Yesterday, we exclusively leaked official renders of the Samsung Galaxy S24 in all four colors it will be available in. Later, renders of the Galaxy S24 Ultra showed up in a leak. Now, we have renders of the Galaxy S24+ as well, baring the entire flagship lineup ahead of the rumored launch in January 2024.

The Galaxy S24+ is essentially a bigger Galaxy S24. The two phones share the same design. We are talking about a flat front and back, as well as a flat frame with rounded corners. The power and volume buttons are on the right side. The display has symmetrical bezels while the rear camera array consists of three camera rings aligned vertically with no camera bump.

Samsung is readying the Galaxy S24 lineup in Onyx Black, Marble Gray, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow colors. These are the four basic colors that will be available globally. The company is also expected to offer the devices in Blue, Green, and Orange colors, but exclusively through its official website. The latest leak only gives us renders of the Galaxy S24+ in the four basic colorways.

While the leak isn’t accompanied by additional details, there is hardly anything we don’t know about the Galaxy S24+ or its siblings. In fact, the Plus model shares a lot of specs with the vanilla model. The device will be available in two processor variants—Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the US and a few other markets and Exynos 2400 in the rest of the world, including Europe.

Samsung will offer the phone with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB/512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. The Galaxy S23+ came with 8GB of RAM, so this upgrade will please power users. Those preferring a more compact handset may not like the fact that the base Galaxy S24 variant still comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Worst yet, it may be UFS 3.1 storage rather than UFS 4.0.

Same cameras but the Plus model has a larger display and battery

The Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ will feature the same camera hardware. We don’t have a confirmation but rumors have hinted at an unchanged setup from the Galaxy S23. If true, we will get a 50MP primary camera, 10MP ultrawide lens, 10MP zoom camera with 3x optical zoom, and 12MP selfie camera. The Galaxy S24+ will offer 8K video recording at 30fps with stereo sound audio. We are also expecting new AI-powered camera features.

Since the Galaxy S24+ is bigger, it has a larger display. We are expecting a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a WQHD+ resolution (3120 x 1440 pixels) and a 48-120Hz variable refresh rate. The screen may boast a peak brightness of 2,500 or 2,600 nits. Samsung is rumored to upgrade the entire lineup to the M13 OLED material, which has better power efficiency, luminance, and color accuracy than the previous-gen M12 material.

The Galaxy S24+ also gets a bigger battery, a 4,900mAh unit. It supports 45W wired charging and 15W wireless charging, along with reverse wireless charging. Like the 2023 model, Samsung is only offering Wi-Fi 6E on the phone. Wi-Fi 7 is reserved for the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Thankfully, the entire lineup appears to be getting satellite connectivity. The phones also feature an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint scanner, Samsung DeX, Ultra Wideband (UWB), AKG-tuned stereo speakers, and IP68 dust and water resistance.

AI features will be the highlight of the Galaxy S24 series

Samsung’s 2024 flagships don’t bring many hardware upgrades over the Galaxy S23. However, the new phones will introduce plenty of new software tricks powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Along with AI enhancements in photo and video quality, the Galaxy S24 phones will use AI to protect battery health, organize and summarize notes, add or remove objects from photos and videos, and expand photos by adding non-existent details.

Additionally, leaks have revealed AI features for voice recorder, Bixby Text Call, wallpapers, lockscreen, audio calls, and more. All of these features will be part of Samsung’s Android 14-based One UI 6.1 software. The Galaxy S24 series may launch on January 17, 2024, with general sales beginning on January 30. The lineup is expected to cost the same as the Galaxy S23—starting at $799 for the base model, $999 for the Plus, and $1,199 for the Ultra.

Interpol Nets $300 Million, Arrests 3,500 in Major Cyber Crime Bust

Interpol, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies worldwide, successfully blocked 82,112 suspicious bank accounts and seized $199 million in cash along with $101 million worth of crypto assets as part of their operation.

Interpol’s HAECHI IV operation, supported by the South Korean government, has led to the arrest of 3500 suspects and the seizure of assets worth $300m connected with organized cybercrime schemes. It was a six-month operation that started in July 2023.

The operation targeted seven types of scams: voice phishing, romance scams, sextortion, investment fraud, money laundering, business email compromise, and e-commerce fraud. Among these, investment fraud, business email compromise (BEC), and e-commerce fraud accounted for 75% of cases investigated involving police from 34 countries.

