Samsung brings S Pen Creator Edition to the US

Samsung has brought the S Pen Creator Edition to the US. Launched alongside the Galaxy Tab S9 series in July, the special edition stylus pen was first released in South Korea last month. It is a more premium solution that is more comfortable to use, allowing for effortless writing and drawing.

S Pen Creator Edition arrives in the US

Samsung has specifically designed the S Pen Creator Edition for people who frequently use the stylus accessory on their Galaxy devices. It works with all S Pen-compatible models in the Galaxy Book, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S, and Galaxy Tab lineups, including the FE series (doesn’t work with Fold series foldables). However, the special edition accessory is bigger than the standard version, so it doesn’t fit in the built-in silo of Galaxy phones.

This is essentially why the device is a separate purchase. Those who don’t find the in-box S Pen comfortable for prolonged use will like the Creator Edition’s ergonomic design. It is lightweight (10.6 grams) and has a grippy surface that is more comfortable to hold. Like the regular S Pen, it supports pressure sensitivity and tilt sensitivity. However, there’s no Bluetooth or a built-in battery here, so Air Commands don’t work.

Samsung ships it with two additional replacement tips. The device has an IPX4 water resistance, which isn’t as strong as the regular S Pen’s IPX8 rating. It also misses out on some other smart features. However, if you have a compatible tablet, the stylus pen magnetically attaches to the back of the device. Additionally, its dedicated button lets you quickly pull up a software trick, like changing the pen style when drawing.

Price and availability

Samsung’s S Pen Creator Edition is now available in the US through the company’s official website as well as some third-party retailers, including Amazon and Best Buy. The accessory costs $99.99, which makes it notably more expensive than the regular S Pen ($60) or the S Pen Foldable Edition ($55). It only comes in white.

The Korean firm has also launched the accessory in a few other markets, including China, New Zealand, and the UK. If you’re interested in it, check Samsung’s official website for your region. You may also find the stylus pen on other retail platforms. The company doesn’t seem to be offering it bundled with supported products, though. It appears to have stopped selling the S Pen Pro, which works with foldables too, through its website.

Veeam Critical Bug Let Attackers Steal NTLM Hashes

Veeam, a Global Leader in Data Protection issued hotfixes to address four vulnerabilities affecting the Veeam ONE IT infrastructure monitoring and analytics platform.

Two of the four vulnerabilities are classified as ‘critical’, while the other two are classified as ‘medium severity’ flaws.

The critical flaws allow remote code execution and steal NTLM Hashes, and the medium-severity issues involve user interaction and have a lesser impact.

Critical Flaws Addressed

A critical vulnerability tracked as CVE-2023-38547 in Veeam ONE with a CVSS base score of 9.9 allows an unauthenticated user to obtain information about the SQL server connection used by Veeam ONE to access its configuration database, an advisory published today stated.

“This may lead to remote code execution on the SQL server hosting the Veeam ONE configuration database,” the company said in its advisory.

Because of a flaw in Veeam ONE identified as CVE-2023-38548 with a CVSS base score of 9.8, anyone with access to the Veeam ONE Web Client can get the NTLM hash of the account used by the Veeam ONE Reporting Service.

Medium Severity Flaws Addressed

A flaw classified as CVE-2023-38549 with a CVSS base score of 4.5 in Veeam ONE permits a user with the Veeam ONE Power user role to gain the access token of a user with the Veeam ONE Administrator role using XSS.  

“The criticality of this vulnerability is reduced as it requires interaction by a user with the Veeam ONE Administrator role”, the company said.

Affected versions are Veeam ONE 11, 11a, 12.

In Veeam ONE, a vulnerability classified as CVE-2023-41723 and a CVSS base score of 4.3 permits the Dashboard Schedule to be viewed by a user with the Veeam ONE Read-Only User role.

“The criticality of this vulnerability is reduced because the user with the Read-Only role is only able to view the schedule and cannot make changes”, the company said.

Affected versions are Veeam ONE 11, 11a, 12.

Patches Released

Google Maps gets a sleek navigation facelift

Google Maps on Android Auto is receiving a redesign update, which includes refinement to the navigation button layouts. The changes are currently available in Google Maps v11.104.0100 and Android Auto v10.8 through the Play Store.

