As the most popular online video-sharing platform, YouTube is constantly evolving to offer a richer experience to its users. The Google-owned platform has recently rolled out some cool features, including stable volume, screen lock, and the “You” tab. But the latest addition to YouTube could be a real-time view and likes counter.

The count of views and likes are the main parameters to determine the popularity of content on YouTube. The platform also monetizes videos based on their views and interactions. The current likes and views counter on YouTube doesn’t change in real-time and requires a refresh. However, this could soon change thanks to the new feature in the works.

As you can see below, the views and likes of a video update in real-time through a nifty animation, regardless of whether the video is playing or paused. The real-time counter supposedly updates itself even when you open another app or reopen YouTube.

YouTube has yet to stay tight-lipped about the details of the feature and when it lands on the app. A limited number of YouTube users could now access the feature, but it might take a few months before it becomes available to users globally. You can update your YouTube app to the latest version to check if the feature is activated for you.

As YouTube test features and experiments read, “If you ever notice that YouTube looks a bit different for you than it does for your friend or family member, you’re likely seeing one of these experiments.” You can send your feedback to YouTube via the app’s menu.

Real-time views and likes counters are reasonable indications of how a video performs on YouTube. It also lets you know how many other users watch the same content simultaneously. YouTube still needs to release more details about the feature and its global availability.

YouTube currently has a few new features in works that we could hear more about in the future. Meanwhile, the platform has recently rolled out AI-generated soundtracks for Shorts to a limited group of users. Additionally, it’s widely rolling out a smaller button to skip ads.

Meta to remove cross-app chatting between Messenger and Instagram

Meta has just made a surprising announcement concerning the cross-app communication between Messenger and Instagram. It looks like starting mid-December, we’ll no longer be able to chat with Facebook accounts on Instagram.

Also, Facebook accounts will no longer be able to view the Activity Status of an Instagram user or whether a message has been seen them. It goes even further, as Meta announced that any existing chats with Facebook accounts will not move to the inbox on Facebook or Messenger.

According to Meta, all existing chats on Instagram that someone had with Facebook accounts will become read-only, even if these accounts are removed from the chat. As a result, those with Instagram accounts will no longer be able to send new messages in these chats.

Initially revealed back in 2019, the ability to chat between Messenger and Instagram users was made available to everyone a year later. Meta hasn’t said anything about the reason behind its decision to remove this feature, but it might have something to do with the regulatory guidelines in the EU.

No exact date was provided for the removal of the cross-app chatting feature, but it’s sad to see this go. It’s unlikely that Meta will replace the feature with an improved iteration, but one can only hope.

Galaxy Tab Active 5 Pro certified with 10,000mAh battery, S Pen

Alongside a rugged smartphone, the Galaxy Xcover 7, Samsung may also be readying a rugged Android tablet. The unannounced tablet was recently certified by the FCC, revealing a few key specs in the process. The device will succeed last year’s Galaxy Tab Active 4 Pro and may arrive as the Galaxy Tab Active 5 Pro or Galaxy Tab Active 5.

The new Samsung tablet has model numbers SM-X300 and SM-X306B, which are Wi-Fi and cellular (5G) variants of the same product. The FCC certified both and revealed that the tablet packs a 10,000mAh battery with support for 15W fast wired charging. It boasts 128GB of internal storage (may be available in other storage options) and features a microSD card slot for expanding the storage capacity externally.

The Galaxy Tab Active 5 Pro supports the S Pen, the FCC documents confirmed. The stylus pen accessory bears the model number EJ-PT870 (via MySmartPrice). Details about its latency and other specs are missing. However, since we are talking about a rugged product, the S Pen should feature a rugged design too. We are expecting a strong build with deep grooves on the body for better grip.

Speaking of ruggedness, the tablet itself should feature a MIL-STD-810G-compliant build quality with IP68 dust and water resistance and drop-to-concrete resistance. The screen should also boast enhanced touch sensitivity so it could be used with wet fingers or gloves. Samsung’s Active-series tablets and Xcover-series phones are targeted at people working outdoors in harsh environmental conditions.

