YouTube Music officially launched support for audio and video podcasts earlier this year, slowly signaling the eventual death of Google’s native Podcasts app as it was poised to become its replacement. Today, Google confirmed this, announcing that Google Podcasts will be discontinued in 2024.
In a blog post, the YouTube team announced today that it will be increasing its investment in podcasts, making it a better destination for fans and podcasters. As part of this process, YouTube will discontinue Google Podcasts. This migration is scheduled to take place later in 2024 with no specific date given.

YouTube will also provide robust creation and analytics tools for podcasters. While this transition will take time, YouTube states that it will remain committed to building an amazing product and a single destination for podcasts.

This move will position YouTube Music closer as a competitor to other music streaming platforms – such as Spotify, which has Podcasts tightly integrated into their apps. This will recreate that experience instead of having users hop between apps to access their daily audio and visual content.
Additionally, YouTube Music’s integration of podcasts with its music library is another unique feature. This will make it easy for users to switch between listening to music and listening to podcasts, as well as switching between the audio and video formats of said media.

YouTube Music’s expansion into the podcasts space is a significant development for the podcast industry. Google Chrome use-after-free Vulnerability Leads to Remote Attack

Google Chrome has been recently discovered to be a Use-after-free vulnerability that threat actors can exploit to attack users. This vulnerability exists in the Google Chrome VideoEncoder, which can be triggered using a malicious web page.

However, Google Chrome version 113.0.5672.127 (64-bit) and Chromium 115.0.5779.0 (Build) (64-bit) were found to be vulnerable to this bug, which was fixed by Chrome developers in versions 114.0.5735.198 for Mac and Linux and 114.0.5735.198/199 for Windows.

CVE-2023-3421 – Google Chrome use-after-free

Use-after-free is a condition in which the memory allocation is freed, but the program does not clear the pointer to that memory. This is due to incorrect usage of dynamic memory allocation during an operation. 

CVE-2023-3421 vulnerability arises due to this use-after-free condition in the VideoEncoder av1_svc_check_reset_layer_rc_flag functionality, which a threat actor can exploit by serving a malicious HTML page which can lead to heap corruption.

Galaxy A35 could fix the lineup’s camera shortcomings

Samsung recently launched the first batch of its next-gen Galaxy A phones. The Galaxy A05 and Galaxy A05s debuted on Monday as the company’s new entry-level offerings. It will follow with new models in the Galaxy A1x, Galaxy A2x, Galaxy A3x, and Galaxy A5x lineups over the next few months. Leaks about these devices have now started coming in, with the first piece of information hinting at a major camera upgrade for the Galaxy A35.

According to GalaxyClub, Samsung will equip the Galaxy A35 with a 50MP primary rear camera. This may not seem much of an upgrade over the Galaxy A34’s 48MP shooter. However, the two cameras in question are different in many other ways than just the resolution or the number of pixels. The 48MP shooter is an older camera that the Korean firm has used on its mid-range phones for the past few years, along with a 64MP lens.

The 50MP camera, on the other hand, is a newer sensor with many underlying changes that allow for improved photo and video qualities. Earlier this year, Samsung upgraded the Galaxy A54 to this camera but stuck with the older solution for the Galaxy A34. Unsurprisingly, cameras proved to be one of the weakest points of the phone. It appears the Korean behemoth will fix this shortcoming of the Galaxy A3x lineup next year.

The Galaxy A35 may not upgrade the selfie camera

The same report states that the Galaxy A35 will still use a 13MP selfie camera, probably the same one found on its predecessor. Details about other cameras are not known. The current model features an 8MP ultrawide camera and a 5MP macro camera. Samsung uses these cameras on many other mid-range models, including devices in the Galaxy M and Galaxy F series. They aren’t anything special, but can get the job done.

