Google is one of the companies leading the AI race, and Sundar Pichai, the company’s CEO, is at the helm. When talking to Bloomberg’s Emily Chang at APEC (Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation) he talked about potential global impacts of AI technology. During the interview, Pichai compared AI technology to climate change, according to a report.

Why did Sundar Pichai compare AI to climate change?

This seems like a pretty tough comparison. One is the next frontier in technology, and the other is a global phenomenon. Well, it all comes down to responsibility. During the interview, he said that AI’s effects will be felt all over the world. “AI advances will get out to all the countries and so it’s naturally the kind of technology that — I don’t think there’s any unilateral safety to be had.”

That statement is true. At the moment, only the richest countries are affected, as they have access to more technology. Less wealthy countries don’t feel AI’s effects quite as much. However, we expect that to change as the technology becomes more accessible.

What does this have to do with Pichai’s statement? He said that AI technology will be felt worldwide; what else is felt worldwide? Climate change. “In some ways, [AI’s] like climate change and the planet,” he said. “We all share a planet. I think that’s true for AI.” So, the responsibility to make AI safe is a responsibility that every country has. This is why countries need to come together to develop safety guidelines for AI rather than racing to beat out the competition.

Thankfully, we’re seeing efforts

The worst thing that we can do is turn AI into another rat race we need to lead. This could have tremendous consequences. AI is like fire at this point; it could either be constructive or destructive depending on how we use it.

Thankfully, countries are working together to work on guardrails for AI. On Thursday, President Joe Biden reached an agreement with Xi Jinping to discuss AI and its potential effects. Sundar Pichai is right in that we need to develop AI guardrails together. AI technology is only going to get more powerful. If we’re not careful, then it could have some massive consequences.

One big difference between iOS and Android is that the latter operating system will allow users to sideload apps on their devices while iOS doesn’t. When you sideload an app, you are installing it from a third-party app store and Apple doesn’t allow this because it is unable to vet apps that come from outside of the App Store thus increasing the possibility that you might install malware on your iPhone.
Those who complain about iOS being a “walled garden” should understand why Apple doesn’t allow sideloading. However, many of you might feel that you’re old enough to decide whether to take the risk of installing code designed to steal the login to your banking and financial apps. Nonetheless, the three letters that keep Apple CEO Tim Cook up all night, DMA (the EU’s Digital Markets Act) could force Apple to allow sideloading, at least in the 27 EU member countries.
As for Android, to paraphrase the iconic Dr. Ian Malcom (played splendidly by Jeff Goldblum) in Jurassic Park, just because you can sideload apps on Android it doesn’t mean that you should sideload apps on Android. According to News18.com, those words of wisdom come from none other than Sundar Pichai, the CEO of both Alphabet and Google. This past Tuesday, during the U.S. via Google trial, Pichai was testifying and said (under oath, we should point out) that he tells Android users not to sideload apps on their phones.

Pichai said (and may I remind you that he’s under oath), “We don’t want to allow you to completely compromise your phone. It can install malware on your phone. It can really compromise your safety, very significantly.” This, of course, is the reason Apple gives for not allowing sideloading on iOS. Some might say that the difference is that Google is treating Android users as adults capable of making up their own minds.

On the other hand, tech-naive users who might not be familiar with the concept of sideloading or understand what malware can do to their bank account, might be happy to know that Apple is keeping iPhone users from making an unwittingly dangerous choice. This was the late Steve Jobs‘ main concern about the App Store from day one. Considering that apps these days can pass a scan only to be loaded with malware via an update, your best bet is to avoid installing apps from developers that you’re not familiar with.

Ransomware gang files SEC complaint about victim

In what seems to be a new twist on the ransomware theme, the notorious ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware group has filed a complaint with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) about the software company MeridianLink.

ALPHV is one of the most active ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) operators and regularly appears in our monthly ransomware reviews. MeridianLink supplies “digital lending solutions” to banks, credit unions, fintechs, and other financial institutions.

Since September 5, 2023 the SEC has required public companies to disclose within four days all cybersecurity breaches that could impact their bottom lines. Apparently ALPHV is aware of the new rules and in this screenshot of the SEC complaint form it wrote:

“We want to bring to your attention a concerning issue regarding MeridianLink’s compliance with the recently adopted cybersecurity incident disclosure rules.