Authorities blocked 82,112 suspicious bank accounts and confiscated $199 million in cash and $101 million worth of crypto assets. Moreover, they collaborated with VASPs (virtual asset service providers) to identify/freeze 367 virtual asset accounts, including cryptocurrency accounts, directly linked to transnational organized crime.

The highlight of the operation was the arrest of a high-profile online gambling criminal suspect after two years of searching. The suspect was arrested in Manila by Korea’s National Police Agency.

HAECHI IV issued two purple notices to warn about new investment scam tactics, including selling fake NFTs and Deepfake technology. UK police reported cases of AI-generated content in impersonation scams, sextortion, and investment fraud.

Interpol executive director of police services, Stephen Kavanagh, stated that seizing a “staggering sum” of $300m indicates why there has been an “explosive growth” in transnational organized crime.

“This represents the savings and hard-earned cash of victims. This vast accumulation of unlawful wealth is a serious threat to global security and weakens the economic stability of nations worldwide,” Kavanagh added.

INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau in Korea, Kim Dong Kwon, praised global efforts to stay ahead of criminal trends, stating that Project HAECHI will continue to evolve and expand its scope to ensure criminals are apprehended and face due punishment. This isn’t the first such operation the Interpol has conducted in cooperation with transnational law enforcement agencies to nab cybercriminals and bust online crime networks. Earlier in December 2023, Hackread reported about Operation Storm Makers II, a global initiative by Interpol that led to the arrest of 281 individuals involved in human trafficking and migrant smuggling and the rescue of 149 victims through over 360 investigations.

In August, INTERPOL successfully dismantled the ’16shop’ phishing-as-a-service platform, arresting its operator and two facilitators with a joint effort between law enforcement and private sector partners, following Operation Narsil’s successful shutdown of a decade-old child abuse network.

US Galaxy S23 FE gets December update with 60 security fixes

Samsung‘s Galaxy S23 FE is receiving the December 2023 Android security patch in the US. The update is currently rolling out to carrier-locked units at least on Verizon’s network. Users on other networks—both carrier-locked and unlocked—should get the update soon.

It hasn’t even been two months since Samsung released the Galaxy S23 FE in the US. Landing in late October, the phone picked up the November security patch just two weeks after it arrived on the market. A week or so later, the new Fan Edition (FE) handset received the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update, the first of at least four major Android OS upgrades.

Today, Galaxy S23 FE users on Verizon’s network are receiving another update with the December security patch. The latest release comes with the firmware build number S711USQS1BWL1. The official changelog supplied by the carrier confirms that the update doesn’t bring anything more than this month’s security fixes. “The current software update provides the most up to date Android security patches on your device,” the changelog states.

Samsung has already detailed the content of the December 2023 SMR (Security Maintenance Release). The new security patch fixes more than 60 vulnerabilities across the Galaxy family. At least seven of those were critical security flaws in Android OS. These vulnerabilities could pave the way for a threat actor to access and gain full control of a compromised device remotely.

The latest update patches the flaws on your Galaxy S23 FE. The rollout may be currently limited to Verizon customers but it won’t be long before Samsung covers all users with the December SMR—stateside and abroad. Like before, you can check for new updates from the Settings app on your phone. Open the app, scroll down to enter the Software update menu, and tap on Download and install.

The new FE phone could get five major Android OS updates

Samsung pushes up to four major Android OS updates to its phones. The Galaxy S23 FE debuted with Android 13, so it should get updates till Android 17. However, in Europe, the phone ran Android 14 out of the box. As per its policy, Samsung needs to update the phone to Android 18 in the region. If it decides to keep parity globally, US Galaxy S23 FE users might get Android 18 too. That would be the fifth major update stateside. Whether that happens, time will tell.

Beeper resurrects iMessage on Android, with a catch, as a last-ditch effort

The battle for open messaging between iOS and Android has taken a surprising turn as Beeper, the ambitious app challenging Apple’s iMessage dominance, throws in the towel on direct integration. Following repeated shutdowns by Apple, Beeper has opted for a strategic retreat, open-sourcing its iMessage connection software and refocusing on building a universal chat platform.Beeper Mini, the Android app offering seamless iMessage access, had been hailed as a game-changer, allowing Android users to ditch the dreaded green bubble for the encrypted blue embrace. However, Apple’s aggressive moves – first blocking phone number registration, then disabling logins altogether – proved too much for the smaller company.

“Each takedown erodes our credibility,” Beeper CEO Eric Migicovsky admitted. “We can’t win a cat-and-mouse game with Apple.” Because of this, Beeper is giving it just one more try and has chosen transparency over a continued fight going forward. Their iMessage connection software is now freely available on GitHub, inviting the developer community to take the reins.

