Meta is taking steps to stop misinformation during the Israel-Hamas conflict

0
[ad_1]

Following Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel, it’s no secret that there has been a flood of misinformation on social media apps like Instagram and Facebook, with people supporting one side or the other. However, this Israel-Hamas conflict has made moderation even more difficult for Meta, which claims it has seen a substantial surge in misinformation and subsequent removal of content that violated its Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy in Hebrew and Arabic.

While the company did not explicitly reference the European Union (EU) or its Digital Services Act, this report aligns with an open letter from European Commissioner Thierry Breton, which highlighted the need to combat disinformation and illegal content on social media apps. Furthermore, the commissioner has also sent letters to other social media companies, including X, highlighting the urgent need to address this situation.

Meta’s measures

In response to the spread of misinformation, Meta has implemented various measures, including the creation of a dedicated Special Operations Center staffed with experts proficient in Hebrew and Arabic and the Israel-Hamas conflict. This specialized team aims to bolster the company’s capability to promptly identify and address content that violates its policies, including violent and graphic content, hate speech, harassment, and activities promoting harm.

Additionally, Meta emphasized that it has already taken down over 795,000 pieces of content within the three days following October 7th for policy violations. Moreover, the company has also banned Hamas, the group behind the attacks, from all of Meta’s platforms.

Furthermore, Meta is actively blocking hashtags and giving priority to reports related to the crisis on Facebook and Instagram Live. Lastly, the company is “temporarily expanding” its violence and incitement policy, leading to the removal of posts that identify hostages, even if the intent is to raise awareness.

However, despite these efforts, concerns have been raised by employees of Meta’s Trusted Partner Program, responsible for content removal, regarding the company’s slow response to reports, sometimes taking months.

Google’s Pixel 8 Pro goes through JerryRigEverything’s Torture test

0
[ad_1]

The Google Pixel 8 Pro was announced last week, and it’s now available to buy at many retailers including Best Buy. But one thing that wasn’t answered yet was, how well does this stand up to some torture? Well, thankfully Zack from JerryRigEverything is here to do a durability test on the new Google Pixel 8 Pro.

This durability test shows us how well the Pixel 8 Pro can stand up to all sorts of things, including being bent. Google hasn’t always been the best in the bend test, but with the Pixel 8 Pro it did pass. Nothing really happened when he tried to bend it, other than some creeks from an old wooden chair. That’s quite good for Google, and it did fair a lot better than the iPhone 15 Pro Max did, thankfully.

Why these durability tests matter

Many wonder why these durability tests are even a thing. Since you’re unlikely to bend your phone, or light it on fire, or really anything like that. But the thing is, we never really know what might happen to our phones here. We could end up sitting on them, or drop them near an open flame. So it’s good to see whether or not these phones can stand up to that torture test.

And with Google promising to update the Pixel 8 series for the next 7 years – until 2030. Many are likely going to be keeping their phones for quite some time. So doing a durability test like this on a phone that will still be updated in seven years is a pretty big deal.

You can check out the full torture test, and see how well the Google Pixel 8 Pro did, in the video below. It did actually perform quite well, especially in the bend test. With almost no movement at all. Which is pretty rare for a Google phone.

Threads is rolling out a feature that took Twitter a Decade to do

0
[ad_1]

Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg announced on Threads today that it is rolling out the ability to Edit Threads today. As well as posting Voice Threads. And it’s available on both iOS and Android, as well as the web, right now.

The Voice Threads doesn’t appear to be live just yet, at least not for me. But the ability to edit is available. If you’re not seeing it on your device, make sure to close the app and swipe it out of memory and then re-open it. I was only seeing it on one phone and not the other til I did this.

So how does the Edit button work on Threads? Well, basically the same as it does on Twitter or X. Once you post something on Threads, you can then go through tap on the three dots in the corner. You’ll see an option for “Edit”. There’s also a timer next to that, because you can only edit the Thread for the next five minutes.

Threads has taken a different approach, to edited Threads however. Instead of letting you see older versions of the same Thread, you will see an icon next to the three dots – that looks like a pen drawing a circle – which tells you that this post was edited when you click on it. And that’s it. No option to see what the original Thread was. It’s an interesting choice, but probably the best one.