It has come to our attention that MeridianLink, in light of a significant breach compromising customer data and operational information, has failed to file the requisite disclosure under Item 1.05 of Form 8-K within the stipulated four business days, as mandated by the new SEC rules.”

The referenced item (Form 8-K Item 1.05) states:

“Registrants must disclose any cybersecurity incident they experience that is determined to be material, and describe the material aspects of its:

– Nature, scope, and timing; and

– Impact or reasonably likely impact.

An Item 1.05 Form 8-K must be filed within four business days of determining an incident was material. A registrant may delay filing as described below, if the United States Attorney General (“Attorney General”) determines immediate disclosure would pose a substantial risk to national security or public safety.

Registrants must amend a prior Item 1.05 Form 8-K to disclose any information called for in Item 1.05(a) that was not determined or was unavailable at the time of the initial Form 8-K filing. “

As you can see, there are possible exceptions and for all we know, the investigation into the nature and gravity of the data breach is still ongoing. Or far from as material as ALPHV wants us to believe.

In a statement to databreaches.net MeridianLink  said:

“Safeguarding our customers’ and partners’ information is something we take seriously. MeridianLink recently identified a cybersecurity incident that took place on Nov 10. Upon discovery on the same day, we acted immediately to contain the threat and engaged a team of third-party experts to investigate the incident. Based on our investigation to date, we have identified no evidence of unauthorized access to our production platforms, and the incident has caused minimal business interruption.

We have no further details to offer currently, as our investigation is ongoing.”

Apparently the ransomware operators like to pretend that what they are doing is their civic duty. This tile is posted on the landing page of the gang’s leak site.

Clicking through, we found the screenshot of the form and a non-explanatory statement why they filled the form out.

“Despite this requirement, MeridianLink has not fulfilled this obligation regarding the breach it experienced a week ago. We have therefore reported this non-compliance by MeridianLink, who was involved in a material breach impacting customer data and operational information, for failure to file the required disclosure with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It appears MeridianLink reached out, but we are yet to receive a message on their end. Maybe this was their DFIR, Mandiant, who did so without authorization from their client. Whatever the reason is…..we are giving you 24 hours before we publish the data in its entirety.”

Whatever the reason is behind MeridianLink’s apparent decision not to report the cyber-incident (yet), the action taken by ALPHV certainly is something we haven’t seen before. It may be a warning or an attempt to gain extra leverage. Knowing how hard it can be to determine the scope of a cyberattack in just a few days, we can expect to see this happen more often.

How to avoid ransomware

  • Block common forms of entry. Create a plan for patching vulnerabilities in internet-facing systems quickly; and disable or harden remote access like RDP and VPNs.
  • Prevent intrusions. Stop threats early before they can even infiltrate or infect your endpoints. Use endpoint security software that can prevent exploits and malware used to deliver ransomware.
  • Detect intrusions. Make it harder for intruders to operate inside your organization by segmenting networks and assigning access rights prudently. Use EDR or MDR to detect unusual activity before an attack occurs.
  • Stop malicious encryption. Deploy Endpoint Detection and Response software like Malwarebytes EDR that uses multiple different detection techniques to identify ransomware, and ransomware rollback to restore damaged system files.
  • Create offsite, offline backups. Keep backups offsite and offline, beyond the reach of attackers. Test them regularly to make sure you can restore essential business functions swiftly.
  • Don’t get attacked twice. Once you’ve isolated the outbreak and stopped the first attack, you must remove every trace of the attackers, their malware, their tools, and their methods of entry, to avoid being attacked again.

Instagram could be working on a lock screen shortcut for the Galaxy S24

Lock screen shortcuts are sometimes the quickest way to perform your favorite tasks on your phone. Instead of unlocking your phone and diving into the interface, you can jump right to the app or function you’re after. Samsung has long allowed to to add app shortcuts to your lock screen.