This open-source approach represents a gamble. While it potentially empowers others to build iMessage bridges, it also exposes Beeper’s secret sauce to Apple’s scrutiny. “We do not have any current plans to respond if this solution is knocked offline,” Migicovsky stated, implying a measured acceptance of potential future blockades.

However, this isn’t a white flag. Beeper is redirecting its energy towards its core vision: a unified chat platform transcending ecosystems. “We’re shifting focus back to building the best chat app on earth,” Migicovsky declared. This broader ambition aims to encompass all messaging services, offering a single interface for SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, and beyond.

Meanwhile, Beeper has delivered a fix that restores both iMessage functionality and phone number registration for Beeper Mini and Cloud users. However, it comes with a caveat: Mac access is now mandatory. The workaround utilizes registration data from either an old iPhone or, preferably, a Mac computer. Beeper explains that they relied on their own server farm for this data previously, making users vulnerable to Apple’s targeting. By shifting to individual device registration, they aim to achieve greater stability and resilience.

The news is undoubtedly bittersweet. While Beeper’s ingenuity is commendable, the reliance on Apple hardware poses a challenge to its inclusivity. Some see Beeper’s latest move as a pragmatic retreat, others a symbolic defeat. One thing is certain: the war for messaging supremacy is far from over.

The cat’s out of the bag! OnePlus 12R specs just hit the internet

OnePlus is dealing with a bit of backlash after the early launch of the OnePlus 12. While this is the case, we’re getting news about another phone coming from the company. The OnePlus 12R is set to be another viable option, and this phone just got a pretty significant leak. In this leak, we get a pretty good idea of how this phone’s going to perform.

As with any leak, you’ll want to take it with a grain of salt. While this information is from trusted leaker Max Jambor, there’s always that chance that some information will be inaccurate. More information will come about this phone as it gets closer to its launch.

We have a fresh leak of the OnePlus 12R

If you’re in the States, then you won’t really know about the OnePlus R series of phones. It usually stays in the Chinese market, but we’ve heard that this will be the first time that this phone comes to the global market. Think of it as the FE equivalent of the OnePlus phones. You’ll get this phone for a slightly diminished flagship experience. This is evident by the specs.

Starting off with the display, we’re looking at a 6.67-inch ProXDR display with the LTPO 4.0 refresh rate technology. This means that it will be able to vary its refresh rate based on what content is on the screen. The screen is also said to use Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Now, for what’s under the hood. The OnePlus 12R could use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and have either 8GB of RAM and/or 16GB of RAM Either way, they’re LPDDRX5 RAM. As for storage, we’re looking at pretty typical capacities, 128GB and 256GB of UFS4.0 storage.

Moving onto the battery, it looks like OnePlus wants to use a large 5,500mAh battery. That’s 10% larger than most standard batteries on the market. Along with that, this phone could have 100W SUPEFRVOOC charging.

As for the camera, the rumor points to this phone having a 50MP main shooter (IMX890) with an 8MP ultrawide camera and a 2MP macro camera. We don’t know about the front-facing camera.

In the image, we see the two colors that these phones could come in. One’s called Iron Gray, and the other is Cool Blue. We don’t know what prices to expect, but we have word on the launch date. According to the leak, the phone will launch in China on January 4th and hit the global market on January 23rd.

Beeper’s Next Route for iMessage on Android involves Renting Jailbroken iPhones

When Beeper Mini launched earlier this month, it was a pretty big deal. The company was able to reverse-engineer a way to get iMessage working on Android without the need for an old Mac or other Apple device nor needing to login to your Apple ID. Of course, that didn’t last long.

Now, after a few different methods have been blocked by Apple, Beeper has detailed its latest route for getting iMessage to work on Android. The blog post actually went live yesterday but was quickly removed. Today, the blog post is back up.

According to Beeper, the catch here is that you will need access to an old iPhone or Mac or someone who has access to a Mac. Basically, Beeper wants you to get an old iPhone (preferably an iPhone X or earlier – one that is not getting new iOS updates). Beeper then details how you can jailbreak the iPhone to install a Beeper tool that will generate an iMessage registration code. Then you’ll be able to set up Beeper Mini and enter your code. That will allow phone number registration to work. You’ll need to keep the iPhone plugged into power at home, connected to WiFi.

The other option is going to be to set up Beeper Desktop on a Mac. Use your iMessage registration code to set up Beeper Mini, and you’ll be on your way.

