Cracked macOS Software Laced with New Trojan Proxy Malware

Kaspersky recently uncovered the most recent Trojan Proxy malware campaign, revealing that the earliest submission of the payload on VirusTotal can be traced back to April 28, 2023.

Cybercriminals have typically been keen on exploiting macOS applications to target Mac users, and this time, they might just have hit the jackpot. According to the latest research from cybersecurity researchers at Kaspersky, threat actors are deploying a novel Trojan Proxy malware in cracked applications, distributed via unauthorized websites. The plan behind this operation is to compromise Mac devices.

Researchers observed that the campaign’s earliest payload submission on VirusTotal was on April 28, 2023. Further probing revealed that the malware is disguised within popular copyrighted macOS software available on warez sites.

For your information, Warez sites are websites that offer copyrighted digital content, such as software, movies, music, ebooks, and games, for free or at a significantly lower price than the original product.

Cracked macOS Software Laced with New Proxy Trojan Malware

The malware allows attackers to build a proxy server network to commit crimes or make profits. When installed, this malware converts computers into anonymous traffic-forwarding terminals, allowing malware operators to perform malicious activities, such as phishing, hacking, or conducting illegal transactions. 

“Attackers can use this type of malware to gain money by building a proxy server network or to perform criminal acts on behalf of the victim: to launch attacks on websites, companies and individuals, buy guns, drugs, and other illicit goods” researchers explained in a blog post.

Infected applications appear as legitimate cracked software, distributed as .PKG installers rather than the usual disk images. A post-installation script replaces two system files with malicious versions from the app resources and grants them administration permissions. A fake Google configuration file (p.plist) automatically starts the WindowServer malware file as a system process. 

This binary file was uploaded on VirusTotal on April 28 but wasn’t recognized as malware then. The malware utilizes DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) to get the C2 server IP address and connects via WebSockets, receiving commands for the various malicious activities the Trojan can perform and sending information. 

However, during their research, investigators didn’t receive a server response beyond the 0x38 command and noted that the client supported TCP and UDP connections. Earlier versions relied on traditional DNS requests instead of DoH for C&C server acquisition.

It is worth noting that selling access to these proxies is a highly profitable business, encompassing massive botnets. Kaspersky researchers noted that Mac devices aren’t immune to this deep-rooted threat, which is why this campaign works. 

Attackers are exploiting the popularity of cracked versions of copyrighted software, specifically commercial software/programs, as users prefer to avoid paying for premium software.

Around 35 instances of popular image editing, data recovery, video compression and editing, and network scanning tools-related apps laced with Trojan Proxy were identified by Kaspersky.

Beyond macOS, researchers have identified Android and Windows versions connecting to the same C&C server. This means a larger distribution network for cracked software laced with Trojan Proxy malware could be at work.

Menlo Security’s chief security architect, Lionel Litty, shared with Hackread.com that using DoH and WebSocket indicates that threat actors are focusing more on evading network-based detection mechanisms.

“The use of DoH and WebSocket shows that more sophisticated bad actors are focused on evading network-based detection mechanisms an enterprise may have deployed,” Litty explained.

“DoH will often mean the malware can evade detection from products that look at DNS traffic for IOCs since DNS traffic is now wrapped within HTTPS connections that may not be inspected or that are inspected by solutions that do not understand DoH semantics,” Little added.

“Likewise, network devices that inspect HTTPS traffic may not understand WebSocket semantics and may fail to run signature-based detections that target the payloads of C&C traffic used by the malware” Litty warned.

OnePlus Nord 3 starts getting Android 14 update

Android 14 update has started rolling out to a number of OnePlus phones thus far. The company’s 2023 flagship, the OnePlus 11 started getting the update, and the same goes for the OnePlus 10T, and more devices. Well, the latest in the line is the OnePlus Nord 3, as Android 14 has started rolling out to that phone.

Do note that the update has started rolling out in a single market, for now. It is rolling out to Open Beta participants in India. That update is expected to spread like wildfire if no major bugs pop up. So, other markets should start getting it soon.

The OnePlus Nord 3 twin, OnePlus 11R, has started receiving this update too. The build numbers for the update are a bit different between them. The OnePlus Nord 3 is receiving CPH2491_14.0.0.100, while the OnePlus 11R is receiving CPH2487_14.0.0.201. OxygenOS 14 comes pre-installed on Android 14 here, of course.

Fluid Cloud, File Dock & Smart Cutout are useful, newly-added features

Having said that, a number of features are added here, the same as on other devices that are getting the update. Let’s start with Fluid Cloud. It is a new way of interaction with morphing forms. This allows you to view up-to-date info at a glance.

File Dock has also been added. This feature allows you to use drag and drop to transfer content between apps and devices. The Content Extraction feature can recognize and extract text and images from the screen. A single tap is required for this.

Smart Cutout is another useful feature added with OxygenOS 14. It allows you to separate multiple objects in a photo from the background. That way you don’t have to manually cut something out from a picture.