The redesigned navigation section in Google Maps brings several key changes to the forefront. What it means is that it might not be available to all users immediately. Additionally, Google resolved an issue in June 2023 that prevented users from accessing Maps on their phones when using Android Auto in their vehicles.

As Instagram hits 1 million paid subscriptions, Meta rolls out more ways for creators to make money

Being a content creator on social media is a new profession, with stats showing that about 200 million people consider themselves creators. A big part of them prefer Instagram as the platform to share content and earn money. Instagram’s monetization program, Instagram Subscriptions, allows creators to make money by sharing exclusive content with their followers.In a recent blog post, Meta revealed that since broadening access to more creators earlier this year, there are now over 1 million active subscriptions through Instagram Subscriptions. Most recently, subscriptions were introduced for creators in an additional 35 countries.

However, 1 million is not such a huge number, considering Instagram has more than 1.2 billion users, which probably is why Meta is introducing new ways for creators to attract subscribers and earn more money.

The tech giant is currently testing an exclusive holiday bonus on Instagram, available by invitation only for creators in the United States, South Korea, and Japan. This holiday bonus goal is to reward creators for showcasing their creativity through reels and photos.

A select group of creators will receive invitations to test this new bonus until the end of the year. Those who receive an invitation can activate the holiday bonus to initiate monetization. Earnings for creators will be determined based on the number of plays for reels and views for photos during the bonus period.

To help creators expand their subscriber communities even more, Meta has introduced new promotional tools like ​​featuring the Subscribe button when followers see content in the Feed. To prove that subscriptions work, the company gives an example with creator Kimberley Haberly, who says her subscription is generating approximately AUD 31,000 per month, thanks to her 3,000+ subscribers (not too shabby, if you ask me).

 

Right now, Meta is giving creators a break by waiving subscription fees for both Instagram and Facebook, and it promises to send creators a heads-up with a six-month notice before making any changes to this approach.

Subscriptions aren’t just an Instagram thing; you can find them on Facebook too. Meta’s on a roll, expanding access to millions more creators in the upcoming months. It is adding more ways for followers to subscribe, like through Reels and Stories on Facebook. Plus, creators can now offer free 30-day subscription trials to their fans.

The company is also rolling out more control over pricing so creators can change the price of their subscriptions over time. It is also making it easier for creators to participate in ads by showing additional ad eligibility information when creating Instagram Stories.

On the flip side, if you are fed up with the barrage of ads on your Instagram and Facebook feeds and reside in the EU, the good news is that recently Meta introduced ad-free subscription plans.

A new chapter for Malwarebytes

Since I started Malwarebytes 15 years ago the threat landscape has changed. Our offerings have evolved. And now the next chapter of our journey begins today.

My first cyber “combatant” was an early form of adware running amok on my family’s computer. Google Pixel 8 & Pixel 8 Pro get first post-launch update

The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are getting their first post-launch update. Android 14 with the November security patch is hitting the two devices, and some fixes are included in it too.

Do note that this update will fix the storage access issue you may have experienced. It does the same for the Pixel 6, Pixel Fold, and the Pixel Tablet. Furthermore, it also fixes the green flashes on the Pixel 7 Pro’s display.

Even the Pixel 8 series is getting a specific display fix. If you’ve experienced “screen jerkiness when touch registration becomes imprecise”, well, Google has fixed that too with this update.

What else? Well, a fix for NFC-related problems has also been released. NFC tended to occasionally cause-related services to have instability in some conditions.

You will no longer experience issues if apps request apps that are no longer installed. That bug has been squashed. Disappearing desktop icons are a thing of the past too. That tended to happen for some, when unlocking the device. The wallpaper won’t misalign anymore either.

A bunch of other Pixel phones are getting the November 2023 update

Everything we’ve listed above includes the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Those are all the fixes that Google mentioned in its changelog. This update is also rolling out to other Pixels as we speak. It’s rolling out to the Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 5a 5G, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, and the Pixel 8 Pro.

At the time of writing this article, just the global builds of this update were available, so keep that in mind. Your phone will notify you once the update is available. You can always manually check too, via the Settings.

Dimensity 9300 shows better efficiency than Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Yesterday, MediaTek launched the Dimensity 9300 to take on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. On paper, the two chips look incredibly powerful and efficient. Both solutions are built on TSMC’s 4nm fabrication process and feature the latest ARM CPU technology. However, the former has no efficiency cores while the latter has a couple. Despite that, the new Dimensity processor appears to have a superior power efficiency than the Snapdragon.

