Titanium didn’t help the Galaxy S24 Ultra lose weight

0
[ad_1]

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is the very first smartphone from the company to use titanium. The phone comes with a titanium frame, just like the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The thing is, unlike the two iPhones, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is not any lighter because of it.

Titanium didn’t help the Galaxy S24 Ultra lose weight, and that’s perfectly normal

The Galaxy S24 Ultra weighs 232 grams, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra weighs 234 grams. The difference here is only 2 grams, which is basically not noticeable. For comparison’s sake, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max weigh 187 grams and 221 grams, while their predecessors weigh 206 grams and 240 grams. That’s a considerable difference right there.

The battery is also the same in regards to the capacity, so… what’s the gist? Well, you have to keep in mind that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max used stainless steel instead of aluminum for its frame. The Galaxy S23 Ultra uses aluminum and a lighter version of aluminum at that.

So, the jump from already light aluminum to titanium is apparently not as considerable as some of you thought. A jump from stainless steel to titanium, however, sure is. I hope this clears it up, as some people seemed a bit disappointed by the Galaxy S24 Ultra weight.

The company announced its new flagship smartphone series a couple of days ago

As many of you know, Samsung announced three smartphones a couple of days ago, and one of them was the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ also arrived. Those two phones kept the aluminum build, however. They’re very similar to their predecessors when it comes to weight as well.

All three phones are fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy in the US. In Europe, however, the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ come equipped with the Exynos 2400 instead.

All three phones have a matte glass finish on the back, and all three have seen slight design changes. The frame is completely flat on the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. The two phones also have slightly thinner bezels and slightly larger displays. The Galaxy S24 Ultra, on the other hand, now has a flat display, and its top and bottom sides are entirely flat.

Older Verizon Unlimited plans are getting a $4 price hike starting March

[ad_1]

Pricing for some older Verizon Unlimited plans will jump up soon. According to CNET, the operator will be hiking the price of select older Unlimited Plans by $4/month per line. The company is allegedly increasing the pricing to push its customers to opt for the newer unlimited plans. These plans were originally added to the Verizon myPlan lineup in 2023.

Verizon is increasing the pricing of older Unlimited plans to get its users to switch to newer packs

As per the source, the telecom operator is trying to get its customers to switch to the newer Unlimited packs. Soon, the monthly cost of the 5G Get More, 5G Play More, 5G Do More, and 5G Start will be increased. A company spokesperson notes that the price of any of the newer Unlimited packs will “remain the same”.

The effective hike will be $4/month per line, starting from March 1st, 2024. So, the consumers still have more than a month to decide their next Unlimited plan, in case they plan to switch.

Verizon’s new Unlimited packs won’t come with included streaming services

The brand’s unlimited plans include the Unlimited Ultimate, Unlimited Plus, and Unlimited Welcome plans. These packs don’t come with bundles for streaming services or international data roaming days. The consumers have the choice to purchase a $10 add-on for the streaming service they like. These current tariffs are available at the starting cost of $30/month per line.

Verizon Myplan Unlimited

In the statement, the brand spokesperson said that with the new plans, the users “can easily move to myPlan and take advantage of the network option that works best for them, plus exclusive savings on the entertainment, shopping and experiences that matter to them, including Disney Plus, Apple One, Netflix, Max, Walmart and many others.”

Notably, AT&T also recently announced that it is raising the cost of its Unlimited packs by $0.99 per line. These packs include the Unlimited Starter, Unlimited Extra, and Unlimited Premium. It’s worth mentioning that the brand is compensating the users for the hike with extra hotspot data with these packs.

The company has already started notifying its existing consumers that the pricing of these packs will increase from March 5th. After the hike, the AT&T Unlimited packs will be available from $65.99/month for the base pack.

