A red variant of the OPPO Find N3 appeared online, and the phone has a vegan leather backplate. In the images that appeared, the phone’s thickness and weight also got revealed.

Two images appeared, to be more accurate. The first one shows the phone’s back, and right side, while it is sitting on a weight scale. The phone seems to weigh 244 grams, which is a bit more than its considerably smaller predecessor, the OPPO Find N2 (233 grams).

The second image above, as you can see, measures the phone’s thickness (not including the camera bump). The device is 12.4mm thick, which means it’s thinner than the Find N2. The OPPO Find N2 measures 14.6mm.

The HONOR Magic V2 will remain the thinnest book-style foldable

The thinnest book-style foldable in the business is the HONOR Magic V2 at 9.9mm. The Magic Vs2 is the lightest, however, at 229 grams. So the Find N3 won’t exactly beat it in those two categories, but it has a lot going for it. Also, it will be thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and much lighter than the Google Pixel Fold.

That being said, the OPPO Find N3 and OnePlus Open are said to sport the exact same hardware. So, these are likely also the measurements of the OnePlus Open. As a reminder, both devices will become official on October 19.

In the provided images, you can see that the Find N3 will feature flat sides. It will have a large camera oreo on the back, as it is rumored to include a rather powerful camera setup.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be included, with plenty of RAM

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will fuel this smartphone, while OPPO will include up to 16GB or 24GB of RAM. A 7.8-inch main display will be backed by a 6.3-inch cover panel. Both displays will be of the OLED variety, and offer a 120Hz refresh rate.

A 4,805mAh battery is also rumored, along with 100W wired charging. A 50-megapixel main camera is rumored, along with a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 64-megapixel telephoto unit.

Firefox is testing an AI checker to weed out fake reviews

Mozilla, the company behind the Firefox browser, is trialing a new built-in browser feature that analyzes product reviews for authenticity. The publication MSPowerUser was the first to report this experimental feature, titled ‘Review Checker.’ Mozilla officials have now gone on record to confirm the Firefox Review Checker.

How does the review checker works

The feature comes five months after Mozilla acquired Fakespot — a company that detects fake reviews using artificial intelligence. Their website, app and browser extensions use AI to adjust product ratings and filter fake reviews automatically. They assign letter grades to the reliability of reviews and automatically adjust the star rating with suspicious reviews filtered out. 

But that technology is now being built directly into the Firefox browser. A small number of users in the US are currently testing it, as confirmed by Byron Jourdan, a senior product management director at Mozilla. 

New Firefox Review Checker

It works on three major retail sites: Amazon, BestBuy, and Walmart. When you visit one of their pages, you’ll find a tiny icon for the Review Checker tool on the URL bar. It’s currently in beta, but once enabled, you’ll get a grade rating for the product reviews, some highlights and an adjusted 5-star rating. A or B ratings indicate reliable reviews, mixed C, and suspicious D or F. It’s a lightweight utility, so it shouldn’t bog down your browsing experience, but you can quickly turn it off if need be.

Fake reviews are a serious problem for shoppers & retailers

Users rely heavily on reviews when shopping online, making them a  prime target for scammers. For years,  Amazon and other retailers have been playing a game of whack-a-mole with fake reviews. But the situation has gone from bad to worse. Scammers are turning to AI to create hard-to-detect fake reviews at scale. Phrases like “as an AI language model…” are showing up more frequently in product reviews.

Firefox’s Review Checker aims to give online shoppers a tool to surface legitimate reviews using AI. In a way, it’s fighting fire with fire. Their sophisticated artificial intelligence sifts through millions of reviews. It then uses that training data to identify patterns and anomalies in bogus reviews.

Mozilla aims to reduce the global carbon footprint with its AI-powered review verification. Fake reviews often lead to product returns, which has a serious environmental impact. 

Mozilla has already funneled millions of dollars into this project. And the Review Checker shows Mozilla’s commitment to a transparent and trustworthy web. “We will continue to test and see if this is one of the ways where we can help improve people’s online experience,” Byron told the Verge.

uniform bezels, flat display & more

The Xiaomi 14 Pro design has just been revealed, kind of. 91mobiles published some CAD-based renders of the device, in partnership with @OnLeaks. The design got shown in both images and video (below the article). @OnLeaks is usually spot on when it comes to such leaks, so… chances are this is the final design of the device.