The rear camera upgrade for the Galaxy A35 will substantially bridge the gap to the Galaxy A55. Note that these phones are still several months away. The 2023 models arrived in March, so their successors should arrive around the same time next year. Rumors are that Samsung will launch the Galaxy S24 flagships about two weeks earlier than the Galaxy S23. Even if the company applies this strategy to the Galaxy A series, the Galaxy A35 and Galaxy A55 likely won’t see the light of day before February 2024. We will get to know more about them closer to their launch.

Reddit turns gold into real money by introducing a new Contributor Program

Reddit is a social media platform where users can discuss and share content on various topics through communities called subreddits. As per the latest data, Reddit has more than 50 million daily active users and more than 1.6 billion monthly active users, making it one of the biggest and most popular social media platforms in the world. Reddit announced (via Engadget) that it is introducing a new Contributor Program, which will allow eligible redditors, including mods, to be rewarded with real money for their content and contributions on the platform. The money for the awarded content will be paid monthly, and the program begins rolling out today in the US for both web and mobile apps for iOS and Android.

 
If you’re logged into Reddit, you can access the program through your profile menu. Once you click on it, you’ll land on the program page. If you meet the criteria to join the Contributor Program, you’ll find a “Get Verified to Start Earning” button you can tap.

 
Reddit’s Contributor Program allows eligible users to earn real money by contributing, and your monthly payments are based on the karma and gold you receive. To qualify, you need to be at least 18 years old, reside in an eligible location (initially, only the US), have an account in good standing, and meet the karma requirements.


Reddit offers “standard contributor” status, earning 90 cents per gold awarded, to users with at least 10 gold and between 100 to 4,999 karma in the last 12 months. For “top contributors,” who earn $1 per gold awarded, the threshold is a minimum of 10 gold and over 5,000 karma from the past 12 months. Those who fall below these thresholds won’t be eligible for real-world payments until they meet these goals.


Reddit has also revamped its gold system for awarding content. Users can now long-press the upvote icon on mobile (or hover over it on desktop) to access six gold awarding options, starting at $1.99 for one gold and going up to $49.00 for 25 gold. When you award with gold, a golden upvote replaces the regular one, but you still earn karma with regular upvotes. This feature is initially available on Reddit’s mobile apps and selected communities, with a web rollout planned for later this year.

Millions Of Records Were Compromised In A MOVEit Data Breach

The Progress MOVEit software’s vulnerability resulted in a cybersecurity breach that affected BORN (the Better Outcomes Registry & Network), which gathers data on pregnancies, births, the postpartum period, and childhood.

Unauthorized copies of files containing sensitive personal health data were obtained from BORN’s systems during the breach.

About 3.4 million people’s personal health information, especially that of pregnant women and infants born in Ontario between January 2010 and May 2023, was contained in the files obtained.

The renowned Clop ransomware and extortion group, which has ties to Russia, claimed responsibility for the MOVEit large breaches, although it has not yet named BORN as one of its victims.

Insights of the Cybersecurity Breach

BORN Ontario reports said that the personal health information that was stolen was gathered from a vast network of largely Ontario-based healthcare facilities and other healthcare institutions and providers that provided services for fertility, pregnancy, newborn, and child health between January 2010 and May 2023.

According to Born, people that are impacted include:

  • Women giving birth or children born in Ontario between April 2010 and May 2023.
  • Pregnant women who get treatment in Ontario between January 2012 and May 2023.
  • Individuals who have IVF or egg banking procedures between January 2013 and May 2023 in Ontario. 

The organization acknowledged that cybercriminals had stolen Names, Addresses, postal codes, Date of birth, and, Health card numbers without a version code.

Further, the hack exposed the following medical data that includes dates of service/care, lab test results, pregnancy risk factors, type of birth, procedures, pregnancy and birth outcomes (e.g., live birth, stillbirth, complications, diagnoses) associated with episodes of care they have received.

The impacted data does not contain any banking or financial information, such as credit card details, social security numbers, the version of a health card, expiration or security codes, or patient email addresses.