The Dimensity 9300 features one ARM Cortex-X4 prime CPU core clocked at 3.25GHz, three more Cortex-X4 cores at 2.85GHz, and four Cortex-A720 mid cores at 2.0GHz. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has one Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.30GHz, three Cortex-A720 cores at 3.15GHz, two more Cortex-A720 cores at 2.96GHz, and two Cortex-A520 efficiency cores at 2.26GHz.

In a benchmark test, the MediaTek chip delivered better power efficiency than Qualcomm’s. It reached the same performance level with almost 33 percent less power. At constant power, the performance was up by about ten percent. Both CPU and GPU tests showed a similar trend, with the Dimensity 9300 offering better efficiency than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The former’s power consumption at peak performance is substantially less than the latter.

Performance-wise, MediaTek’s latest flagship SoC appears to be giving a tough fight to Apple’s A17 Pro, which powers the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. As expected, its multi-core performance is unmatched by rivals. That’s the benefit of the so-called “All Big Core” design. However, with no efficiency cores, its idle power consumption appears to be significantly high.

The Dimensity 9300 may also be overkill for less taxing tasks, leading to an abnormal power drain. These benchmark tests were likely conducted in a controlled environment using pre-production devices. There’s no telling if the test setup had thermal limits in place. If not, the chip could flex its muscles and perform at its peak capacity with no restrictions. The real-life performance may not be the same as we saw in these results.

There are concerns about heating issues

Months before MediaTek unveiled the Dimensity 9300, there were reports that the chip gets abnormally hot when running at full capacity. It’s unclear if the company has worked on this. It may be able to keep the temperature in check by throttling the performance. However, that means the chip won’t deliver the same performance it’s expected to deliver. Time will tell whether MediaTek’s “All Big Core” design is a game changer or if the decision backfires. The Dimensity 9300 will start shipping inside Android flagships later this month.

Telegram update brings the ability to host giveaways

IBM X-Force Discovers Gootloader Malware Variant- GootBot

The original Gootloader malware was used by numerous threat groups, including ransomware affiliates and in additional payloads like SystemBC and IcedID.

IBM X-Force has discovered a new variant of the notorious Gootloader malware, dubbed GootBot. This malware performs stealthy lateral movement, which complicates the detection or blocking of the campaign within enterprise networks.

According to the blog post authored by Golo Mühr and Ole Villadsen, the Gootloader group implements their custom bot in the latter stages of this attack chain to evade detection, using off-the-shelf tools for establishing C2 communication, such as RDP or CobaltStrike.

Gootloader malware was initially used only as an initial access tool and evolved considerably over time to include GootBot, a lightweight obfuscated PS script. It is downloaded after the Gootloader infection and receives commands via C2 through encrypted PowerShell scripts.

For your information, the Gootloader group (aka UNC2565 or Hive0127) first surfaced in 2014 and focused more on SEO poisoning techniques and compromised WordPress websites to distribute the Gootkit-based Gootloader malware. Tanium’s director of endpoint security research, Melissa Bischoping, explained how SEO poisoning works.

“SEO poisoning drives users to malicious payloads by manipulating the search results for key terms. Most security awareness training focuses heavily on phishing and other methods where an attacker sends something to the user. There’s a false sense of security that people place in search result top rankings and an outdated mindset that the lock on the address bar means a site is safe.”

Hackread.com has been following the Gootloader group’s activities since its emergence. The group frequently targets business-related online searchers like queries about legal contracts, creating legit-looking websites, and positioning them on the first page of search results. Once the user visits the page, they entice them into downloading archive files, which appear harmless and relevant to their queries but actually contain Gootloader malware.

In March 2021, Sophos cybersecurity firm confirmed that Gootloader has evolved into a sophisticated loader framework from serving as an initial access point, revealing that its delivery method had expanded beyond the Gootkit malware family. As an initial access point, Gootloader malware was used by numerous threat groups, including ransomware affiliates and in additional payloads like SystemBC and IcedID.  

GootBot is a novel Gootloader variant. It is a PowerShell payload encapsulating a single C2 server address. Its strings use a replacement key to conduct mild obfuscation. The malware, just like Gootloader, sends a GET request to the C2 server, requesting PowerShell tasks, and gets a string comprising a Base64-encoded payload.