So, what will we get? Well, as you can see, the Xiaomi 14 Pro will feature flat sides. The edges will be rounded a bit, for more comfort. The phone will include a flat display, and seemingly uniform bezels.

All of its physical buttons will sit on the right-hand side, and a rather large camera module will be included on the back. It seems like we’ll be getting three or four cameras on the back, and one on the front. A display camera hole will still be included, and centered. The phone’s rear camera module will also protrude quite a bit.

The source also claims that the Xiaomi 14 Pro will measure 161.6 x 75.3 x 8.7mm. With the camera module, we get a thickness of 13.1mm. So, that camera module is quite thick, which suggests large sensors.

A 6.6-inch flat display will be included

What about the display? Well, a 6.6-inch flat panel with 2.5D glass will be included on the phone. That’s basically all the information that the source shared.

We can assume that the Xiaomi 14 Pro will be fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. It will actually be one of the first phones to include that chip, if not the first one.

Xiaomi is allegedly planning to announce the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro on October 27. Soon after Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, where the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be announced.

Do note that both of these phones will launch in China first, almost certainly. We’ll have to wait a bit longer for the global launch. Probably until next year. Also, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is likely coming too, but at a later date.

Android Auto still drives the future of IoT

With the end of Android Things, some thought that Google’s commitment to Internet of Things technology was dwindling. However, several IoT apps are now coming to Android Auto, which means that developers can field apps designed to connect to Android’s own navigation assistant and help with a wider array of activities.

We review Google’s decision and discuss Android’s suitability as the foundation of IoT beyond the steering wheel.

Android Auto Welcomes IoT Apps

First, the big news. Prior to this update, a select few apps were supported for Android Auto (and Automotive) such as YouTube Music, WhatsApp, and navigation apps. Now it’s not just those heavy hitters, as IoT apps have been given the green light.

It means that IoT apps can connect smart homes and other home automation tech to Android Auto, within reason. There are limits on functionalities that could distract driving, which is understandable. However, things like opening garage doors or turning lights on with your phone are fair game and will soon be possible when relevant apps have been developed.

Android Is the Most Compatible OS

It’s the latest example of what Android does best – create a service that gathers a user base, then open the door to third-party developers, who bring their own magic and enhance the brand. In this case, the introduction of IoT apps reminds many of Android Things and its cancellation over a year ago. While IoT never took off with Android Things, Google-supported systems like Nest have found their place and still use the Android platform. The future of IoT is with Android, solely due to its unrivaled compatibility.

IoT and home automation have become more popular in the intervening years. Android’s device compatibility makes them the obvious candidate for IoT networks. Many different developers and manufacturers create for the Android platform, so they can be linked through Android with very little effort. This is less common for other operating systems, where it is easier to run into proprietary setbacks.

Where there is proprietary support, sites like Google’s Gamesnacks service is available for passengers or if the car is stopped, adding games to every Android Auto vehicle. It provides users with a secure hub for many different kinds of gaming, specifically through HTML5. As Auto broadens the apps it allows onto the platform, it’s worth it for consumers to scope out a platform’s safety first. Tools exist for this in every niche and industry, contenders in the entertainment industry would be sites like CasinoReviews.com, which rates sites based on their safety and security features, for example. Likewise, similar websites cover the wide range of third-party apps that are available on the Android platform and may be made available for Auto in the future.

A smart office could become compromised due to an unprotected network connection to a smart light switch, for example. The open-sourced nature of Android means that it benefits from a wide audience of hobbyists and engineers who can view, modify, and enhance its code. This means that vulnerabilities are more visible and can be pointed out or rectified with relative ease. On the flip side, malware attacks are more common on the Android platform, maybe because its code is more visible.

Fortunately, malware is easily fended off if users visit trusted sites and services. There are entire websites built around rating services on their security, among other factors. Use these to avoid the spread of malware across connected devices, especially for services that leverage sensitive data in some way, such as financial information or identifying documents.

