Pixel Tablet: Everything you need to know

Google delivered the first tablet in the new Pixel family of devices, and we were all excited about it. Named the Pixel Tablet, this device integrates seamlessly with the other Pixel devices.

How does the docking feature work?

This is the Pixel Tablet’s headlining feature. The tablet has four connector pins on the back, and it will use them to connect to a stationary dock.

This dock serves two purposes. For starters, it will be a charger that will keep it topped off and powered on. As for the other feature, the dock will turn it into the equivalent of a Nest Hub display.

This will make the Pixel Tablet the best of both worlds between tablets and smart displays. You’ll be able to use it as a regular tablet for work and play and dock it if you need to use it as a Nest Hub.

What kind of specs does this tablet have

These specs are pretty on par for a tablet of this caliber. The Pixel Tablet has a large 10.95-inch display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600. That’s 160 pixels more than a 1440p display. Also, it’s an LCD display with a peak brightness of 500 nits.

As for the internals, this tablet uses Google’s in-house Tenser G2 chip to power the device. This is the same chip that’s powering the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. We’re looking at 8GB of RAM backed up by 128GB/256GB of storage.

As for the battery, we don’t have an official capacity. Google has been pretty sneaky about the capacity, but it did say that it will last the table 12 hours on a full charge.

However, one picture shows the device with 70% left in the tank. Next to that, we see that the system estimated 15 hours and 54 minutes of battery life remaining. Hopefully, that points to really good battery life.

There will be quad speakers for this device, which is pretty standard for modern tablets. Two speakers will sit on the left side and two on the right.

As for the camera tech, the Pixel Tablet has an 8MP camera on the front and an 8MP camera on the back. They’re not meant to be impressive, but we will see how they perform with Google’s amazing AI processing. You’re more likely to use the front camera if you’re going to be doing video calls.

One thing that differentiates this tablet from a smart display is the inclusion of the fingerprint scanner.

What materials is it made from?

The Pixel Tablet will definitely have a premium feel to it. Google announced that the chassis for the tablet will be made from 100% recycled aluminum. On top of that, the company coated it in a nano-ceramic finish.

Google coated the chassis with microscopic particles of ceramic to give it a unique feeling. The company said that it was inspired by the feeling of porcelain, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it to find out!

What software will it launch with?

The Pixel Tablet will launch with Android 13 out of the box. What’s fortunate about that is that it has the tablet optimizations that Google’s been working on since late 2021 with Android 12L.

The majority of Google’s first-party apps have been reworked to operate on larger screens. So, apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Keep, and others will look perfect on the tablet’s large display.

Also, the notification shade will be split into two columns to better accommodate a landscape screen. There will be an app dock on the bottom that will house apps for quick access as well.

Those are the main changes that Google brought, and there are plenty more in the software. Since this is both Google’s hardware and software, we can expect both to work great with one another.

How many variants will are there?

There is only one variant of the Pixel Tablet, and that one has two storage configurations. Everything else about the tablet is the same.

Does this tablet have stylus support?

Yes, the Pixel Tablet has stylus support. The device passed the USI (Universal Stylus Initiative) certification. This means that it’s compatible with USI styluses. These are advanced styluses that offer high precision and several levels of pressure.

How much does the Pixel Tablet cost?

The price for the Pixel Tablet was one of the biggest questions in the air. It’s meant to go up against the likes of the Galaxy Tabs and the iPads of the world. However, there’s good news on the price front. The Pixel Tablet costs $499. That price also includes the charging dock.

That’s a great deal for a tablet like this. It’s running a flagship processor, has a pixel-dense display, has the latest version of Android, and much more. Google priced the tablet pretty well.

FTC launches investigation against Twitter over lack of data privacy measures

Elon Musk’s X, formerly Twitter, has had a tumultuous year plagued with erratic changes and confusing features. Now, according to new court filings, the FTC has launched an investigation against Twitter due to concerns related to the company’s lax approach to privacy and security measures.

The investigation stems from a 2022 settlement where Twitter, led by Jack Dorsey at the time, faced a substantial $150 million fine while committing to specific privacy and security protocols. However, with Musk taking charge shortly after, these measures seemed to have fallen by the wayside, with the DOJ describing his management style as “chaotic.”

“Evidence the FTC uncovered during its investigation reveals that Musk has been deeply involved in the ‘fundamental transformation’ of X Corp. Several former employees testified about how Musk exercised granular control of X Corp., at times directing employees in a manner that may have jeopardized data privacy and security,” reads the court filing.