The last 8 digits of the code are the task’s name. It then decodes the payload and injects it into the script block before executing it. The payload runs asynchronously, maintaining a default beaconing interval of 60 seconds. When it receives a C2 task, the next loop iteration starts, and for completed jobs, the results are returned.

GootBot is designed for lateral movement within the network, noted X-Force researchers. Its C2 infrastructure can quickly generate numerous GootBot payloads for distribution, each having a unique C2 address, and can cause multiple infections of the same host. It also runs a reconnaissance script and contains a unique GootBot ID for the host.

This effective malware lets attackers swiftly propagate across the compromised network to deploy additional malicious software. Unlike Gootloader, GootBot spreads through infected domains to reach the domain controller. This indicates a shift in attack tactics from Gootloader operators and enhances the success rate of post-exploitation stages, including Gootloader-based ransomware affiliate activity.

The malware is capable of extracting domain user name, and OS details from the registry key, checks for x86 dir and int ptr size if 64bit architecture is detected, and obtains information about domain controllers from registry and ENV var, SID, local IP address, hostname, and running processes. The data gets formatted with the specified ID.

The emergence of the GootBot variant highlights that attackers are employing sophisticated methods to stay undetected and spread laterally across the network. Lateral-movement scripts are possible through various techniques, such as WinRM, SMB, and WinAPI calls, to spread the payload to other hosts.

Organizations must implement advanced security mechanisms, including endpoint detection and response (EDR) solutions and regularly updating software to prevent the threat. Bugcrowd cybersecurity firm’s founder and chief strategy officer, Casey Ellis, shared the following statement with Hackread.com regarding the current Gootloader campaign.

“This all strikes me as a very organized and thoughtful initial access broker (IAB). Their watering-hole style deployment of malicious SEO isn’t particularly targeted, however, it suits the opportunistic attack model of an IAB quite well. For defenders, it’s important to remember that organized cybercrime is continuing to evolve, stratify, and mature and that the threat actor behaviours now include this type of long, wide game.”

Keeper Security’s CEO and co-founder, Darren Guccione, in an exclusive statement shared with Hackread.com, noted that it is hard for innocent users to distinguish between authentic and fabricated search results, which makes SEO poisoning so successful.

“Innocent people who are not trained on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and SEO-related attack vectors, including SEO poisoning, generally focus on the aesthetics of the search results page they are familiar with such as the domain name and the logos displayed. Often, threat actors will use language like “Official Website” to lure people into clicking a dangerous link or visiting a spoofed site that can download Gootloader or other malware onto their device.”

However, some scrutiny can prove beneficial in detecting malicious websites, said Guccione. “Phony or spoofed websites will usually have a different website address than the official company name and can also use different domain extensions than the one for the legitimate website. The majority of popular websites use the domain extension .com,” explained Guccione. 

“If you visit a site, pay special attention to the domain itself and if it appears to be abnormally long or unrecognizable based on your normal search activity, it’s best to ignore it – and not click on any link. Online tools such as a Google Transparency Report can also be used to determine whether a site is safe.”

Google Photos is set to get the ‘Photo Stack’ feature

This coming Google Photo Stack feature aims to help users to manage the photos on their app. Already, the Google Photos app helps users to better organize their photos for easy access. Well, there is still the challenge of wading through lots of similar photos that were taken in the same period.

Lots of users will view this as being stressful, especially when these similar photos come in the way of their search for other photos. To solve this issue and declutter the Google Photos app, the feature in consideration in this article is preparing to roll out. Once this feature rolls out, it’ll group all similar photos taken within the same period into one big stack.

From this stack, users will be able to access other images that are similar to the stack’s header image. Each photo of stacks will have a header image that will be on display on the Google Photos app interface. This will help users identify each Photo Stack for easy access to the photos within the stack.

To help users identify a stack, Google will employ the use of a sign similar to a minimize button (a little square overlapping another). Tapping on photos with this sign at their top right-hand corner will pull up other photos within the stack. Users can then access each photo within the stack instead of seeing all of them on the Google Photos app interface.

Once this feature is available, users might need to activate it from the Google Photos app setting. From the settings page, they need to access preferences and then activate the Stack similar photos option. There might be some major improvements from the beta testing version of this feature once it rolls out for public usage.