The Android Auto news comes as a welcome surprise, not least to those who use navigation apps. If these IoT apps are popular, it may show that smart home automation support has grown in popularity since the days of Android Things. In an increasingly digitized world, the demand for IoT features will only get louder.

Tests show that Google Tensor G3 has improved power efficiency

Google’s Pixel devices are generally not known for their raw power or the position in a benchmark score list. Google aims for smart features rather than focusing on topping the benchmark, which isn’t always necessary either. But also, Tensor chips have always lagged behind the power efficiency, which is important. And to measure the power efficiency improvements on the Tensor G3, some tests were necessary.

Golden Reviewer performed different tests and recorded the results alongside its competitors to figure out if the performance and power efficiency have been improved. The Google Tensor G3 houses one more CPU core than the convention (1x Cortex-X3 + 4x A715 + 4x A510) and an ARM Mali-G715 GPU.

Tensor G3 loses benchmarks

In 3DMark Wildlife Extreme GPU test, the Tensor G3 performed similarly to Apple’s three year old A14 chip. Not to mention it’s a bit disappointing. After all, the phone is a flagship and it should keep up with a demanding game or so if you want to play.

GSMArena compared the Tensor G3 to the Dimensity 9200 from the list (below) as it houses the same Mali-G715 GPU fabricated on TSMC’s nodes. In comparison, Google fabricates their chip in collaboration with Samsung and this is where Tensor chips have suffered at least previously. According to Golden Reviewer, Samsung Foundry’s 4LPP node is nearly two generations behind TSMC’s 4nm one.

Back to the tests, the Dimensity 9200 performed 1.5 times better than the Tensor G3. At least the Tensor G3 was able to achieve similar power efficiency. Moving over to GFXBench Aztec (Vulkan/Metal back end, 1440p offscreen), the Dimensity 9200 again yielded nearly double the score than the Tensor G2 with similar efficiency.

The improved efficiency will matter

The key point here is that Google has managed to match the efficiency of TSMC-fabricated silicon. Although, real-life scenarios may yield different results at times.

The results suggest that Pixel 8 series devices may not heat up as much as the Pixel 7 series did. This is excellent news for Pixel fans because overheating and related issues were the primary barriers preventing the Pixel from surpassing its status as ‘one of the best’.

Google just prevented the largest DDoS attack ever

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have long been an issue for tech companies, considering they are easy to manufacture. Now, according to a new report from Google, the company recently stopped the largest DDoS attack ever, with a peak of 398 million requests per second (rps), significantly surpassing last year’s record of 46 million rps.

“For a sense of scale, this two-minute attack generated more requests than the total number of article views reported by Wikipedia during the entire month of September 2023,” said Google.

How did the attack work?

For those who are unfamiliar with DDoS attacks, they involve threat actors overwhelming a server with internet traffic to prevent users from accessing connected online services and websites.

According to the report, the DDoS attack began in August, targeting major providers, including Google’s services and Google Cloud, as well as their clients, using a new technique known as “Rapid Reset.” This technique involves the use of multiple HTTP/2 connections, with requests and resets happening rapidly in succession. This overwhelms the targeted systems by generating logs for requests that are promptly reset or cancelled. However, it is important to note that the threat actors exploited the vulnerability CVE-2023-44487 in the protocol stack to carry out the attack.

While Google was the most affected, threat actors also targeted companies like CloudFlare, which defended against a 201 million RPS attack, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), which repelled a 155 million RPS assault.

Response to the attack

In response to the attacks, all three companies collaborated and shared information to develop patches and mitigation techniques. Additionally, Google has informed business providers to check for the vulnerability in their systems and urged them to promptly apply the relevant patch. Furthermore, recognizing that most companies lack the resources to fend off such attacks, there are calls to invest in robust network DDoS defence services.

“We were able to mitigate the attack at the edge of Google’s network, leveraging our significant investment in edge capacity to ensure our services and our customers’ services remained largely unaffected,” reads Google’s blog post.

Pixel 8 Pro uses Samsung’s E7 display; more Tensor G3 info

More Google Pixel 8 Pro info was just revealed, including the exact display the phone is using. This information comes from kamila aka @Za_Raczke, who dug around the Pixel 8 series’ source code. The very same source shared a ton of Pixel 8 info way ahead of launch.

