Yesterday, at the Galaxy S24 launch event, Samsung spent much time talking about Galaxy AI. It is a comprehensive suite of on-device and cloud-based AI features for Galaxy flagships. The company projected Galaxy AI as the biggest selling point of the devices. Tools like live translation for phone calls and circle to search certainly have the potential to elevate your smartphone user experience. But, as we revealed in our exclusive leak last week, all of this might come at a cost. Galaxy AI won’t be free for life.

You may have to pay to use Samsung’s Galaxy AI after two years

At Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung went into detail about all the new AI features that it has introduced with the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. It demonstrated how AI will enhance the way you use your phone. However, it never suggested that you will have to pay to use Galaxy AI. Unfortunately, that appears to be the truth. Not out of the box, but the company might start charging you for the new AI tools a couple of years later.

Samsung hinted at it in the footnotes of its official press release announcing the Galaxy S24 series in Australia. “Galaxy AI features will be provided free of charge until the end of 2025 on supported Samsung Galaxy devices,” the footnote reads. The same press release was also published in its other regional newsrooms, including Europe and the US. However, this specific footnote doesn’t exist on any of those. We could only find it in the Australian version.

While this is a little confusing, Samsung’s long-term plan might be to charge for some Galaxy AI features. We hope it doesn’t hide them all behind a paywall. That would be a terrible decision. It remains to be seen which features will need a subscription and what will be the cost. The Korean firm might not tell us more anytime soon, though. Its only aim right now is to sell as many Galaxy S24 units as possible without any controversy or issue. The phones are currently available for pre-order.

The new AI features will reach older models too

Samsung’s new AI features will also be available for older Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Galaxy Z Flip 5. Hardware constraints could limit the availability or functionality of some tools on certain models, but the company plans to make Galaxy AI available on over 100 million Galaxy devices in the first half of this year. We will let you know when the rollout begins.

After 12 years, Sheryl Sandberg is about to step down from her position on the Meta’s board of directors. Her term ends in May and she won’t run for a seat again (via Reuters).

“Meta business is strong and well-positioned for the future, so this feels like the right time to step away,” Sandberg said in a Facebook post, adding that she will serve as an adviser to the company. Mark Zuckerberg responded to her promise and said he’s looking forward to “a new chapter together”.

In addition to the 12 years on Meta’s board, Sandberg was the company’s chief operating officer for a total of 14 years. She stepped down from that position in 2022. The once second-in-command to founder Zuckerberg, Sandberg was one of the most visible executives at the company and the lead architect of its often-criticized ads-based business model, the report reads.

Prior to her Meta roles, Sandberg worked at Google and earlier, served as chief of staff for the United States Treasury Department under Bill Clinton. She’s been a vocal defender of Facebook over the course of many controversies and PR crises.

One such was in 2018 when The New York Times reported that Sandberg asked Facebook staff to look into George Soros’s financial interests that were interlinked with the social network. It all began when Soros delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum and described Facebook and Google as a “menace”, adding that they’ve caused “a variety of problems of which we are only now beginning to become aware”.

It’s perfectly normal to have an opinion on any matter, but when you’re a billionaire and your words could potentially drive markets, things are a bit more complicated. So, Sandberg wanted to know if Soros had anything to gain financially from publicly criticizing the tech giants. The problem was a potential short selling of Facebook’s stocks – long story short (pun intended), that’s when you bet against a company and make money when its stock price fails. Qualcomm has officially announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy, the chip that powers Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series. It is a modified version of the company’s latest flagship Android smartphone processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 launched in October 2023. The two firms worked closely to optimize the chip specifically for the new Galaxy flagships.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy is tailor-made for the Galaxy S24

Last year, Samsung shipped the Galaxy S23 series with a “For Galaxy” version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 globally. It featured a higher-clocked CPU and GPU than the standard version. The company is doing the same this year. The Snapdragon chip found in the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra is a customized version. It is tailor-made for the devices.

Neither Qualcomm nor Samsung has officially confirmed the clock speed of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy. However, leaks have revealed that its Cortex-X4 prime CPU core operates at a frequency of 3.39GHz, faster than the standard version’s 3.3GHz. Three Cortex-A720 cores are clocked at 3.1GHz while two others operate at a 2.9GHz frequency. The two Cortex-A520 cores are clocked at 2.2GHz.

These figures for the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 are 3.15GHz, 2.96GHz, and 2.27GHz, respectively. This means the “For Galaxy” version has its other CPU cores clocked slightly lower than the regular solution. However, we can’t rule out the possibility of the leaked figures missing a second digit after the decimal. We expect Qualcomm or Samsung to share the detailed specs soon.