Rushing Twitter Blue

The FTC started the investigation in March, initially focusing on the hurried launch of Twitter Blue after Damien Kieran, Twitter’s former chief privacy officer, pointed out that the company bypassed its usual privacy and security reviews. Additionally, the department is also looking into Musk’s attempts to grant a journalist unmediated access to internal systems.

However, perhaps the most critical issue revolves around Musk’s reorganization of company servers between data centres. This is because Twitter’s policy mandates wiping all servers before relocation, but former employees claim that the company overlooked this crucial step. Furthermore, the FTC argues that Musk’s rapid layoffs have hindered their ability to investigate the matter as every employee they identified as a person of interest has either resigned or was terminated by the company.

Twitter’s response

Although Twitter hasn’t responded to these allegations directly, Elon Musk did previously characterized the investigation as the “weaponization of a government agency for political purposes.”

Ongoing Webex malvertising campaign drops BatLoader

Corporate users performing Google searches for the popular conferencing software Webex are being targeted in a malvertising campaign.

A new malvertising campaign is targeting corporate users who are downloading the popular web conferencing software Webex. Threat actors have bought an advert that impersonates Cisco’s brand and is displayed first when performing a Google search.

We are releasing this blog to warn users about this threat as the malicious ad has been online for almost one week. The malware being used in this campaign is BatLoader, a type of loader that is very good at evading detection.

Note that Webex has not been compromised, this is a malicious campaign where threat actors are impersonating well-known brands to distribute malware.

Ad campaign details

For the past several days, we saw the same malicious ad whenever we searched for Webex. The advert is shown to users before the organic result and yet looks even more genuine as it is displaying the brand’s logo:

In fact, the ad looks entirely legitimate as it not only uses the Webex logo but also shows the official website. Yet, clicking on the menu to the right of the ad shows more details and reveals the advertiser as an individual from Mexico, quite unlikely to be related to Cisco:

To understand how this is happening, we can look at the Google Ads policy for display URLs. In particular, Google states that:

Your ads’ URLs should give customers a clear idea of what page they’ll arrive at when they click an ad. For this reason, Google’s policy is that both display and landing page URLs should be within the same website. This means that the display URL in your ad needs to match the domain that visitors land on when they click on your ad.

This malicious ad actually complies with this rule in the strict sense of the term as its landing page URL, also known as final URL, is on the same domain.

The threat actor is exploiting a loophole known as the tracking template. Google describes the tracking template as a place where you put URL tracking information. This is particularly helpful for advertisers as it gives them a number of metrics. However, it can also be abused in a way where the tracking template URL is used as a filtering and redirection mechanism.

For example, the threat actor has created a Firebase URL (trixwe.page.link) as their tracking template

The tracking URL can perform a number of checks on the visitor and determine if they are a potential victim. Here’s what happens if the ad was clicked via a sandbox:

We can see the tracking page redirects to a custom attacker-controlled website at monoo3at[.]com. This step allows the threat actor to fingerprint the visitor and then determine which action to take. In this case, the visitor was detected as a sandbox and therefore is being redirected to Webex’s official website. This technique is important because it allows the malicious advertiser to keep their ad up and running for a long time.

However, when the ad is clicked by a real victim, the web traffic looks very different:

Instead, the user is redirected to a malicious website (webexadvertisingoffer[.]com) purporting to be Webex:

BatLoader: the stealthy malware loader

The downloaded file exceeds the size limit for many sandboxes and is designed to bypass detection from antivirus products. While VirusTotal is not meant to be a replacement for a security product, it typically provides useful information and is often used by people to check if a file is clean.

In this case, there were 0 detection for this MSI file, in part because the format was unsupported by several security products:

But there is more to it and the way the file is packaged is making detection much more difficult. If we extract the installer’s contents we see many different folders and hundreds of files and libraries:

This is where a different type of security product, such as an EDR can actually show what is going on. The MSI installer contains anti-sandbox features and will only execute in certain environments. Using Malwarebytes’ Nebula, our cloud-hosted security platform for businesses, we can see the MSI spawns a number of processes including PowerShell and installs Python from a local resource.

This is BatLoader and based on the environment it detects, it will retrieve a custom secondary payload.