The rest of the specs of the Galaxy Tab Active 5 Pro are still under wraps. Based on the battery capacity, it could be bigger than the 2022 model, which has a 7,600mAh battery and a 10.1-inch display. Samsung certainly hasn’t made the tablet significantly bulkier than 10.2mm in thickness. So a bigger screen, possibly 11-12 inches, may also be on the cards. We expect more leaks and rumors about the tablet in the coming months.

The new rugged tablet may debut in 2024

As of this writing, there is no word on the launch of the Galaxy Tab Active 5 Pro or whatever else the upcoming rugged Samsung tablet is called. The previous two models in the series debuted in September 2022 and September 2020. The new device may not be here until a few months in 2024. Samsung could unveil it after the Galaxy S24 series, which arrives in the second half of January.

Samsung spent $7 billion in purchasing chipsets this year

Samsung has been increasingly using Qualcomm and MediaTek processors in Galaxy products in recent years. Case in point, the Galaxy S23 series shipped with a Snapdragon chip globally, with no Exynos variant. Unsurprisingly, its total expenditure on purchasing smartphone chipsets has increased sharply. The amount has almost quadrupled since 2019.

Samsung is spending more on smartphone chipsets than before

Samsung is one of the few chip designers with a semiconductor foundry. The likes of Qualcomm and MediaTek are fabless companies, meaning that they don’t have manufacturing lines. They depend on Samsung, TSMC, and other foundries to produce their chips. In a sense, the Korean behemoth is semiconductor self-sufficient, as it also makes memory and storage solutions.

However, its semiconductor and mobile divisions work independently and have a buy-sell relationship. So the mobile unit has the freedom to buy chips from external companies. With flagship Exynos products struggling to compete against Snapdragon, Samsung decided to ditch in-house chips for the Galaxy S23 series this year, leading to the cancellation of the Exynos 2300.

While consumers applauded it for the bold decision, it was a massive loss for the company as a whole. The chip division lost a major client, while the smartphone unit saw its expenses grow. Even if it gets a competitive price, buying semiconductors from external companies has added costs related to production and inventory management. Tipster Revegnus has shared data showing how Samsung’s chip expenses have increased in recent years.

According to the new report, Samsung purchased chips worth $6.943 billion in the first three quarters of 2023. The total spending in 2019 was just $2.3 billion, so the amount has almost quadrupled over the past four years. It spent $4.3 billion in 2020, $4.8 billion in 2021, and $7.1 billion in 2022. The Q1-Q3 total for this year is 10.4 percent higher compared to the same period last year. So the total amount for 2023 may surpass $8 billion.

The Galaxy S24 will have an Exynos variant

The growing share of Qualcomm and MediaTek processors in Galaxy smartphones and tablets added to Samsung’s chip expenses in recent years. The company may salvage the situation a little next year thanks to the return of flagship Exynos solutions. The Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ will ship with the Exynos 2400 in some markets, including Europe and India. The US and a few other regions will get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra, meanwhile, will be powered by the Snapdragon chip globally. Since the Ultra model usually accounts for the majority of all Samsung flagship sales, the share of Exynos chips will be paltry in front of the Snapdragon. However, the Korean firm has a bigger plan for 2025. Its smartphone division is developing a custom processor for the Galaxy S25, so the Snapdragon might be phased out completely in a couple of years, at least from the flagship lineup.

Google TV releases Advent Calendar to get you into the holiday spirit

If you’re using a Chromecast with Google TV device, you’ll be happy to know that Google is now offering an advent calendar of content recommendations to get you into the holiday spirit.

Spotted by Android Authority, the advent calendar offers a movie or Christmas special recommendation each day until Christmas. Normally, you’re not allowed to see the entire list of advent calendar recommendations, but for some reason some users have access to it.

Much of the content on the list is coming from Disney Plus, but Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Netflix have some of their movies among the advent calendar’s recommendations too, alongside many rentals.