If you have been following the Galaxy S24 rumors, you might already know that the new Samsung flagships don’t exclusively use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy. The smaller two models feature Samsung’s Exynos 2400 in most parts of the world, excluding the US and Canada where they get the Snapdragon. The Ultra ships with the tailor-made Snapdragon globally, though.

Both chips offer the same AI experience across the lineup

The Galaxy S24 series introduces a bunch of new AI features, many of which work on-device without requiring an active internet connection. Samsung refers to the whole suite as Galaxy AI. Despite the phones using two different chipsets, the company promises a consistent AI experience across the lineup no matter where you are. The Ultra has a few extra camera features enhanced by AI but that’s because it has a more powerful camera setup. Otherwise, you get the same AI experience on all three Gaalxy S24 models.

The FBI and CISA have jointly issued a security advisory, cautioning about the growing threat posed by the AndroxGh0st malware. Operators of this malware are actively engaged in constructing a botnet with the intent of carrying out Credential Theft and establishing Backdoor Access.

The FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) have issued a joint Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) revealing that Androxgh0st malware operators are trying to create a powerful botnet for victim identification and exploitation in target networks.

It is worth noting that, the AndroxGh0st malware was initially reported in December 2022. Thereupon, cybercriminals have continued presenting malware variants within the same family. Notably, one such instance is the Legion malware, known for its capabilities in credential harvesting and SMS hijacking.

As per the advisory, the malware targets .env files containing sensitive information like cloud credentials for high-profile applications, including Amazon Web Services Inc. Microsoft Office 365, SendGrid, and Twilio using Python-scripted techniques.

Androxgh0st also supports functions to abuse the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, such as scanning/exploiting credentials. It exploits vulnerabilities in web applications and servers, particularly those using the Laravel framework and PHPUnit, and certain versions of the Apache HTTP Server.

The threat actors have been using critical vulnerabilities, such as CVE-2017-9841, which allows remote PHP code execution via PHPUnit, and CVE-2021-41773, which affects Apache web servers running versions 2.4.49 or 2.4.50.

Androxgh0st malware TTPs involve scripts, scanning, and searching for websites with specific vulnerabilities. Threat actors exploit CVE-2017-9841 to run PHP code on fallible websites via PHPUnit remotely.

Furthermore, websites with exposed /vendor folders are subject to malicious HTTP POST requests to the /vendor/phpunit/phpunit/src/Util/PHP/eval-stdin.php uniform resource identifier. Threat actors use Androxgh0st to download malicious files and set up fake pages for backdoor access, allowing them to download additional malicious files and access databases.

Androxgh0st malware creates a botnet to scan and identify websites using the Laravel web application framework, determining if the domain’s root-level.env file is exposed. If exposed, they issue a GET request to the /.env URI or a POST request with a POST variable containing data sent to the web server. This method is used for websites in debug mode, where non-production websites are exposed to the internet. 

A successful response allows threat actors to look for usernames, passwords, and credentials for services like email and AWS accounts. The malware can access the Laravel application key on a website, enabling attackers to encrypt PHP code and pass it as a value in the cross-site forgery request (XSRF) token cookie, allowing remote code execution and remote file upload via CVE-2018-15133 vulnerability.

Regarding CVE-2021-41773, Androxgh0st operators scan vulnerable web servers running Apache HTTP Server versions 2.4.49 or 2.4.50, identifying uniform resource locators for files outside the root directory through path traversal attacks. They can obtain service credentials, access sensitive data, and conduct malicious operations. They have been observed creating new users and policies and conducting additional scanning activity.

To combat malicious cyber activity, prioritize patching exploited vulnerabilities in internet-facing systems, ensure only necessary servers and services are exposed to the internet, and review platforms/services with credentials listed in .env files for unauthorized access or use.

For insights into the latest security advisory, we reached out to John A. Smith, CEO of Conversant Group. “The CISA advisory provides Indicators of Compromise, which are very helpful. We also advise that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure—because AndroxGh0st is exploiting exposed .env files and unpatched vulnerabilities, it is well-advised to always inspect and monitor cloud environments regularly for any exposures and, have a very aggressive policy for out-of-band patching.”

The UK-based smartphone accessory maker, Mous, has launched a bunch of new protective cases for Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series. The firm made five stylish and durable back covers for the new Galaxy flagships, with one of them only available for the Ultra model. These accessories can be purchased from the official Mous website.