“In total, files included the personal health information of approximately 3.4 million people: 1.4 million individuals seeking prenatal or pregnancy care and 1.9 million newborns and children”, said the report.

On May 31, 2023, BORN learned about the event and immediately informed the appropriate authorities, including the Ontario Provincial Police and the Information and Privacy Commissioner (IPC) of Ontario. BORN also placed a public notice about the occurrence on its website.

“We began working with cybersecurity experts immediately to isolate the affected computer server, contain the threat, investigate the full scope of the incident, and ensure our systems were safe to continue our operations”, BORN Ontario said.

There is no proof that any of the copied data was utilized fraudulently in any form. No indications of BORN’s data being posted or made available for sale have been discovered despite the organization’s continued monitoring of the internet, particularly the dark web, for any activity connected to this occurrence.

These specs come from Abhishek Yadav on Twitter. While Yadav is a trusted leaker, you’ll still want to take this information with a grain of salt. Based on the leak, it looks like this tablet is going to have a killer display. We’re looking at a sizable 11.6-inch display with an impressive 2.4K display, which is more pixel-dense than with most other tablets of this size.

It’s going to be an LCD display, but OnePlus’ LCD panels are some of the best on the market. The OnePlus Nord N30 and Nord N300 are proof of that. Making it better will the 120Hz refresh rate.

Moving onto the internals, this tablet could be using the MediaTek Helio G99. Its performance will rely on software optimization. We’re not sure how much RAM it will have, but we expect between 6GB and 8GB. We don’t have any word on the storage, we’re thinking that it will come with 128GB.

Moving onto the cameras, it looks like this phone will have an 8MP camera on the rear for taking pictures. Up front, we’re looking at another 8MP camera for video calls.

Finishing up the specs, we’re looking at an 8,000mAh battery, a USB-C 2.0 port, and Dolby Atmos audio. We’re not sure how much this tablet will cost, but we’re looking at a launch date of October 6th.

Previous reports have it that TSMC had intentions to kick off the production of the next node of chips by the year 2025. However, due to certain factors, this production process might face delay, pushing it a year forward from its original time frame.

This coming processor node is going to be groundbreaking for TSMC as it will introduce the usage of new technology (GAA) to the firm. Companies like Apple and Qualcomm will put this coming node to use on their coming processor line-ups. Well, these companies will have to wait for another year before they get their hands on the new 2nm node that TSMC has in the pipeline.

The reason behind this delay has something to do with setting up the necessary facility for the development of this node. TSMC seems to be facing some challenges in setting up this production facility and the development of the 2nm node will be affected by this. While TSMC worries about this delay, it also needs to worry about the competition that will be ahead of them with releasing the 2nm node for chip production.

While the TSMC 2nm production process struggles, the competition might join the fast lane

The challenges that are delaying the setting up of TSMC’s new foundry for the 2nm node production are causing problems for the company. This delay is already pushing back the start of the production process for the 2nm node for use in smartphones and gadgets. Another major concern this delay will bring is that the competition might be ahead of TSMC.

Samsung Foundry is one of TSMC’s biggest rivals in the chip production industry. Unlike TSMC, the Samsung Foundry isn’t facing any issue that might delay the production of their 2nm process. The Foundry will get its 2nm node ready by 2025 a year ahead of TSMC.

Intel, another major competition for TSMC, is also preparing to make its chips more powerful. They’ll get this done by adding backside power delivery to their chips. Reports have it that this backside power delivery also known as Power Via will be ready by next year.

Once available, this will boost the performance of coming Intel-designed chips. By 2025, Intel will kick off the development of its 18A or 1.8nm node, which will ship to manufacturers for usage in the industry. TSMC and Samsung Foundry might get Power Via technology into their 2nm chips by 2026 or later.

Just one delay in the production process of the TSMC 2nm node might put them behind the competition. Despite rolling out 3nm chips on smartphones first, TSMC might take the backseat for the 2nm process. In the coming months, more details on this and the development of other chip foundries will become available.