Threads continues to roll out features iteratively

Since Threads launched back in July, Meta has continued to roll out more and more features to the service. When it did launch, there was quite a bit missing. And well, there still is. For instance, search only worked for finding users, not posts. That is now available, though it is still limited.

It’s a little surprising to see that the Edit button came this soon however. I would have expected it to be a bit further down on Threads list of features to add. We do know that they are working on a new Trending Topics page, as it was leaked by Threads engineers themselves, on Threads.

A lot of these features are server-side, so they are just waiting for a flip to be flipped, over at Meta.

YouTube Takes on Ad Blockers with Warning Pop-Ups

0
[ad_1]

YouTube has been actively displaying pop-up warnings to users who have ad blockers installed on their browsers, urging them to disable them.

YouTube has recently started showing a pop-up message to users using ad blockers, warning them that ad blockers are not allowed on YouTube and asking them to either disable their ad blocker or subscribe to YouTube Premium.

This is a significant change for YouTube, as it has previously allowed users to use ad blockers without any restrictions. However, YouTube is facing increasing competition from other video streaming platforms, such as Netflix and Hulu, which are all ad-free. In order to remain competitive, YouTube needs to find ways to increase its revenue, and cracking down on ad blockers is one way to do that.

YouTube Cracks Down on Ad Blockers
Screenshot of the message displayed by YouTube to encourage users to disable ad blockers on YouTube (Screenshot credit: Hackread.com)

It’s worth noting that the United States CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) strongly recommends that users use ad blockers on their web browsers as a precautionary measure against ‘malvertising.’

The decision to show the ad blocker pop-up has been met with mixed reactions from users. Some users are frustrated that YouTube is trying to prevent them from using ad blockers, while others understand that YouTube needs to make money in order to keep operating.

It is important to note that YouTube’s terms of service do not allow users to use ad blockers. However, there are many popular ad blockers that still work on YouTube. It is possible that YouTube will continue to crack down on ad blockers in the future, but for now, users can still use them to block ads on YouTube.

What does this mean for users?

If you are a YouTube user who uses an ad blocker, you will now see a pop-up message when you try to watch a video. The pop-up message will give you the option to disable your ad blocker or subscribe to YouTube Premium.

If you choose to disable your ad blocker, you will be able to watch videos without seeing any ads. However, if you choose to keep your ad blocker enabled, you can only watch three videos before you are blocked from watching any more videos.

What can users do?

There are a few things that users can do about the YouTube ad blocker pop-up:

  • Disable your ad blocker for YouTube. If you don’t mind seeing ads, you can disable your ad blocker for YouTube. To do this, simply click on the ad blocker icon in your browser and select the option to disable it for YouTube.
  • Use a different ad blocker. There are many different ad blockers available, so if one ad blocker is not working on YouTube, you can try using another one.
  • Subscribe to YouTube Premium. If you want to watch videos without ads, you can subscribe to YouTube Premium. YouTube Premium also offers other benefits, such as the ability to download videos and play them in the background.
  • Ignore the pop-up. You can also simply ignore the pop-up and continue using YouTube with your ad blocker enabled. However, YouTube may eventually start blocking users from watching videos if they continue to use ad blockers.

Here’s how to allow ads on YouTube videos

Like any other website, you can add YouTube.com to your allowlist. Here’s how to do it on AdBlock, Adblock Plus, uBlock Origin, and other ad blockers:

YouTube Cracks Down on Ad Blockers

The trend of pay-and-use services is on the rise, particularly following Elon Musk’s significant actions on Twitter (Now X). He introduced a new process for obtaining a verification badge, available to those willing to pay. Musk also restricted various features, such as 2FA, DMs, and tweet editing, to a limited user group.

Meanwhile, Facebook is actively developing a paid subscription service for Facebook and Instagram, which would offer users a blue checkmark for a monthly fee. It remains uncertain whether META, Facebook’s parent company, will also curtail free features for paid users or maintain the current access for all.

All recent Galaxy foldables are getting October update in the US

0
[ad_1]

Samsung‘s October update is now available for all recent Galaxy foldables in the US. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 started getting the latest security patch last week. The company is now pushing it to the 2022 and 2021 lineups as well, i.e. the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3.

The October update rolls out to 3rd, 4th, and 5th-gen Galaxy foldables

The US versions of the fifth-gen Galaxy foldables were the first to receive Samsung’s October 2023 SMR (Security Maintenance Release) globally. The company pushed the update to both carrier-locked and unlocked variants of the new Fold and Flip models last week. It has since been expanding the rollout to international markets.