Google’s AI chatbot Bard to arrive on Google Messages

0
[ad_1]

In the AI scene, Google plays a leading role with its advancements, like the upcoming AI-boosted Assistant with Bard. This new and improved Assistant is poised to take over from the current one on supported Android devices. And you know what? Google’s chatbot Bard might just be expanding its turf to even more applications.According to info spilled from tipster and code detective Assemble Debug (via Android Authority), it seems Bard is gearing up for action in Google Messages. The scoop is that Bard was spotted in the beta version 20240111_04_RC00 of the Messages app. Looks like users might soon start RCS chats with Bard right in Google Messages and even add Bard to group chats with other users. The shared screenshots show that Bard can help users write messages, translate languages, identify images, and delve into various interests. The chatbot studies your location and past chats to write better answers. Just a heads up, though: Google’s warning that Bard might not always hit the accuracy mark, so it’s wise to give its responses a double-check.Adding to the scoop, lines of code dug up in the beta spill the beans that you gotta be 18 to dive into the Bard experience in Google Messages. And there’s a twist: unlike your regular RCS chats, the chats you have with Bard won’t be wrapped up in end-to-end encryption. Also, Google lays it out straight, mentioning that Bard chats and the related data are set to stick around for 18 months.

What is more, Google emphasizes a crucial point: you should avoid sharing messages with Bard that you wouldn’t want a reviewer or Google to access. The description specifies that while reviewed data is detached from the user’s account, it remains stored for up to three years.

However, Google’s throwing in an option to turn off, manage, and delete your Bard Activity. If you decide to flip the Bard Activity switch off, your chats will only be saved for a short 72 hours.

As of now, the feature still does not work on Google Messages. Traces that Bard is coming to the messaging app were discovered almost a year ago, and now it appears that its integration is finally nearing completion.

Critical “PixieFail” Flaws Expose Millions of Devices to Cyberattacks

0
[ad_1]

The vulnerabilities, collectively called PixieFAIL, were discovered in the network stack of EDK II, during a cursory inspection of NetworkPkg and could be exploited during the network boot process.

Quarkslab bug hunters discovered nine serious vulnerabilities in EDK II, the de-facto open-source reference implementation of the UEFI specification, which could lead to remote code execution (RCE) attacks before booting the device.

These flaws, discovered in August 2023, led to DNS and DHCP poisoning attacks, information leakage, denial of service, and data insertion attacks at the IPv4 and IPv6 layers.

The vulnerabilities, collectively called PixieFAIL, were discovered in the network stack of EDK II, during a cursory inspection of NetworkPkg and could be exploited during the network boot process.

Network boot is a common feature on enterprise computers/servers, used to load an OS image from the network at boot time. This is popular in data centers and high-performance computing environments. Given that server farms and clusters often have hundreds or thousands of compute nodes, it simplifies management by downloading and running the OS from a central set of servers.

For your information, the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE), netboot, or Pixie boot, specifies a standardized client-server solution for network computers’ booting. It was introduced by Intel in 1998 and later got incorporated into the UEFI specification. With the release of UEFI version 2.2 in 2010, IPv6-based PXE became a part of the specification. The code to PXE is included in the UEFI firmware on the motherboard or within the NIC firmware read-only memory.

EDK II is UEFI’s open-source implementation developed and maintained by Tianocore, a community of developers leveraging the project for their own UEFI implementations. It incorporates NetworkPkg, a TCP/IP stack, to enable network functionalities during the initial PXE stage, allowing remote configuration and booting of networked computers.

According to Quarkslab’s blog post, all nine issues were discovered in the TianoCore EFI Development Kit II (EDK II) and affect UEFI firmware from AMI, Intel, Insyde, and Phoenix Technologies. Threat actors can exploit them for remote code execution, denial-of-service, DNS cache poisoning, and leakage of sensitive information. The vulnerabilities’ details are as follows:

CVE-2023-45229 (CVSS rating 6.5) and CVE-2023-45230 (CVSS rating 8.3) are vulnerabilities in DHCPv6 that cause integer underflow and buffer overflow in the DHCPv6 client.