That being said, here are some of the advent calendar recommendations offered this week:

  • The Shepherd (December 1)
  • The Nightmare Before Christmas (December 2)
  • Little Women (December 3)
  • The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (December 4)

One thing that’s missing from the list is the first Die Hard movie, which only makes sense if Google doesn’t believe it’s truly a Christmas movie. That’s not ok, Google!

OnePlus 12 specifications

The OnePlus 12 has been announced in China today. We’ve already talked about the phone in our initial announcement. We’re here to take a closer look at the OnePlus 12 specifications, as the phone does have a lot to offer in that regard.

The OnePlus 12 includes an immensely powerful set of specifications

First and foremost, do note that the OnePlus 12 features a 6.82-inch QHD+ (3168 x 1440) display from BOE. It’s the BOE X1 panel that the company announced together with OnePlus and OPPO. It is a curved display with a centered display camera hole. It is an AMOLED LTPO display with an adaptive refresh rate (1-120Hz).

This panel also goes up to 4,500 nits of brightness at its peak. That makes it technically the brightest display in the industry as of now. The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects this phone’s display. The bezels around the display are very minimal, and the screen-to-body ratio is 93.5%. We’re also looking at a PPI of 510. High-frequency PWM dimming is also a part of the package (2,160Hz).

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is combined with up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC from Qualcomm fuels this smartphone. That is the company’s most powerful processor. OnePlus is offering 12GB, 16GB, and 24GB (LPDDR5X) RAM variants of the phone. The 12GB RAM model comes with 256GB of storage, the 16GB RAM variant includes 512GB of storage, while the 16GB and 24GB RAM units include 1TB of storage. All storage models use UFS 4.0.

OnePlus is also using advanced cooling here. The company is utilizing a large vapor chamber with a dual-cycle heat dissipation structure. The OnePlus 12 is also IP65 certified for water and dust resistance. It comes with Android 14 out of the box, and OxygenOS 14 on top of it.

A large 5,400mAh battery is backed by 100W wired & 50W wireless charging

A 5,400mAh battery sits inside the phone, while the device supports 100W wired charging. 50W wireless charging is also supported here, as it’s making a comeback this year. The OnePlus 11 did not offer it. 10W reverse wireless charging is supported. OnePlus does include a 100W charger in the box, and a Type-A to Type-C cable. A protective case is also included.

A 50-megapixel main camera (Sony LYT-808 sensor, f/1.6 aperture, 23mm 7P lens, OIS) is included here. A 48-megapixel ultrawide camera (Sony IMX581 sensor, f/2.2 aperture, 114-degree FoV, 14mm focal length, 6P lens, 3.5cm macro shooting) also sits on the back, and so does a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto (OmniVision’s OV64B sensor, f/2.6 aperture, 70mm focal length, 4P lens, OIS, 3x optical zoom, 6x in-sensor zoom) unit. There is a 32-megapixel camera (21mm focal length, 5P lens) included on the front.

A new vibration motor is used here, along with Bluetooth 5.4 & Wi-Fi 7

The company also included a new vibration motor here. OnePlus refers to it as ‘Bionic Vibration Motor Turbo’, though that is based on machine translation. A different name could be used globally, keep that in mind. USB 3.2 Gen 1 is supported here too. Super linear dual stereo speakers are used here, while Spatial Audio is supported. Bluetooth 5.4 is on board, as is Wi-Fi 7, and 5G support.

The OnePlus 12 measures 164.3 x 75.8 x 9.15mm, while it weighs 220 grams. The phone comes in Black, Green, and White color options, as you can see below.

Audio is allegedly coming to WhatsApp’s screen sharing feature

Now that we as a humanity have finally let go of the archaic ways of getting together in person, it’s time for “watch parties” – two or more people play together the same movie (or event, or whatever) and watch it simultaneously at their screens, with one of them broadcasting to the others it via screen sharing.Soon, the latest software to offer this will be WhatsApp. The most popular messaging app will support audio in its screen sharing feature, which debuted this year. At the moment, participants can share their screen when in a WhatsApp video call, but there’s no audio coming from the application(s), so the change is a welcomed one (via Android Authority).