Meanwhile, the last two generations of Galaxy foldables are now picking up the latest security patch in the US. The update is rolling out with the firmware build number F926USQS4GWI3 for the carrier-locked Galaxy Z Fold 3. That for the unlocked variant is F926U1UES4GWI3. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is receiving it with the build numbers F711USQS5GWI3 and F711U1UES5GWI3, respectively.

For the Galaxy Z Fold 4, the new build numbers are F936USQS3DWI1 and F936U1UES3DWI1, respectively. Finally, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is getting build numbers F721USQS3DWI1 and F721U1UES3DWI1 for the carrier-locked and unlocked variants, respectively. None of these foldables is receiving new features or functional improvements with this update. Samsung is only pushing this month’s security fixes to the devices.

Note that these foldables are also getting the latest SMR in international markets, including in Europe and Latin America. The build number may vary according to the region, but the changelog mostly remains the same. The update brings security fixes that are part of Google’s latest security patch for Android devices. Samsung has added a few Galaxy-specific fixes too.

Overall, the October SMR for Galaxy devices patches 46 vulnerabilities, at least two of which are confirmed to be critical flaws. If you’re using any of these foldables or any other Samsung phone and have yet to receive the latest update, you can check for it from the Settings app.

All of these Samsung phones will get the Android 14 update

This might be the last Android 13-based update for some of these Galaxy foldables if not all. Samsung is preparing to push Android 14 to all of them, with the rollout expected to begin as early as this month. It could take a while before the new Android version reaches all eligible models, but the company should push it to all flagship models before the end of the year. We will keep you posted.

The core issue with Bitcoin

0
[ad_1]

Bitcoin, the groundbreaking digital currency, has revolutionized the financial world. But with its rise, various concerns, from environmental impacts to security issues, have emerged, questioning its sustainability and potential implications. Understanding Bitcoin’s challenges requires comprehensive research and staying updated with the latest trading strategies. The Bitcoin trading website focused on sharing crypto news is where people get information about bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

The Core Issue: Environmental Concerns

Bitcoin, despite its pioneering position in the digital currency world and the revolutionary promise of its underlying blockchain technology, is increasingly coming under scrutiny for its environmental implications. A central concern hinges on Bitcoin’s energy consumption. The decentralized nature of Bitcoin and its reliance on miners to validate transactions mean that vast amounts of computational power are required. In real terms, the energy consumed by the Bitcoin network has, at times, surpassed the energy usage of entire countries.

Beyond just energy consumption, the conversation naturally progresses to the carbon footprint of Bitcoin. After all, the source of energy is a determining factor in how much CO2 is released into the atmosphere. Many Bitcoin mining operations, in their quest for cheaper electricity, have historically been based in regions where coal-fired power plants dominate the energy landscape. The resultant CO2 emissions from these mining farms have placed Bitcoin’s carbon footprint on par with some of the more carbon-intensive industries in the world.

However, it’s essential to recognize that the Bitcoin community and many miners are not blind to these concerns. A counterargument that often emerges is Bitcoin’s potential role in driving the push towards renewable energy. The narrative suggests that as the Bitcoin industry grows and matures, the emphasis on sustainability becomes more pronounced. There are stories of mining farms relocating to regions with abundant hydroelectric power or miners investing in solar panels to offset their reliance on non-renewable energy.

To truly grasp the significance of the environmental concerns surrounding Bitcoin, one needs to weigh them against the digital currency’s benefits. The promise of decentralized finance, increased financial inclusivity, and a potential hedge against traditional financial systems’ vulnerabilities remains strong. But for many, the question is simple: At what cost? As the global community becomes more environmentally conscious and as efforts intensify to combat climate change, the environmental implications of Bitcoin become an issue that neither its proponents nor its skeptics can ignore. The challenge for the future will be to find a balance, where the innovative potential of cryptocurrencies can be harnessed without undermining the collective endeavor to foster a sustainable planet.

Other Notable Concerns

Beyond the pressing environmental issues linked to Bitcoin, there exists a myriad of other challenges and concerns that have been voiced by critics, investors, and even some proponents. A prominent concern is the financial stability associated with Bitcoin, primarily due to its volatility. This digital currency has become synonymous with wild price fluctuations, driven by a combination of speculative trading, external news, regulatory developments, and broader market sentiments. For everyday investors, this volatility translates into substantial financial risk.

