, with Samsung suffering a far worse blow.

The rise of Apple

According to the most recent analysis from Canalys, smartphone shipments into Europe (except from Russia) decreased by 3% year over year in Q4 2023 to 37.8 million units. After trailing Samsung for seven quarters, Apple regained its top spot in the rankings, increasing 1% annually to reach 12.4 million devices. Furthermore, Samsung shipped 10.8 million devices as the second-place finisher, with a decrease in shipments compared to previous periods. However, consistent shipments of S-series and mid-range A-series devices offset this decrease in sales.

In Q4 2023, premium range smartphones captured a record proportion of the European market. Runar Bjørhovde, a Canalys analyst, reported that 40% of smartphone sales were priced at US$800 or above. “The robust demand for the iPhone 15 Pro, together with steady Galaxy S-series production volumes and a growing Google Pixel, was the primary driver of the high-end’s supremacy.

Canalys believes that this year will see a resurgence of growth in the European smartphone industry because we are currently in the normal upgrade window for handsets purchased during the pandemic.

Challenges faced by Samsung

Despite having dominated the smartphone industry for a long time, Samsung has had difficulties recently, especially in Europe. The growing competition from Chinese companies like Xiaomi, OPPO, and Huawei, who provide premium smartphones at cheaper price points, has been one of Samsung’s main problems. These companies’ quick market share growth in Europe is forcing Samsung to step up its game.

Additionally, a lot of customers believe that Samsung has been playing it safe rather than pushing the frontiers of technology, and the corporation has come under fire for its lack of innovation in recent smartphone models. Customers’ interest in Samsung products has decreased as a result, allowing Apple to swoop in and take a bigger chunk of the market.

The future of the smartphone industry

The change in Apple and Samsung’s market shares in Europe is a sign of more general changes in the smartphone sector. To remain ahead of the curve, IT businesses will need to continuously innovate as the market becomes more competitive and customer preferences change. Apple’s return to the top of the European market indicates that its emphasis on design, innovation, and user experience has paid off and given it a competitive edge over its rivals.

As time goes on, it will be interesting to see how Samsung handles Apple’s competition and whether it can return to its past success in the European market. Fierce competition in the market will bring about disruptions and changes in market dynamics as new smartphone models launch in the smartphone sector.