CVE-2023-45231 (CVSS rating 6.5) and CVE-2023-45232 (CVSS rating 7.5) are vulnerabilities in a DHCPv6 Advertise message, causing out-of-bounds reads and infinite loops when parsing unknown or PadN options.

CVE-2023-45233 (CVSS rating 7.5) and CVE-2023-45234 (CVSS rating 8.3) are vulnerabilities in a DHCPv6 Advertise message causing an infinite loop when parsing a PadN option in the Destination Options header and the other affecting the processing of DNS Servers and Server ID options.

CVE-2023-45235 and CVE-2023-45236 are vulnerabilities affecting DHCPv6 proxy Advertise messages, with CVSS scores of 8.3 and 5.8, respectively, causing buffer overflow and predictable TCP initial sequence numbers. The ninth flaw is CVE-2023-45237 with a CVSS score of 5.3 and is related to a weakness in the pseudorandom number generator.

The list of vulnerabilities in EDK II devices is extensive, with the most severe being buffer overflow vulnerabilities for encouraging arbitrary code execution, potentially allowing attackers initial access and lateral movement.

Quarkslab contacted impacted software vendors to address the issue. Over half a year, they worked together to develop a patch without leaking any information. On January 16, 2024, a patch for fixing PixieFAIL at once was released with a firmware update.

The company has released proof-of-concept code for the first seven vulnerabilities, enabling defenders to detect infection attempts. The CERT Coordination Center has identified Insyde, AMI, Intel, and Phoenix Technologies as affected and published guidelines to deploy the fixes.

Scammers Rake in $600K with Deepfakes and QR Codes

0
[ad_1]

Hijacked accounts, hollow promises: Stream-jacked channels lure viewers with fake Bitcoin giveaways by utilizing deepfakes of popular celebrities, including Elon Musk, Ripple’s CEO Brad Garlinghouse, and Michael J. Saylor, former managing director of MicroStrategy, among many others.

Cybersecurity researchers at Bitdefender have published their latest research, highlighting a growing trend of YouTube stream-jacking campaigns using deepfake videos for cryptocurrency theft. The latest report continues the company’s research on YouTube-related malicious scams published in October 2023.

Despite companies like McAfee launching tools such as MockingBird, designed to detect 90% of deepfake content, scammers persist in employing malicious techniques to execute crypto scams. In some instances, they have managed to successfully bypass facial recognition systems, highlighting the ongoing challenges in combating these deceptive practices.

Stream-Jacking

For your information, YouTube stream-jacking is a cybercrime where criminals steal accounts from popular channels using livestream pop-ups, QR codes, and malicious links. Crypto-doubling scams lure viewers into depositing their cryptocurrency into platforms, promising quick returns. Victims are lured into depositing their funds, only to find their funds disappear without a trace.

As of the first week of January 2024, there were 2.70 billion active users on YouTube. These staggering stats make the video hosting platform a lucrative target for cybercriminals and scammers.

According to Bitdefender’s research, cybercriminals are enhancing their stream-jacking attacks by creating content that mimics legitimate cryptocurrency news or announcements.

Stream-jacking 2.0 scams target popular channels for account takeover or lure followers to mimic channels with rewards. During their research, the researchers discovered that the top three highjacked accounts to carry these scams have over 31 million subscribers, with Tesla, MicroStrategy, and SpaceX being the top brands used. Bitdefender estimates that cyber criminals have netted over $600K so far.

Fake YouTube Channels, Real Verification!

Bitdefender’s blog post suggests that scammers use multiple announcements and high-profile news headlines to make their scams appear credible. For instance, attackers used the “SpaceX Starship integrated flight test 2” official event to launch fake livestreams under “SpaceX Launch Starship Flight Test! Elon Musk gives update on Starship!” on compromised channels.