At the moment, you can already set a lock screen shortcut to access the Instagram app. However, if you want to jump right to the Instagram Camera and capture the moment at a moment’s notice, you might be able to if you pick up the Galaxy S24. We have a leaked screenshot showing the splash screen for this feature.

In the screenshot, we see the text “Access the Instagram Camera from your lock screen. Samsung Galaxy S24 users can now turn on a shortcut to Instagram Camera in settings.” Under that, we see the Try it button. The code for this feature might already be in the Instagram app, and it’s just waiting to be activated. We’re not sure at this moment.

This could be a standout feature in the Galaxy S24 Galaxy Unpacked event. Samsung could be planning on holding it earlier in the year compared to this year, so there might not be too much more time to wait.

Google Maps gets a new color palette

We’re all used to the general aesthetic of Google Maps. However, all things must change at some point. According to a new report, Google is rolling out a new updated color palette to Google Maps. This has been in testing for several weeks, so there are people who’ve had this new color palette for quite some time. Now, the company is rolling it out to the rest of its users. Try updating your app to see if you have access to it.

Go to the Google Play Store and find Google Maps. You can also access this screen on most phones by going through the App Info screen. There, if you see the update button, tap it and wait for it to install. If you still don’t see it, then you’ll just want to wait a bit.

Google Maps brings a new color palette

There are some subtle changes to the overall color scheme of the app, and you’ll notice that with the roads first. Before, roads would appear yellow, but now they’ve been replaced with a blueish-gray color. If you’re looking at freeways, you’ll see a darker shade of gray that will make them contrast the other roads.

Other than the roads, there are some other changes. The water is a different shade of blue. It’s closer to teal. Parks are also a lighter shade of green, which makes them a little harder to see, actually.

There was probably no reason to make these changes other than the fact that you have to switch things up every now and then. Other than the colors, there were no other changes. So, there are no functionality changes or added features.

Meta and MediaTek partnership will drive the development of AR glass chips

Recent reports point out that Meta is now in a partnership with MediaTek, the chip manufacturing firm. This partnership aims to drive the production of chips or processors for AR smart glasses. The announcement was made public by a MediaTek executive, Vince Hu, during the company’s annual event for this year.

At the MediaTek Summit 2023, netizens learned that Ray-Ban smart glasses will use a new chip. With these coming chips, Ray-Ban will be able to break the boundaries of the AR industry. The new chips will also come with support for some technology that isn’t currently available on Ray-Ban glasses that are currently retailing.

This is where the chips that will be developed as a result of this new partnership will come into play. MediaTek will work closely with Meta to develop chips that will help take Ray-Ban AR smart glasses ahead of the competition. Future AR glasses that will launch under this partnership will bring features that will make them more usable on an everyday basis.

Users might be able to use these glasses for more than just recording videos, connecting with their phone, and so on. They will be able to perform actions such as scanning QR codes and accessing their content, reading messages on their smartphones and so much more. MediaTek already has a good name for itself in the chip manufacturing industry, from budget performance chips to flagship chips on smartphones.

Google Reveals ‘Reptar’ Vulnerability Threatening Intel Processors

Google has discovered a new security vulnerability in Intel CPUs that could let attackers execute code on vulnerable systems. The vulnerability has been named “Reptar” by Google and affects numerous Intel CPUs, including those utilized in cloud computing environments.

What is Reptar Vulnerability?

Reptar is a side-channel vulnerability tracked as CVE-2023-23583. It allows attackers to leak information from a vulnerable system and use it to steal sensitive data such as credit card numbers, passwords, etc.

The vulnerability was discovered by Google’s Information Security Engineering team, which notified Intel and industry partners about the issue, and mitigations were rolled out before its public disclosure.

How Was Reptar Discovered?

According to Google’s blog post, a company’s security researcher discovered it in the way the CPU interprets redundant prefixes, and if successfully exploited, it allows attackers to bypass the CPU’s security boundaries.

For your information, prefixes allow users to change how instructions behave by disabling/enabling different features. Those prefixes that don’t make sense or conflict with other prefixes are called redundant prefixes. Such prefixes are generally ignored.

How does Reptar work?