That payload is downloaded from BatLoader’s command and control server in encrypted format:

It is then then decrypted on disk using openssl, which we can see within our EDR environment:

That dropped malware is DanaBot, which was already detected without signature via our EDR’s heuristic engine:

Malvertising continues to provide initial access to threat actors

As we saw in this blog post, malvertising is a threat that continues to target corporate users, in particular by taking advantage of search engines such as Google that are commonly used to search for and download software.

Because the ads look so legitimate, there is little doubt people will click on them and visit unsafe sites. The type of software being used in those ads indicate that threat actors are interested in corporate victims that will provide them with credentials useful for further network “pentesting” and, in some cases, ransomware deployment.

Loaders such as BatLoader are stealthy and may not be detected by traditional antivirus. A more complete solution such as EDR coupled with an MDR service where human analysts review suspicious activities performed by the malware is a necessity.

We reported the malvertising incident to Google several days ago and will keep monitoring the ad landscape for any changes from these threat actors.

“Shoot, where did I leave my phone?” We’ve all asked this question plenty of times before. Well, when you can’t find your device, Google has a robust tool to help you locate it called the Find My Device app. According to 9To5Google, the Find My Device app is getting an update that brings a new logo.

The Find My Device app is a great tool to use if you find yourself searching for your phone. The app identifies devices that are signed in with your Google account. When you open the app, you’ll see your list of devices that you can track down. Once you tap on the device, you’ll see a map pop up showing the device’s location on a map.

If the device isn’t currently connected to the internet, it will show its last recorded location. Under the map, you’ll see additional options. One will play a sound on that device to help you locate it. Another device will secure your device. This will lock the device with its password or PIN. Also, you’ll be logged out of your account on the device.

The Find Me Device app is getting a new logo

Those of us who use this app are used to the green pin icon for the app. It’s a fitting logo, but Google has been planning on changing it for a bit. Back in June, the company showed off the new logo that it wanted for the app.

Instead of being a pin logo, the new logo will show the classic Google colors. This will give it the aesthetic of most Google apps nowadays. Instead of the pin, the icon will be more circular. we see a blue and green ring with red and yellow extensions radiating outward. This makes the logo look more like a radar. That makes sense, as you’re locating your devices.

Another rumor said that the cables would be braided, and they are. They’re all white-colored, unfortunately, but at least they’re braided, which should help with the durability, and should also make them tangle up far less.

As many of you know, those are not the only changes when it comes to this year’s cables. Apple also switched the charging port on the iPhone 15 series. It’s now a Type-C port, finally, so the included cable is also Type-C.

That actually goes for both of its sides. Apple ships a Type-C to Type-C cable in the box, but you won’t find a charger in there. You’ll need to get one separately, if you don’t already own one. This goes for all four models that were announced.

Four iPhone 15 models got announced yesterday

As a reminder, Apple hosted a press event yesterday, during which it announced the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 models got a camera bump from 12MP to 48MP, along with improved hardware, and more.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, on the flip side, got a titanium shell, thinner bezels, and improved camera hardware. The ‘Pro Max’ even has a periscope camera on the back, unlike the iPhone 15 Pro.

All four iPhone 15 models now come with a Dynamic Island too, that feature is no longer reserved for the ‘Pro’ models. The notch basically became a thing of the past. The iPhone 15 series will become available to pre-order on Friday, September 15.

Patch now! September Microsoft Patch Tuesday includes two actively exploited zero-days

Microsoft’s September 2023 Patch Tuesday is another important one. It patches two vulnerabilities which are known to be actively exploited.

Microsoft’s September 2023 Patch Tuesday is another important one. Not because it’s a busy one, but because we have some special cases. Patch Tuesday includes security updates for 59 bugs, two of which are known to be actively exploited.

The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added these two vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, based on evidence of active exploitation. This means that Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies need to remediate this vulnerability by October 3, 2023 in order to protect their environments against active threats.

Let’s start by looking at those two vulnerabilities.

CVE-2023-36761 (CVSS score 6.2 out of 10): a Microsoft Word information disclosure vulnerability. Exploiting this vulnerability could allow the disclosure of NTLM hashes and the Preview Pane is an attack vector. These NTLM hashes can be used in NTLM Relay attacks (pass-the hash) to gain access to the account. This means a successful exploitation would allow the attacker to impersonate the user and gain their access rights.

CVE-2023-36802 (CVSS score 7.8 out of 10): a Microsoft Streaming Service Proxy Elevation of Privilege (EoP) vulnerability. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain SYSTEM privileges.