The ‘Shelf’ has been improved, and the same goes for the company’s Aquamorphic Design

The ‘Shelf’ has been improved, as more widget recommendations have been added. General system stability has been improved by the company. Apps should launch a bit faster now, while the OS will be smoother and animations better.

The company’s Aquamorphic Design has been cleaned up as well. It will have a clearer color style following this update. Some Aquamorphic-themed ringtones have been added too, and the notification sounds have been revamped.

On top of all that, a carbon tracking AOD screen has been added. It visualizes the carbon emissions you avoid when walking, instead of using a car.

Samsung is preparing to launch the Galaxy S24 flagships in January 2024. The phones will arrive with One UI 6.1 out of the box, an updated version of the company’s Android 14-based custom software. It will bring a few new features and functional improvements. Among those could be an AI-powered tool called Battery protection that may take better care of your Galaxy’s battery health.

Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones feature a tool called “Protect battery” that helps extend the lifespan of the battery. When enabled, it limits the maximum charge to 85%. Your phone will never charge to 100%, thus preserving battery health in the long run. If you need to, you can simply disable the feature from settings to fully charge the battery. It is a great option to have on your phone.

With One UI 6.1, Samsung will seemingly rename the tool and make it more powerful with the help of AI. A leak from X user Tarnuvats33 shows that “Protect battery” will be renamed to “Battery protection.” More importantly, it will offer three different modes. The Basic mode will stop charging the phone after it reaches 100% even if you keep it plugged in. This will protect the battery’s health.

The phone won’t start charging again until the battery level drops to 95%, or you unplug and plug it back. In the latter case, the tool will kick in as soon as the battery reaches 100% again. This mode is ideal for those who want a full charge while still being able to preserve the battery health a little. For those who can frequently put the phone in charge, the Max mode is the best. In this mode, the battery will never charge beyond 80%.

Finally, there is an Adapt mode that may rely on AI and usage patterns to give you a balance between battery health and charge capacity. It stops charging the phone at 80% after you go to sleep. However, the battery will be charged fully before you wake up in the morning. You get to charge the phone overnight without worrying about battery health and still start the day at 100% battery.

Other Galaxy devices will also get One UI 6.1

One UI 6.1 will debut with the Galaxy S24 series and will roll out to other eligible models later, including recent flagships and foldables. We expect the company to push the tool to other models with the One UI 6.1 update. Stay tuned for the official announcement.

Google Pixel phones get a better Clock app and World Clock widget due to this new app

This week, Google rolled out a slew of new features for its Pixel phones, including the December Feature Drop and the Gemini AI, its answer to GPT-4. But amidst these major updates, a small but significant change landed: a new Weather app that powers weather information within the Clock app.

This new app, which now has its own listing on the Play Store, is distinct from the redesigned weather forecasts accessible through the Google app or the At a Glance widget. It exists to provide weather data for the Clock app, offering current conditions and forecasts within its interface, as well as the World Clock home screen widget.

Once downloaded, the app prompts users to add local weather to the Clock app. After granting necessary permissions, the current weather conditions will appear alongside the time, both for your location and any added time zones. The app further integrates with your alarm, displaying current conditions and a daily forecast upon dismissal. 

This integration was first spotted by Android expert Mishaal Rahman during the development phase of the December Feature Drop. Initially limited to the Pixel 8 series, it is now available on all Pixel phones running the update, all the way back to Pixel 5a. Google Pixel users enrolled in the QPR1 Beta Program may also recall getting this feature in limited fashion back in October as part of Android 14 QPR1 Beta 2. It was also not showing up as a separate Play Store app at the time.
It is important to note that ,while convenient, the app’s functionality remains limited. Tapping the current conditions doesn’t reveal deeper details or hourly forecasts. Additionally, once enabled, turning off weather integration requires navigating through system settings. Also, as it is meant for the Pixel Clock app, this Weather app is currently only available on Pixel devices and not installable on other Android phones.

Despite its seemingly small value, the new Weather app offers a convenient way to access weather information without leaving the Clock app. Its integration with the alarm and World Clock widget adds further value, making it a helpful tool for Pixel users.

Samsung’s design evolution starts with Galaxy Z Fold 6 & Flip 6

A few days back, it was reported that Samsung is planning significant design changes for the Galaxy S25 series, which will arrive in early 2025. It appears the company’s design overhaul of Galaxy devices will begin in 2024 itself. Not with the Galaxy S24 series, of course, but with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. The new foldables should debut in July or August next year.

Samsung‘s smartphone design has hardly evolved in recent years. The company has refined the design with each new generation but we haven’t seen radical redefinitions. Be it budget and mid-range models, flagships, or foldables, recent Galaxy devices have looked identical to their predecessors. Based on leaks, the Korean firm seemingly doesn’t plan to change things much with the next crop of Galaxy phones either.

The Galaxy S24 series is only getting an incremental design refinement, and so are the 2024 Galaxy A models. At least those coming in the first half of next year, such as the Galaxy A25 5G, Galaxy A35, and Galaxy A55. However, starting in the second half of 2024, Samsung phones may look a lot different. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 will reportedly kick off this endeavor.