The possibility of audio support for WhatsApp’s screen sharing feature is spotted in an APK teardown that reveals a code string, confirming that audio is indeed coming. The line says: “New: Listen to video and music audio together. When you screen share, audio you play on your device will also be shared with people in your call”.

This line was found in version 2.23.25.20 of the WhatsApp beta app for Android.

The alleged audio support will come in handy in various scenarios – during business calls for presentations, during troubleshooting calls to your parents, and more.

With movies and series, the situation could be a little trickier. Knowing how fierce Netflix has been these last months with the password sharing crackdown, don’t expect that one friend with a Netflix subscription to screen share the latest episode (or movie) on WhatsApp for the rest of you to watch just like that.

For example, Amazon offers its own watch party functionality, but the host and participants all need Prime memberships.

That leaves watch party aficionados with the option to play and share videos that are already stored offline on the device’s storage.

Hidden code reveals that sports fans will soon get a cool new widget for their Android home screens

Hey sports fan, Google is prepping a new home screen widget for Android phones and it will be connected to the Google app. Earlier this year, a new financial widget was offered to those Android users with the Google app installed (which is probably close to 100% of Android users). The widget allows users to track indices, individual stocks, and even cryptocurrency. This widget will be similar although it will show sports scores instead of stock prices.
9to5Google found “hidden code” while taking a deep dive inside the latest version of an Android app recently uploaded to the Play Store. Based on this “hidden code,” the sports widget will follow teams that you follow and will show their upcoming games, games being played at the moment, or past games. Cards are used to show the score of games with the date/time, the score, and the league. Tap on it and a knowledge graph card in Google Search will open.

Users will get to pick which teams to follow from a list on the widgets setting page and recommendations are also made for “games, teams, and leagues based on search activity.” 9to5Google was able to enable the widget using beta version 14.49.38.29 of the Google app.

If you’re a big-time sports fan who watches the scoreboard constantly, you’ll love the sports widget. To see if it is available on your Android phone, long press on an open spot on your Android phone‘s home screen and tap on the widgets option. You’ll see a list of all available widgets; scroll down to Google and tap on it. You’ll see all the widgets available via the Google app including the Financial Watchlist.

Look for a Sports Widget. You can choose a version taking up one column and one that takes up two columns. The two-column widget shows a game in progress at the top. The widget can be resized to cover the entire home screen. Info about a game in-progress can be updated by taping the top-right corner where it says “Last updated.”

If you don’t see the sports widget option, it means that it is not yet available to you. Keep trying from time to time and hopefully you’ll finally see the Sports widget offered to you.

Strava brings free messaging to iOS and Android

Strava made an interesting move this week announcing messaging for iOS and Android users. The popular mobile app for athletes revealed a new feature that will be available for free to all its users, Messaging.

Launched this week, the new feature offers users two options: direct (one-on-one) and group messages. In addition to these key features, Strava’s messaging tool provides more functionality in the forms of even more features:

  • Easily share Activities and Routes to messaging to help assist in coordination and celebration.
  • Message creators can personalize the name of group chats for a more tailored experience.
  • Athletes can bring motivation, hype and even some friendly competition through message reactions, gifs, and replies.

The Messaging feature on Strava can be customized based on the user’s desired experience on the platform. For starters, Strava users will be able to set their preferences on who can invite them to a Group Message or who can message them directly.Also, the feature’s settings will be automatically set based on a user’s profile visibility, but it can be adjusted to receive messages to and from “Following,” “Mutuals,” or “No One,” under settings in the Strava app.

To send a message, simply tap the corresponding button on the profile of the Strava user you wish to message. Keep in mind that while you can send messages to Strava users who follow you, you may not be able to message to a user depending on their privacy controls.