Administrators of Exchange servers again have their work cut out for them. Five important vulnerabilities have been patched, three of which could result in Remote Code Execution (RCE). Visual Studio users have to deal with three critical RCE vulnerabilities and two rated as important.

A critical vulnerability which can be expected to have some impact is:

CVE-2023-29332 (CVSS score 7.5 out of 10): a Microsoft Azure Kubernetes Service Elevation of Privilege (EoP) vulnerability. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain Cluster Administrator privileges. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable and the attack complexity is low because an attacker does not require significant prior knowledge of the cluster/system so can achieve repeatable success when attempting to exploit this vulnerability.

Other vendors

Other vendors have synchronized their periodic updates with Microsoft. Here are few major ones that you may find in your environment.

Adobe has released security updates for Connect, Experience Manager, Acrobat and Reader.

Android’s September updates were released by Google.

Apple has released security updates for iOS and macOS.

Google has patched a critical vulnerability in Chrome that is being exploited in the wild.

SAP has released its September 2023 Patch Day updates.

We take a look at a cryptocurrency scam riding on the coat tails of the Apple Wonderlust event.

Yesterday, Apple launched its latest iPhone and Watch models at its massive Wonderlust event. As with many high profile launches like this, it attracted not just a mountain of press, but a whole load of scammers too.

One site uses the Apple brand to host a cryptocurrency scam. The hook is a supposed giveaway of “50,000 ETH and 5,000 BTC”, which is $79,885,500 and $130,325,000 respectively. Sadly the site, registered just yesterday, is not giving away this kind of digital cash.

The front page claims:

We believe that Blockchain and BTC coin will make the world more fair. To speed up the process of cryptocurrency mass adoption, we decided to run a 5,000 BTC giveaway.

As to how the scammers claw their ill-gotten gains from the victims, it’s a case of double your money. To get your foot on the ladder, all participants are required to chip in a little cryptocurrency of their own so there’s a large pool of funds for the lucky winner.

The site continues:

To participate you just need to send from 0.1 BTC to 50 BTC to the contribution address and we will immediately send you back 0.2 BTC to 100 BTC (x2) to the address you sent it from.

Fake donate links

To give you an idea of the supposed investment in the prize fund, 0.1 BTC is $2,606. 50 BTC is an eye watering $1,305,600. Meanwhile over in ETH land, a donation of 1 ETH would set you back $1,599. The maximum donation amount of 500 ETH is worth $79,9975.

This is an incredibly fast path to losing all of your money. An ETH and BTC address are provided for both fake donation options, and anyone sending funds to these addresses will likely not be seeing their money again.

Scrolling down the page shows a very long list of supposed transactions, as a way of encouraging people to hop on the bandwagon. However, sites which track address transactions and other activity display zero funds going in or out of those addresses.

With the event now over, the chances of this particular site hitting a payday will become increasingly remote. The people behind these kinds of sites are hoping that visitors won’t look too closely lest they spot the scam coming apart at the seams.

Even so, this is a common tactic and a popular way for scammers to encourage panic sending with the promise of huge payouts just out of reach. If any site asks you to “donate” cryptocurrency funds claiming you’ll double your money, you can safely ignore and move on.

This fake donation technique was doing the rounds last year, typically bolted on to Elon Musk scams. Here’s one from last April which used a “guess the planet” competition as bait. That same month, another scam made use of fake Medium blogs to achieve the same end result.

The value of your digital currency may rise or fall, but none of it matters if you’ve handed the lot to a scammer. If ever something had “If it’s too good to be true…” attached, this is most definitely somewhere up at the top.

Apple officially announced the Watch Series 9 on September 12 2023. It’s the company’s latest smartwatch and it comes with nifty advancements, many of which are powered by the use of the new S9 chip that’s inside of it. It’s also the same great Apple Watch you know and love in many ways. It has some improvements yes. But it still offers all the features that made the Watch Series 8 and its predecessors good watches. In this article, we’ll go over everything you need to know about the Watch Series 9. Ultimately trying to help you decide if you should spend your hard-earned money on it for the upgrade.

Apple Watch Series 9 Specs

To kick things off let’s talk about what the Watch Series 9 has going on for specs. For starters, the watch comes in two different sizes. You can get the Apple Watch Series 9 in either 41mm or 45mm sizes. We’re partial to the larger cases for smartwatches, but both will be nice. You can also get the watch case in either aluminum (which is less expensive) or stainless steel.