Mous is offering five distinct cases for the Galaxy S24 series

Mous’ collection of Galaxy S24 cases includes a super thin cover literally named Super Thin. With a thickness of just 1.2mm, the cover doesn’t make your phone bulky while still safeguarding it against everyday mishaps. Its MagSafe combability allows you to attach magnetic accessories. The firm has priced it at £27.99-£34.99/$44.99. The case comes in Black and Forest Green colors, but the latter is limited to the Ultra.

The Limitless 5.0 is a more sturdy case featuring AiroShock technology for extreme drop protection. It has raised edges around the camera and sides, a microfibre lining at the back, and rippled grip ribs on the rear surface. There are also eyelets on either side for wrist straps and phone slings. It costs £49.99-£59.99/$64.99 and is available in Aramid Fibre, Black Leather, Speckled Fabric, Walnut, and Bamboo colors for all three models. Galaxy S24 Ultra users can also pick it up in a Silver Pearl color.

Mous is also offering a couple of clear cases for the new Samsung flagships. One of them, called Clarity 2.0, comes with a magnetic attachment ring—the other is called Clarity. Both feature built-in anti-yellowing UV resistance, impact-absorbing AiroShock technology, and scratch resistance. You also get two eyelets on each. The Clarity 2.0 costs £54.99/$69.99 while the Clarity costs £49.99/$64.99. An Iridescent variant is available for the Ultra.

The award-winning Mous IntraLock case is exclusive to the Ultra model

Mous also has a Galaxy S24 Ultra-exclusive protective case in the offering. Called the IntraLock case, it is a winner of a Red Dot award for design. The cover features AiroShock protection, MagSafe compatibility, and IntraLock mechanical mounting technology. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with new display protection called ‘Gorilla Armor’. Corning actually released an official press release to announce this new screen protection. Just to be clear, only the ‘Ultra’ model has it, not the other two devices.

Corning says that Gorilla Armor enables “unprecedented durability and a maximized visual experience on Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone”. This new protection should also ensure “greatest protection against damage caused by daily wear”.

The Gorilla Armor is here, and it reduces reflections by up to 75%

Corning says that, unlike a typical glass surface, the Gorilla Armor reduces reflection by up to 75%. That basically makes the display more readable than it would have been with something else placed on top of it.

The company actually created a new lab test in order to demonstrate the scratch resistance of this glass. That test is called ‘Scratch Bot’, and it basically replicates micro scratches caused by daily wear. The Gorilla Armor showed exceptional results.

This new glass protection has an average of 25% pre-consumer recycled content. That was validated by UL Solutions in accordance with UL2809-2 Environmental Claim Validation Procedure (ECVP) for Recycled Content.

Micro scratches should not be a problem any longer

So, this glass protection comes with several advantages compared to its predecessors. It makes the display it covers a lot more vivid due to considerably reduced reflections. On top of that, it’s a lot more resistant to micro scratches, which is always great to hear.

It seems like Corning was more focused on making its glass protection more difficult to break in recent years, when micro scratches were just as important to some people. The more resistant to scratches that protection is, the less of a need for screen protectors you have. The same goes for impact resistance. They’re arguably just as important.

It remains to be seen if the Gorilla Armor is as tough as Corning says it is. Time will tell. We’ll see how our Galaxy S24 Ultra review unit does, and other people will surely share their experiences after a while.

Cisco NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway have been discovered to have two vulnerabilities, which were associated with remote code execution and denial of service.

The CVEs for these vulnerabilities were CVE-2023-6548 and CVE-2023-6549, and the severity has been given as 5.5 (Medium) and 8.2 (High).

In addition, these vulnerabilities were added to CISA’s known exploited vulnerabilities catalog, as there were reports of these two vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild by threat actors. CISA urges users to patch these vulnerabilities accordingly.

Vulnerability Analysis

CVE-2023-6548 is related to “Code Injection,” which allows an attacker to perform unauthenticated remote code execution on the Management interface of affected devices. Prerequisites for exploiting this vulnerability include access to NSIP, CLIP, or SNIP with a management interface.

CVE-2023-6549 was associated with denial of service vulnerability that can allow a threat actor to initial a denial of service condition, leading to the unusability of the device. To exploit this vulnerability, the appliance must be configured as a Gateway (VPN virtual server, ICA, Proxy, CVPN, RDP Proxy) or AAA virtual server.

As per reports, there were 1500 “exposed” NetScaler Management interfaces, most located in the United States. In addition, the flaws only affect customer-managed NetScaler appliances and not Citrix-managed cloud services and Adaptive Authentications.