According to the Korean media, the 2024 foldables will feature bigger and wider displays. Both the external cover screen and the inner folding display will be wider, with thinner bezels. Samsung will also reduce the weight of the devices, which is great news when you consider that the screens are getting bigger. The company will pull this off by making the phones thinner. Hopefully, this won’t reduce the battery capacity.

This isn’t the first time we have heard about Samsung redesigning its foldables next year. An earlier report said the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s cover display will measure about 3.9 inches diagonally. The current model has a 3.4-inch cover screen. The planned changes will make the Galaxy Z Fold 6’s cover screen more like a proper smartphone display. It is a bit too narrow currently.

A former Mercedes design head is behind this Galaxy redesign

Hubert H. Lee, a former Chief Design Officer for Mercedes, is behind this rumored Galaxy redesign next year. Samsung hired Lee in December last year to lead its smartphone design team. He has over two decades of experience in the field of product design. The Korean firm entrusted him with reshaping the look and feel of Galaxy devices through the art of design. Whether Lee and the team can impress Samsung fans with their work, time will tell.

The Browse tab allows users to explore and discover podcasts directly from their vehicle, featuring recommendations and top charts. Podcast playback works with Tesla’s Media Player, providing convenient playback control while driving. Furthermore, results from Apple Podcasts will seamlessly integrate into Tesla’s unified search experience.

Tesla owners in 47 countries and regions across 14 languages can anticipate the availability of Apple Podcasts. Previously, the Podcasts app had extended its reach beyond Apple’s ecosystem, embracing Amazon Alexa devices in 40 countries worldwide.

That will be a quad-curved display, and OPPO will utilize an optical in-display fingerprint scanner. Many people expected an ultrasonic one, as the OPPO Find X6 Pro uses one, but it seems like that won’t be the case. OPPO’s in-display fingerprint scanner implementations are usually excellent, so it likely won’t really matter all that much. The tipster did say this will be an “ultra-thin optical” fingerprint scanner.

Digital Chat Station also confirmed that an alert slider will make an appearance. That was to be expected. The OPPO Find N3 includes one, so… the differences between OnePlus and OPPO devices are starting to fade.

We’ll get two members of the Find X7 series

The tipster did confirm that both PHZ110 and PHY110 models are coming. The PHZ110 will be fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. The PHY110 will utilize the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 SoC, based on previous information.

Those two models are supposed to represent the OPPO Find X7 Pro, and the OPPO Find X7. Furthermore, both of those devices also surfaced on China’s 3C authority. Their charging speeds have been confirmed thanks to those listings.

It seems like both the OPPO Find X7 and Find X7 Pro will support 100W wired charging. The site did not reveal their wireless charging speeds, though. At least the ‘Pro’ model will support fast wireless charging, almost certainly 50W one. We’re not sure about the vanilla model.

Furthermore, the tipster also said that the design and performance of Qualcomm’s Oryon architecture has “significantly improved”. So, based on this information, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 sure seems promising.

We didn’t really get a chance to test out the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 properly just yet. Smartphones featuring that chip are reaching the market, but we’re only at the very start of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 adventure in the market.

It remains to be seen if that will be an issue or not, but chances are it’ll be just fine. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is not expected to arrive anytime soon, of course. That chip will likely launch in Q4 next year, so we’re in for quite a wait until that happens.

Hashtags come to Threads under a different name

As many of you know, Meta’s Threads social media network launched without support for hashtags. Meta did promise that the feature is coming, and wider experiments started last month. Well, the feature is now here, it’s rolling out to everyone.

The thing is, Threads is not officially referring to hashtags as hashtags. The platform’s implementation of hashtags is called ‘tags’, and it works a bit differently than regular hashtags. Threads put its own spin to it.

So, what’s the difference? Well, you’ll still be using the ‘#’ symbol to indicate tags, but you can use spaces and special characters. That’s not something that you can do in regular hashtags. Also, you’re limited to a single tag for each post, unlike on other social media networks.

Needless to say, this has been a highly-requested feature, and Threads finally delivered. Hashtags are quite popular on Instagram, another Meta app, while they’re also used on Facebook. Twitter is well-known for hashtags too. It’s nice to see that Threads is now also offering the option, though a quite limiting one.

Tags offer a bit more freedom on one hand, but are also kind of more limiting

Other than the fact you’re limited to one tag and you have more freedom in terms of spaces and special characters, tags work basically the same as hashtags. Once you select one, or search for it, you’ll get a selection of posts in which that tag has been used.

The new feature has been announced by Adam Mosseri via Threads. He did add that the feature is “rolling out globally”. Do note that Threads is still not available in the EU, but the support may be coming before the end of this month.

Threads managed to grow incredibly fast when it launched, and Meta is doing its best to keep users on the platform. Many see Threads as the ideal competitor to Elon Musk’s X platform (formerly known as Twitter).