Additionally, the intersection of Bitcoin with global regulations has always been complex. Various governments grapple with how to categorize, regulate, or even ban Bitcoin transactions and mining. The decentralized essence of Bitcoin challenges traditional financial systems and regulators, often leading to dilemmas. For instance, while some countries embrace Bitcoin as an innovative financial solution, others see it as a potential threat to economic stability, pushing them to impose stringent regulations or outright bans.

Furthermore, security remains an enduring concern. Despite the inherently secure design of blockchain, the broader Bitcoin ecosystem, including exchanges and wallets, has been plagued by high-profile hacks and security breaches. Millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin have been stolen, leaving investors and traders at significant losses. These incidents, often magnified by the media, raise doubts about the digital currency’s infrastructure and the maturity of security protocols in place.

Lastly, the potential for Bitcoin’s misuse cannot be overlooked. Its semi-anonymous nature has made it a currency of choice for a variety of illegal activities, from illicit drug trades on the dark web to more complex operations like money laundering. While it’s essential to note that fiat currencies are also used for such activities, the digital nature of Bitcoin and the challenges in tracing its transactions amplify concerns about its potential for enabling criminal enterprises.

Conclusion

While Bitcoin offers unparalleled financial opportunities and innovation, it’s imperative to address and navigate the multifaceted challenges it presents to ensure its enduring relevance in a constantly evolving financial landscape.

HONOR uveils Magic Vs2 foldable, it’s even lighter than Magic V2

0
[ad_1]

HONOR has announced a new foldable smartphone in China, the Magic Vs2. This handset is actually even lighter than the Magic V2 that preceded it. That being said, the Magic Vs2 is inferior to the Magic V2, but it’s still immensely powerful.

The HONOR Magic Vs2 is official, and it’s even lighter than the Magic V2

The device looks a lot like the Magic V2. You’ll notice thin bezels around both of its displays, and there’s also a display camera hole on both of them. Three vertically aligned cameras sit on the back. They’re all a part of the same camera island, and look similar to what the Magic V2 offers.

This phone is technically a successor to the Magic Vs, which launched in November last year. It comes with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, while the Magic V2 includes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

I don’t usually talk about the measurements so early in announcement articles, but in this one, it makes sense. The Magic Vs2 measures 157.5 x 146.2 x 5.1mm when unfolded. When folded, it measures 157.5 x 74.4 x 10.7mm. It weighs 229 grams.

The Magic V2 is still thinner, though

So, it’s not as thin as the Magic V2 when folded (9.9mm), but it’s lighter, as the Magic V2 weighs 231 or 237 grams, depending on the model. They’re very similar in every other way, though, design-wise.

A side-facing fingerprint scanner is included on the phone, 12GB and 16GB RAM models were announced. Those two variants come with 256GB and 512GB of internal storage.

Both of its displays have a high PWM dimming

A 7.92-inch main display has a 2344 x 2156 resolution, and it’s an OLED panel. This is an LTPO display with a 120Hz refresh rate, and 3,840Hz PWM dimming. HDR10+ is supported, and it has a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits.

The external display measures 6.43 inches, and we’re looking at a fullHD+ (2376 x 1060) panel here. It’s an OLED display too, and also an LTPO panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. A 3,840Hz PWM dimming is included here too. This panel goes up to 2,500 nits of peak brightness.

A 50-megapixel main camera (f/1.9 aperture) sits on the back, along with a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (f/2.2 aperture, macro option). The third camera on the back is a 20-megapixel telephoto unit (2.5x optical zoom, f/2.4 aperture). On the front, you’ll find a 16-megapixel unit (f/2.2 aperture) on both displays.

66W charging is included

A 5,000mAh battery sits on the inside, and supports 66W wired charging. Android 13 comes pre-installed, with Magic UI 7.2. Bluetooth 5.2 is included here, while there are two SIM card slots you can use. Stereo speakers are also included, of course, as is an infrared sensor.

The device comes in Coral Purple (plain leather), Glacier Blue (feather fiber), and Velvet Black (feather fiber) color options. The phone is already available to pre-order in China. It remains to be seen if it will launch globally, its predecessor did.