But it gets even crazier, Beeper will rent jailbroken iPhones to you

If you don’t have an old iPhone, which many of us don’t, then Beeper has a resolution for that too. There’s a form that you can fill out to rent (for a few dollars per month) or buy an old iPhone with the app pre-loaded, which Beeper will sell you for $30 to $50 per month. Beeper says that this service will be available in the new year.

Why is Beeper doing this? Well, previously, it was using its own fleet of Mac servers to provide identification information called ‘registration data’ from a real Mac for iMessage registration. But as we’ve seen earlier this week, Apple has figured that out and started to block those Macs.

So now, with Beeper Cloud (Mac version) and old iPhones, they can generate unique registration data just for you. Beeper says that in their testing, this has made the connection very reliable. And if you use Beeper Mini, you can use your Mac registration data with it as well, and Beeper Mini will start to work again. Unfortunately, Beeper does need to periodically regenerate this data after you’ve connected, roughly once per week or month, which is why the Mac or iPhone needs to be switched on regularly.

It’s not perfect, but it does work. It likely won’t be long before Apple blocks this method as well, however.

Google really went all out with AI tech in 2023!

Every company accomplishes a lot of things over the course of a year. Google, one of the largest companies in the world, has accomplished a ton this year, and it’s not shy about letting us know. In a new blog post, Google lets us know its achievements in 2023, and most of them are centered around AI.

Google has been working on artificial intelligence for years. It’s on the mission to push humanity forward with powerful and innovative technology. Well, that was its mission until November 20th, 2022, the date that ChatGPTfirst launched. Since then, it feels like the company has just been trying to keep up to keep OpenAI from stealing Google’s primary source of income. So, it should be no surprise that the company is really going ham on the AI.

2023 was the year of Google AI

The company listed 23 achievements to celebrate the end of 2023. Dotting the list, there are some achievements that weren’t all about AI. For instance, #4 was welcoming Android 14 (Oh Google, that one should have been #14). #5 was the welcoming of the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 7a, and Pixel Fold while #6 was the company welcoming the Pixel Tablet and the Pixel Buds Pro.

The list goes on with the company talking about other achievements like the Pixel Watch 2, Immersive View for Maps, RCS, passkeys, Chromebook Plus, and a few more. These are all notable achievements and some of them filled the headlines.

However, Google’s AI achievements tipped the scale in this regard. The blog post notes the company’s AI releases, and there are a lot of them. This year has been long, so it’s early to forget about some of the things that the company did.

To no one’s surprise, welcoming Gemini was #1, and releasing Bard was #2. These are two of the company’s biggest generative AI products, and they showed just how powerful Google’s AI is. We can’t forget about the Generative AI in Search (#3), AI tools added to Workspace (#14, #15) Duet AI in Google Cloud (#16), and more. All in all

All in all, 11 of the 23 items involved AI in some way shape, or form. It shows that 2023 was the year for Google AI, and the company is excited about expanding the list in 2024.

Leak confirms Galaxy S24 launch date and AI integration

There is no end to Galaxy S24 leaks. Shortly after we exclusively revealed the official renders of the base Galaxy S24, renders of the Plus and Ultra models leaked too. A fresh leak has confirmed the launch date for the new phones. As rumored before, Samsung will host the Galaxy Unpacked event on January 17, 2024 (January 18 in some countries due to the time difference).

Leak reveals the Galaxy S24 launch date

Noted X leakster Evan Blass recently shared a GIF that appears to be a short screen recording from a page on Samsung’s official website. The said page shows a countdown to the live stream of the next Galaxy Unpacked event.  It has a button to add the event to your calendar. The time and date for the event are mentioned too. It kicks off at 3 AM KST (Korea Standard Time) on Thursday, January 18, 2024.

That’s 10 AM PT/1 PM EST/6 PM GMT/ 11:30 PM IST on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Since the event is rumored to take place in San Jose, California, USA, the local start time of the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event will be 10 AM on January 17. While the leaked official countdown doesn’t mention the Galaxy S24, we all know that Samsung will launch the new flagship lineup at the event.

Leaks have revealed that the Galaxy S24 phones will have artificial intelligence (AI) built into the system. Samsung has baked AI into the One UI software for a seamless user experience. You will find AI in almost every system app and function, from calling and voice recorder to camera, galley, Samsung Notes, Settings, and more. The new flagships will offer AI features and functional enhancements everywhere.

While this leak doesn’t give us the market release date for the Galaxy S24 trio, earlier leaks have revealed that too. As usual, Samsung will open pre-orders for the new flagships immediately after the launch event on January 17. General sales of the phones are expected to begin on January 30.