Both the aluminum and stainless steel also comes in multiple finishes. The Watch Series 9 features an always-on retina display with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits and a size of 1.9-inches, with sapphire crystal glass for protection. The watch is IP6X certified, and it’s dust tight and capable of water immersion up to 50 meters.

Additionally, it’ll run on WatchOS 10 with the new S9 chip inside. It supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for connectivity, but it also supports Bluetooth 5.3, and you can even get the watch in an LTE version if you like. It also has 64GB of internal storage. For battery life, the watch can last for up to 18 hours, or up to 36 hours in low power mode.

How much will the Watch Series 9 cost?

There are multiple price points available. So the price tag will depend on what version you choose. The starting cost of the Watch Series 9 is $399. This will get you the aluminum model in the 41mm size. If you want aluminum in the 45mm, the price jumps up to $429. Then the price goes up to $529 if you want the 45mm with cellular connectivity. Or $499 if you opt for the 41mm size.

Meanwhile the stainless steel model will start at $699 for the 41mm size and go up to $749 for the 45mm. Both sizes of the stainless steel watch come with cellular. Now keep in mind these are the full retail prices. It will also be possible to decrease the price of the watch by trading in an older watch. You’ll get more if you’re trading in an Apple Watch Series 8. But according to Apple you can get a minimum trade-in value of $60, and it can go up to $380. So there is a chance you could end up paying only $20 for the new watch if you got the 41mm aluminum model.

On top of these choices, it’ll also be possible to finance the watch over a period of 12 months. Which will break up the cost into payments of $33.25 (starting) for the aluminum model and $58.25(starting) for the stainless steel model. What features will the Watch Series 9 have?

There’s quite a few new features being added to the watch, and many if not all of them are made possible by the new Series 9 chip inside of it. This is because it uses faster neural engines. Some of the new features include on-device Siri requests, precision finding with the new second-generation ultra wideband chip, new HomePod integrations and more. For the HomePod integrations, the Watch Series 9 will launch the Now Playing screen when you come within 4 meters of the HomePod if audio is already playing.

And if it’s not playing it’ll bring up media suggestions in the Smart Stack so you can choose something to play. There’s also a new Smart Stack to display relevant widgets. New watch faces are being added too and include options like Snoopy, Palette, and Solar Analog. There’s also a new Nike watch face called Nike Globe

The coolest new feature though, is the double tap gesture. With Watch Series 9 you will be able to do a handful of different things just by tapping your index finger and thumb together twice. This includes answering and ending calls, snapping a photo, snoozing alarms, pausing and resuming media, launching the Smart Stack, and scrolling through the Smart Stack.

Returning features

Outside of new features, Watch Series 9 will still have familiar features from its predecessor. Including an ECG app, a blood oxygen app, high and low heart rate alerts, and alerts for irregular heart rhythm and low cardio fitness. It can also sense temperature and track your cycles, and emergency SOS, fall detection, and international emergency calling make a return as well. Naturally, you’ll have access to hundreds of apps and the watch will be able to track sleep and a ton of different exercises and activities.

Will you be able to use Watch Series 8 bands on the new watch?

In short, yes. You can use your old bands from the Watch Series 8 on the Watch Series 9. Apple kept the same 41mm and 45mm sizes for the new watch, and it uses the same connecting mechanism. So all you have to do is transfer the bands over and latch them in.

That being said, there are going to be plenty of awesome new bands to check out. Like Apple’s new FineWoven magnetic link band that “feels and looks like soft suede.” Additionally, your bands from the Watch Series 7 should work too as the case for that model is also the same size.

What colors does the watch come in?

This will depend on which version of the watch you get. The Watch Series 9 will come in five colors for the aluminum model. This includes Pink, Starlight, Midnight, Silver, and (PRODUCT) RED. For the stainless steel, you have a choice of three different colors. This includes Gold, Graphite, and Silver.

Of course, you can augment the color with the bands. And there are so many different options there that you can personalize it to your heart’s content.

What new bands will be available for the Apple Watch Series 9?

There’s a handful of new bands coming and these will be available directly from Apple as well as other retailers. Though some will be exclusive to Apple. Options like the FineWoven Magnetic Link band, the Modern Buckle band, and new colors of the Sport band, Sport Loop, Ocean band, Alpine Loop, Trail Loop, Braded Solo loop and more will all be available.