Reptar works by exploiting an issue in the way speculative execution is handled by Intel CPUs. Speculative execution is a technique that allows CPUs to execute instructions before being fully validated. Although this technique is time-saving, it can make CPUs vulnerable to side-channel attacks.

The Reptar vulnerability is a serious risk to multi-tenant virtualized environments, where the exploit causes the host machine to crash on a guest machine, resulting in a denial of service to other guest machines connected to the same host. In addition, it could lead to privilege escalation or information disclosure.

In a multi-tenant virtualized environment, multiple tenants share the same physical hardware, so if one tenant is infected with Reptar, the attacker has access to the other tenants’ data through the same vulnerability.

Aubrey Perin, Lead Threat Intelligence Analyst at Qualys, a Foster City, Calif.-based provider of disruptive cloud-based IT, security and compliance solutions commented on the issue stating, “Unmitigated, this bug could be serious as an attacker could start testing to see if there is any order to the seemingly random outputs. As it stands, it sounds more like an oddity that could be used to take systems down.”

Mr Perin further explained that “Without reviewing the catalogue of patches, it’s hard to say that it’s atypical of the bugs usually found. In this case, where it can cause crashes, security teams should definitely prioritize the patch implementation to eliminate the risk of failure.”

“Researchers do find vulnerabilities all the time, often for bounty, and it benefits users when responsible disclosure practices are followed. Google is a very good practitioner of responsible disclosure, and you can often find references to the researcher or organization who disclosed the vulnerability in the notes associated with patches,” he added.

Intel’s Response

Intel has released an advisory to confirm the issue, explaining that the issue was discovered in some Intel processors caused by an error in the CPU’s handling of redundant prefixes. The company has released a patch for the issue. It was assigned a CVSS score of 8.8 and declared a High-security vulnerability.

This CPU vulnerability impacts several Intel desktop, mobile, and server CPUs., including 10th Generation Intel® Core™ Processor Family, 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Processor Scalable Family, Intel® Xeon® D Processor, and 11th Generation Intel® Core Processor Family, and CPUs used in cloud computing environments, etc.

The company is working on a long-term fix. In the meantime, it is advising users to patch their devices immediately.

Risk of Rain will hit the mobile market with a new title

Back in 2013, we got a 2D roguelike called Risk of Rain. It was a popular title that’s seen subsequent releases like a popular 3D sequel. Now, this franchise is hitting the mobile market with an all-new title. It’s called Risk of Rain: Hostile Worlds. It’s going to launch for Android and iOS soon.

In case you’re not familiar with the franchise, Risk of Rain surrounds a handful of survivors of a space freight crash. They wind up on a strange planet full of alien creatures. Also, the creatures just so happen to have a unanimous hatred of you, so your task is to fight your way through these creatures. That’s the core gameplay.

There’s a cast of different characters that you can play as, and each one has a different fighting style, so there’s a bunch of variety to the gameplay. If you want to play these for yourself, the three current titles (Risk of Rain, Risk of Rain 2, and Risk of Rain Returns), are all available to buy on Steam.

Risk of Rain: Hostile Worlds will hit the mobile market soon

This franchise has been available on just about every platform except for mobile. However, that’s going to change with Risk of Rain: Hostile Worlds. This is going to be a 3D roguelike with much the same gameplay as the original. You’re going to choose which character you want to play as and fight your way through hordes of enemies. It’s pretty straightforward in that regard.

As you play, you’ll encounter stronger enemies, which is to be expected. So, in order to counter this, you’ll need to grind and upgrade your character to keep up.

When you play, you’ll choose up to three characters to be in your squad. While you’re in battle, you’re able to switch between the characters, so you’ll be able to swap to characters better suited for the enemies you’re fighting.

Nostalgic folks might be in for a shock

So, this happens just about every time a company brings back a beloved franchise and pushes it to mobile phones. The original game came out in 2013; before the microtransaction craze. Now, in the year 2023, there’s no telling if this game is going to stay true to the older titles or go full gacha mode. At the end of the trailer, we see what looks like a character being summoned.

Summons are a big part of the whole gacha scene. Not to fearmonger, but you should expect some degree of modern mobile game shenanigans with this game. We will find out when this game launches. However, at the moment, we don’t know what that’s going to be.