How Bitcoin cash aims to be the peer-to-peer electronic cash

0
[ad_1]

Bitcoin Cash, a direct offshoot of Bitcoin, promises a seamless peer-to-peer electronic cash system. However, with its evolution come inherent challenges that draw both supporters and skeptics. When you’re looking for an elite platform to manage your crypto assets, consider the possibilities with Profit Edge.

How Bitcoin Cash Addresses the Peer-to-Peer Vision

Bitcoin Cash emerged from a turbulent period in Bitcoin’s history, where the original vision of Bitcoin as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system was perceived by some to be sidelined by scalability issues. These issues were leading to slower transaction times and escalating fees, impacting Bitcoin’s promise of quick, affordable, decentralized monetary exchanges.

Bitcoin Cash, right from its inception, prioritized a solution to this scalability conundrum. It opted for a bigger block size compared to Bitcoin, which meant that each block on the BCH chain could hold more transactions. This larger block size is at the heart of BCH’s vision. It ensures that transactions are processed faster, reducing the time users have to wait for their transactions to be confirmed. Moreover, by accommodating more transactions in a single block, the fees associated with these transactions remain low. This is crucial for everyday microtransactions, making it feasible to buy a cup of coffee with BCH without being burdened by exorbitant fees.

Decentralization, a key feature that ensures a truly peer-to-peer nature of any cryptocurrency, has also been a focal point for Bitcoin Cash. By advocating for wider adoption and usability, BCH aims for a more decentralized distribution of nodes and miners. This wider distribution not only makes the network more resilient against potential attacks but also sticks to the ethos of a democratized financial system where power isn’t concentrated.

On the matter of usability, Bitcoin Cash has made significant strides in fostering adoption. The development community around BCH has emphasized creating user-friendly wallet interfaces and functionalities, ensuring that even those who aren’t tech-savvy can participate in the BCH ecosystem. Furthermore, BCH has seen a surge in real-world applications, with many merchants globally accepting BCH as a mode of payment. This drives home the coin’s primary objective: to serve as practical, everyday electronic cash.

In essence, Bitcoin Cash, through its various modifications and emphasis on certain attributes, has set itself on a trajectory that aligns closely with the original aspiration of a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. It aims to create a world where transactions are quick, affordable, decentralized, and accessible to all, reaffirming the democratic principles upon which cryptocurrencies were built.

Potential Challenges and Criticisms of Bitcoin Cash

In the world of cryptocurrency, no project, regardless of its ambitions or technical prowess, is immune to challenges and criticisms. Bitcoin Cash, despite its forward momentum, has encountered its share of skepticism.

One of the more pronounced debates surrounding Bitcoin Cash is its comparison with other cryptocurrencies, particularly Bitcoin (BTC). Critics often argue that while Bitcoin Cash might offer lower transaction fees and faster transaction times due to its larger block size, it potentially sacrifices security for scalability. A larger block size could, theoretically, lead to more centralized mining operations, given the increased resources required to mine bigger blocks. This could put the network at risk from a variety of attack vectors that a more decentralized network might be better equipped to handle.

Another frequently voiced concern is the very thing that makes Bitcoin Cash distinct: its block size. While increasing block size might offer a temporary solution to scalability, some argue that it’s not a sustainable long-term strategy. As blocks get bigger, so do the demands on storage, bandwidth, and processing power. This could push smaller miners out of the network, leading to increased centralization. And in the crypto universe, centralization is often synonymous with increased vulnerability.

The debate around centralization doesn’t end with just mining. Some critics express concerns over the perceived centralization in decision-making within the Bitcoin Cash community. They argue that a few influential figures or groups have disproportionate sway over the direction of Bitcoin Cash, which could lead to conflicts of interest or decisions that aren’t in the best interest of the broader community.

Lastly, adaptability remains a potential challenge for Bitcoin Cash. The cryptocurrency landscape is dynamic and ever-evolving. New solutions to scalability, security, and decentralization are continually being proposed and tested. For Bitcoin Cash to maintain its relevance and competitive edge, it needs to be agile and open to incorporating innovations that align with its vision of peer-to-peer electronic cash.

Conclusion

While Bitcoin Cash offers unique solutions to cryptocurrency challenges, it’s essential to critically examine its trajectory to gauge its potential in the ever-evolving digital currency landscape.