Deepfake content helps scammers spread fraudulent schemes on compromised channels, using cryptocurrency-related videos of famous personalities, popular conference talks, and recordings. They encourage viewers to scan a QR code and send a certain amount of crypto to be doubled. Some deep fakes are of decent quality, but the live chat section is disabled unless a selected member or subscriber has been a long-term subscriber.

There is also a rising trend of using Deepfakes in YouTube ads rather than livestreams, providing more opportunities for cybercriminals to spread scams. Account takeovers are usually enabled by compromising YouTube access tokens with stealers.

Malicious actors revamp the channel to impersonate the entity they want to impersonate, likely through automated processes. The revamping process involves changes to the channel name, handle, visibility, avatar, banner, description, links, featured channels, and anything that can help identify the original channel.

Bitdefender researchers have identified signs of artificial boosting of viewers in most livestreams. In December 2023, malicious actors began broadcasting scams targeting the Bitcoin ETF, focusing on MicroStrategy and Michael Saylor.

One such example is scammers broadcasting using looped deepfakes relying on MicroStrategy’s former CEO to participate in giveaways by scanning QR codes and following instructions. Compromised channels use variations of the official MicroStrategy logo, official banners, and playlists to boost credibility.

YouTube Crypto Con: Scammers Rake in $600K with Deepfakes and QR Codes
Deepfake YouTube ad featuring Ripple’s CEO Brad Garlinghouse – Deepfake powered livestream featuring Michael J. Saylor, former managing director of MicroStrategy giving away Bitcoin – Fake and verified SpaceX YouTube account with millions of subscribers.

The most common names after the takeover are MicroStrategy US, MicroStrategy, Microstrategy, Microstrategy US, Microstrategy Live, and Micro Strategy. Subsequently, deceptive websites began to surface, hosted on domains mimicking the company’s name or its former CEO, often incorporating symbols associated with cryptocurrencies and multipliers.

These fraudulent sites featured animated presentations showcasing multiple transactions, designed to create the illusion of live activity. It’s important to note that these animations were randomly generated and did not reflect actual transactions, serving as a misleading tactic to convey a false sense of legitimacy.

Protect Yourself from YouTube Crytp Scams!

Crypto scams on YouTube are a serious issue. In 2020, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak sued YouTube over Bitcoin scams using his name. Wozniak accused YouTube and Google of enabling Bitcoin giveaway scams by failing to take action against them.

To avoid becoming a victim of stream-Jacking 2.0, be cautious of unexpected changes in content, double-check links, avoid investing based on online endorsements, and thoroughly research investment opportunities.

Additionally, Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on YouTube accounts to prevent unauthorized access. Remember that if something seems too good to be true, it could be a scam. Don’t let a deepfake fool you into losing your crypto.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra will include an improved camera kit

0
[ad_1]

Along with the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, Xiaomi also presented a rather useful camera kit. That kit was sold separately, but quite a few people found it interesting, as it only boosted the phone’s camera aspect. Well, it seems like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra will also come with a camera kit, but an improved one.

The Xiaomi 14 Ultra camera kit got certified, it’ll be improved compared to the last iteration

That photography kit was certified by the CCC aka 3C agency in China. That certification reveals that the camera kit will include a battery on the inside. That is something the Xiaomi 13 Ultra’s camera kit did not offer.

The certification reveals that we’ll get a 1,500mAh battery with a maximum output of 5V. The device model that got certified is ‘2402CPS69C’, and it will ship without an adapter.

What is also interesting here is that the model number itself could indicate the launch date or timeframe. Based on what GSM Arena noticed, the first four digits are 2402, possibly pointing at February 2024 launch, or perhaps even February 24.

We’re basically expecting only one notable change compared to the Xiaomi 13 Ultra Photography Kit

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra Photography Kit includes a protective case that features a lens cap, a 67mm filter adapter, a camera grip with Bluetooth, and a lanyard.