In any case, the tipster wanted to clarify some things, and share more info about the phones and their hardware. First of all, we now know that the Pixel 8 Pro utilizes Samsung’s E7 display. This is an AMOLED LTPO display, of course.

In fact, this is likely the very first smartphone to utilize that display. Not much is known about it, but there you go. The latest and greatest, it seems. That display was actually praised by DXOMARK, and managed to climb to the very first spot on the company’s list.

The Tensor G3 initially had higher clock speeds

iPhone 15 & iPhone 15 Pro camera sensors pose side-by-side

It’s not exactly a secret that the iPhone 15 series and iPhone 15 Pro phones don’t have the same 48MP camera sensors. The Pro models come with a larger main camera sensor than the base and Plus model,. You might be saying to yourself that the 15 base and Plus models come with the same sensor as the 14 Pro series, while the 15 Pro series got a sensor upgrade.

Well if you feel this way, then you are very wrong because the sensors on the 15 Pro and 14 Pro series are the same size. The 15 base and Plus models come with a smaller 48MP sensor, meaning photo quality here won’t match the Pro series. As you might already know, the larger the sensor, the more light that gets in, hence improving image quality with better lighting.

The 48MP sensor on the iPhone 15 Pro model measure 1/1.28-inch and have 1.22µm-sized pixels. Moving over to the base and the Plus model, these have a 1/1.56-inch sensor with 1.0µm-sized pixels. This shows the sensor size comparison for both devices on paper, however, the folks at iFixit have something better to show you.

Under the microscope, it becomes clear that the size difference between the two camera sensors is massive. Thanks to its larger 48MP sensor, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be able to take better pictures. As for the iPhone 15, it will struggle to get photos that are as good as its biggest sibling.

An area where the size differences will impact photography is night photography. For taking great night pictures, the device’s sensor needs to take in much light, which will help brighten the shot. With its larger sensor, the 15 Pro Max will excel in this area, but the 15 will fall back since it has a smaller sensor.

This is not to say that the picture quality on the 15 base model and the 15 Plus are not good. Both devices take amazing pictures, but they can’t meet up with the Pro and the Pro Max in certain areas. It might take a very observant eye to notice the differences in the pictures taken on either device.

However, this wouldn’t stop anyone from getting whatever device in the iPhone 15 series they prefer. Can you delete yourself from the internet?

Technically speaking, it’s not possible to remove all traces of yourself and your online activity from the internet with 100% certainty. That’s because most people have been interacting with the net on a daily basis for many years and over this time, they have created an extensive digital footprint which it’s extremely challenging to eradicate.

Having said that, there are plenty of steps you can take to reduce your online exposure and limit the amount of personal information that is shared with others online. Given the nature of the beast, it’s all but impossible to remove yourself from the internet altogether. However, with an investment of time, effort and perhaps money, you can reduce your online presence quite substantially.

Google Drive is testing a two-page view for larger screens

While it’s been going on for some time, we still see Google bringing changes and optimizations to its products, and Google Drive is the next app to get some love. According to Android Police, Google Drive is testing out a two-page view for larger screens.

Google Drive is testing a two-page view for larger screens

One hard lesson that Android tablet users had to learn over the years was that smartphone apps don’t often work on tablet screens. This is why Google is working to make Android a better platform for larger screens. Because of this, fundamental Google apps like Docs, Gmail, and others have been getting some major changes in order to make using them on a tablet easier.

Now, Google Drive is getting a new useful change. One thing to note is that this is a leak at the end of the day. You’ll want to take this news with a grain of salt. We’re talking about a beta test that’s going on. Thus, there’s a chance that Google will not push this to the app. Just keep that in mind.

@AssembleDebug spotted this in the latest beta build of the Google Drive app. In this version of the app, Google Drive will open documents in a side-by-side view. As it stands, when you open a document like a PDF file, it will just stretch one page across the screen in landscape mode. This makes it a pain to read.

However, after the change, it will show you two pages on the screen as though you’re reading a book. You’ll be able to swipe through them like you would in the Kindle app or Google Play Books.