If we had to guess, we’d say that the same thing would happen with this new camera kit, with the addition of a battery. Considering that a battery will be included, you can expect it to be a bit heavier. It could also cost more, though there’s a chance Xiaomi will aim to keep the same price tag.

The Xiaomi 13 Ultra’s Photography Kit was not cheap at all. It cost over $100. Well, the equivalent of that, as it was not sold globally. Your only option was to import it from China. Let’s hope that will change with the Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

Mark Zuckerberg wants to build Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

0
[ad_1]

Mark Zuckerberg is planning more AI as the focus of global tech majors shifts to artificial intelligence. He announced, via a post on Threads, that his company, Meta, is entering the race to develop an artificial general intelligence (AGI) system. Notably, Mark Zuckerberg is a key figure in the tech world, known for creating Facebook, the first widely used social media platform. It’s still in operation today and continues to be the most popular social media platform. That’s why, his words carry weight in the industry. And if he’s planning to create AGI, it’d be something discussed largely.

Mark Zuckerberg’s next mission is to build artificial general intelligence (AGI)

Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta’s ambitious plan to develop its advanced artificial intelligence, specifically aiming for AGI. Those wondering what’s that, it’s a type of artificial intelligence that can potentially surpass human intelligence in diverse domains.

Meta CEO further expressed Meta’s intention to not only leverage this advanced AI internally but also to make it available for external developers to use. Open source it. Zuckerberg explained further in a video on Threads. He said that if we want better computer programs like chatbots and tools for creators and businesses, we need to make an ingenious computer system. He believes that it’s time to create a kind of computer intelligence that can understand and do a lot of different things.

There’s no timeline, though

He briefly mentioned that this change is going to help the company speed up its research work. Eventually, this will make the metaverse – which is like a virtual space where people can interact – even better. One should note that there’s no fixed timeline. But, if we recall Meta’s Chief AI scientist’s previous remarks. Yann LeCun had previously said that AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is decades away.

To power this super-smart system, Zuckerberg mentioned they’re planning to use about 350,000 special computer chips. They also want to bring together their two big research groups, FAIR and GenAI, to work faster. By the end of the decade, Zuckerberg thinks that many people will use smart glasses (like the ones they’re making with Ray-Ban Meta) to interact with these super-smart computers.

Meanwhile, other tech majors like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are not lagging behind. However, some people are worried about the possible problems these super-smart computers could cause. And that’s something to keep an eye on.

Snapdragon & Exynos availability by country

As many of you know, Exynos SoC is back on Samsung’s flagships. Samsung announced its three new flagships a couple of days ago, and two of them come in Exynos variants, the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. In this article, we’ll break down which countries are selling Snapdragon Galaxy S24 variants, and which offer Exynos models.

Before we get down to that, do note that the Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy globally. Every country that offers the device comes in that variant, so that’s why we’ll focus on the other two phones.

The Galaxy S24 & S24+ ship in both Snapdragon and Exynos models, here’s their availability by country

That being said, the other two devices in question are the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. The Snapdragon variants of those two smartphones are available in the US, Canada, China, South Korea and Hong Kong.

If you get either of the two devices in Europe, the UK, India, Dubai, or any other region not mentioned about, you’ll find the Exynos 2400 on the inside. The Exynos makes a comeback after skipping the Galaxy S23 flagships entirely.

The Exynos 2400 is a powerful SoC, but people are skeptical due to previous generations

Based on the specs, the Exynos 2400 is a truly powerful processor, but people are skeptical based on its predecessors. Flagship Exynos chips have been trailing behind their Snapdragon counterparts for years.

The performance difference was truly noticeable with the Galaxy S22 series, for example. We do hope that the same won’t be the case this time around. We only got the chance to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 variants of the Galaxy S24 thus far.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Exynos 2400 do have rather different specs. Both should offer flagship-grade performance based on that, however. Let’s just hope that neither will get too hot, and/or throttle in the process.
